  1. Hi mariePhy, First off, congrats! I think the department just says you won't know your exact final funding package until later because there are some large entrance scholarships that may only be able to awarded after you have accepted your offer (these would be added to your base funding). Your base funding package info should be available before you accept your offer. I would echo flybottle's comment about bargining. If you are in a position to negotiate and funding is a big concern, then I would politely email the DGS explaining the situation. Worst case, they say no - it won't change your acceptance. Best case, they are able to make the offer more attractive. If you come for the visitation days, you can perhaps also discuss it with the DGS then. You will also be able to chat with other international PhDs to see how they do with funding (I'm a domestic PhD with external funding, so I'm not much help). In the summers, there are typically some RAs available that can supplement your income. International students are also eligible for external funding in the form of OGS and Vanier scholarships, although the competition is tough. It is worth mentioning that the cost of living in London is pretty reasonable. The Philosophy Graduate Students' Association has created this website for new students to help them with budgeting and planning a move to London: http://westernpgsa.ca/new-students/ Hope that helps!
  2. Hi indeedwine, Sorry I can't be more help, but the Theory and Criticism department is seperate from the Philosophy department. The Philosophy department admits international students, so I would assume the Theory and Crit department does too, but I'm not sure.
  3. Hi All, This forum was super helpful to me when I was applying, so I thought I'd pay it forward. I'm a PhD student in the philosophy department at Western Ontario. If any admits have questions about visitation, the program, etc, feel free to ask me here or PM me. I'm also a resident in the Rotman Institute if anyone has questions about that!
  4. Just found out from my school of graduate studies that I was awarded a doctoral CGS!
  5. I feel like it would help my sanity to keep track of what schools have notified people - it seems like UVic, Waterloo, Queen's, anywhere else? (As far as I know, my school of graduate studies hasn't notified people yet, but I'm still freaking out, as I sure everyone else is.)
  6. Yeah, I think I may have been confused. It could be the case that I recieved an email not from SSHRC, but rather from my grad department notifying me.
  7. Just to clarify, do we think SSHRC will send no form of email notification, only mail? Or will the letter simply come sooner? I remember recieving an email from SSHRC for my MA scholarship a couple years ago (before the MA system changed) in addition to the letter. I'm just worried - the city I live in has a notoriously slow/generally bad mail system. EDIT - Nevermind, I looked around the website, and it says: "SSHRC will announce the competition results in spring 2014. Competition results are not provided by telephone or email."
  8. As a public service to female philosophy students, you might want to let us know what school you end up attending. I know that personally, I would be unhappy if I had to do my PhD in a cohort with unsupportive (verging on hostile) collegues who were dismissive of climate issues. (Not that the attitudes of members of your cohort are wholly decisive factors, but they could certainly be considerations.)
  9. Thanks for letting us know, and congrats! I wonder if this has been the admissions process in the past (a few early admits, then more later), but those admitted early simply didn't use GC? Or the admissions committee could just be doing things differently this year. Admissions processes are certainly mysterious.
  10. Does anyone find it odd that we haven't heard anything more from Michigan? Of course, not everyone accepted (or perhaps even waitlisted) uses gradcafe, but historically there have been more than 2 posts, and the waitlists and acceptances have come fairly close together. I wonder if their admissions are just being handled differently this season, or if the posts made on the GC about Michigan are/were accurate?
  11. I wonder when we will hear more from Michigan - only two posts so far, right?
  12. The extension is posted here: http://uwo.ca/philosophy/graduate/ Now it says the deadline is Jan 14 at midnight. I think our dept might have been having some technical problems with the online application system.
  13. I'm a grad student at UWO in philosophy, and our grad chair posted this on our grad program facebook page earlier today: "I'm very pleased to announce that the deadline for applications for Western's graduate program for Fall 2014 has been extended until Jan. 13th. Best of luck everyone." Hope that helps!
  14. More hope for those on alternates lists - I was just offered a Bombardier Master's Scholarship. It was a very pleasant surprise as I had assumed that all the awards would have been given out by this time. Does anybody know how getting the CGS Master's typically impacts your departmental Master's funding? Does it simply vary school to school?
  15. Hey, thanks again for all your help! After a lot of going back and forth, I ended up accepting Western!
