  1. Usually if you don't hear from a department (as in no interview, no email) by the end of February, it's most likely a rejection. I got rejected from Yale two years ago—didn't hear anything until March 15th or so. Of course, there are always exceptions.
  2. Don't feel pessimistic about Princeton, I don't think anything has been sent out yet!
  3. Just to answer your question about Yale—they tend to conduct Skype interviews.
  4. Hi everyone. I'm currently a PhD student in the French department at Princeton U. If you have any questions don't hesitate to PM me. I'm happy to answer any and all questions!
  5. There may be, I'm not sure. When I was looking into it (2010) it didn't appear to be available. But check it out! My professor opted to do the Middlebury MA program and was then accepted into Yale's PhD program. So, it's definitely an excellent program.
  6. I've heard it's an excellent program. But you have to pay, and this doesn't strike me as a good option if you are looking to continue on to a PhD program, as PhD programs (including masters) in the USA are typically funded (and sometimes quite generously). I don't know if this is a consideration or not.
  7. I'm a first year in a PhD program at Princeton (humanities) & my GRE scores were okay. Writing: 5.0 Verbal: 163 Math: 150 I hope those numbers are correct, I didn't check but that's what I remember. Anyways, apparently the GRE scores were pretty irrelevant here, and thank god for that because it was the worst part of my application. I hear that at Harvard and Yale they are sticklers about GRE scores. Don't know if that's true, and I know every department is different. For History, I don't see how your math score would matter at all. But can you take it again to improve your verbal score? I took the test twice last year. Once in August, and I got my scores back pretty late (mid-November) because they were testing the new GRE exam. Well, the scores I got back on the first round were really bad (writing: 2.5!), so I took it again at the last minute (end of November) and managed to do well enough.
  8. Quick question: do you think will we be paid September 1st? Do you know if it's monthly or bi weekly? I'm just wondering how September is going to work.
  9. Lostz, yes. At first that is what I was told -- but after some arguing, they managed to switch me. Although I haven't received the final confirmation -- so fingers crossed it actually goes through.
  10. I got the walk through double in the old graduate college. I was pretty unhappy with this, considering I've had my own apartment for the past 2 years -- I called, and was switched to one of the annexes. I am thrilled! I'm also happy that the meal plan isn't required, as I think the cost is way too high (95 meals/semester @ 16$ a meal? Craziness). I'm very excited to move down and hopefully have great housemates!
  11. I will be attending in the fall, PhD in French! Did you all opt for graduate housing? And if so, which option(s)?

I will be attending Princeton in the fall, I was just admitted into a phd program there. I would really like to live in the annexes (one room, big house)... how likely is it, as a first year student, that I would be placed there? I know that it used to be mandatory for first year students to live in the graduate college, but I also know that that has changed recently. Does anyone have any thoughts?
  13. What hogs of war says is very true. The 500 a month is unusual. However, like I said, if you PM for the landlord name (who owns several buildings in the area, more than 7 I believe), you can find a 2 bedroom where you won't have to pay more than 700/month (max.) and studios which average between 600-800 per month (not bad for its proximity to the center of town).
  14. For everyone who posted questions regarding the Amherst area... I'm currently completing my masters at UMASS, and there are pros and cons to the area (to be expected...) Car... I survived here without a car for year. It's completely do able and really no problem. There are buses that run all the time (and typically on time) and if you live near the center of town, you are all set. If anyone is looking for an apartment PM me, I know of a great landlord who has many inexpensive places right in the center of town (seriously, I pay 500 month including all utilities and live basically across the st. from Starbucks and five minute walk to campus). Food is good, bars are overrun with UMASS students (this means... a lot of bros.) I actually have had some really great times at the bars in Amherst, but they aren't for everyone. Bars in Noho (Northampton) are fun (slightly older crowd) and you can always take the bus back and forth. You can have a great social life in Amherst, you just have to go out and seek it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me!!
  15. Hi everyone! I have finally decided where I will be heading to school next year. However, I have to let two schools know that I will be declining their offer. What is the best way to go about doing so? Should I email the people I was in touch with? Any advice would be helpful. With one school I went down and visited, spoke to many faculty members, and they seem eager for me to attend. The other school I have not yet visited, but spoke on the phone with one faculty member. Thank you!
