  1. Thanks for the comments so far. Considering the ranking, I didn't find an information about how the score is calculated. I am working in an applied field. Do you mean the cities are different in terms of job opportunity or general living?
  2. Hi all, I have two offers for my CS PhD studies and would like to have your suggestions. :-) I'm an international student and I wonder what program might be better. Is there an obvious choice between the programs at Harvard and USC? My POI at USC seems to advice a much larger number of students than the one at Harvard. This could be good or bad. Also generally the name Harvard is better, but considering the name of the University in CS, I guess USC is much better. Considering funding, the offers are equal and I guess locations are both not bad. Any advice? All comments are welcomed! Thanks!
  3. - What are the pros and cons for a smaller research group? ~1-4 PhD students - What are the pros and cons for a larger research group? >4 PhD students I understand this is a sort of personal preference. But what would be criteria to evaluate where I would be a better fit in advance of actually joining a group?
  4. Thanks for your comment. Sorry I'm not a native as you might have noticed. I didn't mean personal as in "friendship" or similar, I meant we had a lot of discussions, meetings and worked on an intense project together. I'm not a friend with this recommender in my private time.^^
  5. Is a letter from an unknown researcher that is personal even looked at by the PhD-adcom? In other words, what recommender do you think is better: A) Letter from an unknown researcher (PhD, "principal research scientist" at a research institute) who I have a very personal relationship with and have been working closely over the past two years by doing research with him. B ) Letter from established researcher (professor at my undergraduate university, known in his specific field but peripherally related to my specific research interests.), Have taken classes from him but not done any research with him. So this would be a "did well in class"-letter I guess... Thanks for quick replies, I'll have to decide quickly Good luck with your applications!
  6. I studied EE as an undergraduate student and took courses from a variety of subfields of EE, and I am more interested in CS research. I also already worked in CS labs during my undergrad. Considering that I didn't take many CS courses, would it be better to apply for an EE PhD and then work for a CS advisor or should I directly apply for a CS PhD, where I might have lower admission chances due to my lack of coursework in the field?
  7. Well lets assume I did my homework - e.g. reading papers in the specific field of my POI. Then I am still wondering how my slightly different past experience (except non-substantial paper reading out of private interests) could be matched in the application with my POI? I should probably add that my lack of experience in that specific area is that my current university simply doesn't have such a lab. I guess there were previous applicants in similar situations who got accepted - how did you do it?
  8. Some of the labs I am interested in conducting research during grad school, I cannot provide much impressive background/neither did I take classes on that specific topic, I just think their research is cool and relevant.(same area of computer science but it's a rather broad area and one professor usually cannot cover "everything"). Does it still make sense to choose such a professor as POI in my application, although I might not provide any technical "expertise" directly to the lab?
  9. Thanks for the advice! In my case there was a consensus of the reviewers with some critiques. But the one that was labelled a "risky" change was only mentioned by one reviewer. Its a good idea to rank the tasks by "number of reviewers mentioned it", thanks!!
  10. One of the reviewers of my paper suggested an extension of my paper but added that "this might be a risky change given the short amount of time". How should I decide whether taking this advice or not? Does anyone have a good phrase how to respond here?
  11. Thanks fuzzylogician for thats a helpful thought!! My advisor is not available until next week but I need to write it now. So its on me^^
  12. I received the review of a paper from a conference where my advisor suggested it would be a good fit. But now I received a "conditional acceptance" and have to resubmit a rebuttal explaining also why the paper would be a fit to exactly this conference. The problem is, I could of course submit it to another conference with a "perfect" fit and not choose to try to change the focus of my paper, but now alot of time passed since the submission and I will graduate this year. So this publication would greatly enhance my CV. What would be the best way to write a rebuttal in my case? Was anyone in a similar situation and got the paper accepted? If yes how did you do it? Any advice would help, thanks:-) EDIT: Sorry I think this would have been a better match in the "publications" forum.
  13. Hi, I am stuck on writing my journal paper now for a while. I dont really have someone to proofread it right now, so I need to edit it on my own. How do you usually review your own writing/paper? Is there any guideline on how to "view the writing from different perspectives" for example? Thanks for any advice.
  14. Hey there, does anybody know how I find papers in Google Scholar that include several keywords and filter those, that include ALL keywords? For example if I type "Apples Rabbit Food" then the result list should Show only the papers that include all three words. Thanks
  15. I got the email after my request about how the application process works for interns.
