Apply for Research Assistant position with possible lack of academic reference?

07 March 2012 - 05:53 AM

I am applying for a research position at the university that I am attending for my masters. They require two academic letters of reference for this job. One of my former professors, who also wrote me a LOR for my grad school apps, agreed to tweak his existing LOR and mail it. The second professor I asked, who has wrote me an LOR before, has yet to respond to me about writing another LOR. While it has only been a day since I have emailed her, I feel worried because she has not been replying to my updates regarding graduate school. She has been very reliable otherwise. Am I needlessly worrying? At what point do I call her office and speak with her directly? I absolutely despise talking on the phone, which is why I prefer emails. I also sent her a thank you gift last week for all that she has done for me so far, so I doubt she has ill will towards me.

Also, I will need this LOR sent out next month. I realize it's short notice, but I only found out about it a few days ago.

I will be out of the country for a long weekend, so should I call her before I leave (which would be tomorrow) or wait until I get back (Monday)?

I would really appreciate your thoughts. I know I tend to be a worrier.

Accredited online sociology program for prereqs?

04 March 2012 - 02:31 AM

Hey folks, I was wondering if you could help me out here?  Since I did not major in sociology during my undergrad, I'm obviously missing some classes from my repertoire.  The university I plan to attend in the fall have asked me to take sociological theory before classes start in September.  There are so many online programs that it's overwhelming to try to weed through which programs are legitimate and which ones are not, especially since I have never taken an online course before.  I was wondering if any of you could recommend any online sociology programs?  I only need to take sociological theory.  Any help would be appreciated!

CUNY, M.A.

23 February 2012 - 07:14 PM

I just need to vent.  CUNY emailed me to say that they have yet to receive my transcript.  There are a few things wrong with this situation:
  • I had my undergrad university mail them my transcript months ago, but they didn’t it receive it so—
  • I mailed them a physical copy of my transcript along with the application fee in check form.
  • They received the application fee, but they apparently didn’t receive my transcript.
  • I let someone on the adcomm know that the transcript was going to be with the application fee in JANUARY when I mailed it.
I want my application fee back, and I want to rescind my application.  I did not pay $145 ($125 app fee + 2 transcripts) for them to be idiots.  I just feel like they’re swindling me out of my money at this point.
What do you suggest I do?  I'm so angry.

Is it weird when a professor tells you that you've been accepted to their universit...

I'd really like some opinions.  This is probably a stupid question.  :/

Masters Abroad, PhD in USA?

10 February 2012 - 09:45 PM

Did any of you get your master's overseas and continued to pursue a PhD in the United States? I am thinking of going that route, and I was wondering what your experiences were and if there was any advice you could give me? Anything would help. :)
