  1. They seem to have considered all the loopholes. If you read the award holders guide, they have all these instructions on when you can avail of the award. You have to be a registered student- the payments are half-yearly and you have to get a confirmation of registration for every semester. You cannot be working full-time, etc etc.
  2. No, it was because I am already in the PhD program (2nd year) and I figured it will be helpful to get the money early.
  3. I got an auto reply saying they will respond in 4 business days. So I have not got a confirmed confirmation either. But it is not yet 4 business days. I also sent them by email Form 1 for first payment (as I had asked for a May start date and I am not in a Canadian school so I have to send the form myself).
  4. Yeah, I have heard very confusing news too. I am having the check sent to my Canadian address and just depositing in the money in my Canadian account to avoid confusion. So I will file it as Canadian income (which will be excluded)
  5. Got the letter! In California no less! Whew- all the endless reviews and drafts of my research proposal seemed to have been rewarded. Congrats to everybody and much thanks to everybody on the forum for the virtual support and camaraderie (even though I was mainly an occasional lurker- I enjoyed everybody's posts). Good luck next time for those who couldn't make the cut this time. It IS a crap-shoot.
  6. Alright. Got my Trudeau reject today. End of that story. I had too much bourbon and chocolate the last two days waiting for closure and now I get to nurse my hangover and blues. Good luck everybody.
  7. oh, the game is still on? Thanks for this, Foreign Guy! I had lost all hope. I have been thinking that my reject letter was lost in the mail and I was not looking forward to contacting them next week to look at it on my screen. They have not sent out any acceptances yet? Seems really weird that they expect folks to prepare for an interview and book tickets within a week. I am still not too hopeful, but do keep us posted.
  8. Oh Carthage32, I am so sorry to hear that. I am still waiting and I hate every moment (makes me wonder why I applied for such a long shot). Can I ask how did they correspond with you? Was it by email or letter or did they send it directly to the university? I just want to get it done with.
  9. It is to do with the US J-1 visa. If you get any governmental grants on a J-1 visa, you have to go back to your home country for two years. Tricky part in the OP's situation is that (s)he is already fully funded. So it is very difficult to say if SSHRC will trigger the two-year rule (my hunch is that it will not- it is not like a Fulbright! But US visa processes can be very confounding and arbitrary). But you can still get waivers. Here is a good post detailing the process for a waiver and if you need one (it depends on what it says on your visa). Hopefully, someone who has got a SSHRC on a J-1 visa will have something more useful to say than my post http://usainternship.com/how-to-waive-your-2-year-home-residency-requirement/
  10. I think you are right that SSHRC will put you under the purview of the two-year rule. But you can get a no-objection waiver from the Canadian embassy if you have to change your status to H or anything else. The two-year J1 rule is very tricky- you can get dinged even if you get an NSF grant or work in a NSF grant project. I would check with the Canadian embassy to see how easy it is to get the waiver, especially if it just for SSHRC.
  11. Thanks Carthage32. I am not holding my breath but I just want to be done with the waiting game. SSHRC is bad enough!
  12. Direct applicant forwarded to next round here. Also, does anyone know about Trudeau scholarship? When do you find out if you did not make it to the next interview stage?
  13. Thanks, L119. Very generous of you to offer to putter around. Good luck to you too!
  14. Congratulations, L119! I've applied to Berkeley's JSP program as well and have not heard anything. So I guess that must be a reject. Good for you! Your profile must be very impressive. Were you the person who posted acceptance into the program more than a week back?
  15. Scores are online! Unexpectedly did well in AWA (5.5), whew!
