  1. I think your profile looks strong! If you stay another year in undergrad I'd encourage you to continue your research or work deeply on some project in statistics that interests you! Of course, advanced courses are good too, and I think admissions committees like to see students strong in both coursework and research or indep. projects. I think your research statement is generally true...you are not expected to have substantial results in rigourous mathematical statistics, although some type of research or substational project is more than a good idea. You are correct too that the first two years are primarily coursework, although there are oppurtunites to start your second year if you are prepared! Best of luck to everyone!
  2. Although the Yale statistics website states "GRE scores for the General Test and for the Subject Test ... should accompany an application.", the subject test is not absolutely neccessary, unless it has changed for this year. (Source: I am a first year PhD student in the department, and did not take any GRE subject tests!)

    Yale

I will be attending Yale this Fall as well! (Supremum: I will also be attending the PhD in statistics program...we will definitely get to know one-another!) I am thinking of applying for on-campus housing for my first year, depending on my ability to get to New Haven to apartment shop....we'll see what happens.
  5. Thank you everyone for your input so far - I really appreciate it! I've also been discussing with my current professors which is giving me some insight as well. The financial difference is around 10,000 per year, and I have been considering the different academic oppurtunites / placements (my interests are in pure theory, mostly). Again, thanks for the advice, these are some good things to consider! Sisyphus, 1 I will send you a message in a moment!
  6. Hello all! I hope it's all-right to add another 'please help me choose thread' to the forum! I will be going into a Statistics PhD program this fall and have narrowed my choices down to either U Michigan or Yale and just wanted some opinions. I have searched this board so I have seen what people have said in the past, but still wanted some advice! My research interests tend to the theoretical (probability theory along with stochastic processes) side of things, and I think Yale is a very good fit here. (Michigan, with the larger department, certainly has a wider diversity of subjects though). I was offered funding at both programs; but, Yale's offer was significantly nicer. I visited both departments and would say that I felt that Yale was the overall better fit (but as these were my top two departments, I naturally enjoyed both!) for the actual statistics dept. (my primary concern), though I did enjoy the U Michigan campus and Ann Arbor region more than Yale and New Haven. With the above in mind, I am leaning towards Yale. However, I know that Michigan is more highly ranked in both the US News and NRC rankings, and naturally want to have good opportunities after I finish the program I choose. (I recognize it is very competitive, but I would like to stay in academia). I've also heard that the US News penalizes for smaller programs (and Yale's program is rather small) and the NRC rankings may be out of date. I'm not sure how accurate these claims really are though, which is another reason why I am having trouble coming to a final decision. (The phds.org rankings for student outcomes for the two programs are very close, at least.) So, I would say I would be happy at either school, but am definitely leaning towards Yale, but want to make the best possible choice! Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated
  7. The 2013 USNWR rankings are avaliable here : http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools It looks like the new rankings are in the areas of Business, Law, Medicine, Engineering, and Education (only). Of course, there is a lot more to consider than rankings, but it is still interesting nonetheless!
  8. I am! But according to the results survey some acceptances were already sent out last month, so I am not very optimistic...
