  1. Hi MSW_CU, I can't say specifically what the GPA is, I wouldn't be surprised if someone got in with a B+, I think the experience definitely is a huge component of the application. As for foucaultmania, I think the MSW is popular in Canada because it's almost the only way to make a decent salary as a social worker, also opens up just about every door in the social work field - hospitals, school boards, private counselling etc.
  2. Hey MSW_CU, I am actually a Carleton (2 year) MSW student currently. I just checked my e-mail and I was accepted to Carleton on February 15th (my first contact/indication of acceptance was from Sue Brady - so look out for that name in your e-mail). I'm not sure what they are looking for or how they make their decisions - I can only offer a little bit about my experience. I had about 4-5 years of volunteering (3 different organizations), 2 years working full time as an addictions counsellor, I had an A- avg. in my last 2 years at University, and had completed an additional college program in addiction. I know that my cohort has a very wide range of interests/experience, which is why I can't offer more in terms of what they are looking for. I think if nothing else, the fact that you addressed the structural social work approach in your application will definitely help! If you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know,
  3. Scotto123 I'm at Carleton now completing my MSW. I'm not sure about the advanced stream, as I'm in the 2 year, but Carleton was the first school I heard back from. They were significantly earlier than all of the other schools, I heard mid February. Hope that helps, Amy
  4. Definitely not a ridiculous post, and I am confident that there are probably a lot of people reading this post and thinking the same thing. I agree that finding someone shouldn't be your focus, and by the sound of things, it doesn't seem like it is. My best piece of advice is to push yourself outside of your comfort zone and try new things. Get involved with the graduate association affiliated with your school. That way you will come across intelligent/passionate people that may not be in your field. I am sure that they have graduate outings/bar on campus, and this is probably your best bet. I wasn't looking for a relationship when I found my significant other, but I was constantly putting myself in situations where I was able to meet new people. That way, if nothing else, you can expand your circle of friends... and who knows where that can lead!
  5. Hi Stephanie, I agree with ladybug, do as much as you can in the next year to strengthen your resume - you can even try to contact the university directly if you are unclear about where you need to improve. To give you a little background about my experience - I applied to my masters a few years ago, and was devastated when I didn't get in anywhere (naturally I figured I was the only one and didn't realize a website like this existed). Taking that time off actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I applied to a post graduate college program in addictions - the entire time I had been interested in psychology and mental health - and after spending a year in this course I realized that I was meant to work in the addictions field. I have now spent the last 2 years working in the field, I absolutely love my job and I am planning on starting my masters in social work this fall. Had I gotten into my masters right away, I would have ended up in a different field of work, totally outside of where I should have been. Things sometimes happen the way they are supposed to. So know that you are definitely not alone by any stretch - have a little bit of faith and spend the next year working at it, and I am sure you will get into your Masters! (and just in case - apply to a couple more schools!)
  6. I went to visit the campus/city this past weekend. I would definitely recommend checking out the Glebe and Old Ottawa South. The Glebe has a lot of local shops and places to walk to and a lot of character. Old Ottawa South is very residential but also beautiful. If you haven't had the opportunity to check out the city/campus yet - you will be pleasantly surprised when you do. Although the buildings aren't particularly old, the actual property that the campus sits on is beautiful. After going to visit in person, I am definitely looking forward to moving there. I think I've decided that I am going to get an apartment/live alone rather than rent with people. I feel like at 26 I may be a little too old for a house full of people. This will definitely be more expensive (From what I have seen anywhere from $750+ -- usually around $850 with parking). That's another thing I realized this past weekend, if you are bringing a car with you to campus, try as much as possible to get parking included. Street parking is more expensive, and they can change parking signs at anytime - in which case your car gets towed. (Speaking from experience).
  7. I haven't heard anything from U of T, but from what I see in the results section of this website, it looks like 3 people from the waitlist received a call within the last 2 days offering admission. I am assuming not hearing anything by now is not good new, time to start planning my move.
  8. I know this is a little of the York topic, but has anyone from the 2 year MSW waitlist heard anything from U of T ? It looks like the turnaround for decisions previously has been 5 and a half - 6 weeks. Which means we should find out any day now...
  9. Good Morning, I just wanted to check and see if anyone else had been or is going to Carleton. I should be starting my MSW there this fall (provided I don't get off the waitlist at U of T). And thought I would start seeing if anyone else out there is going - if they have started looking for a place to live at all (where the best places are). And if anyone has any recommendation on residence vs. living in an apartment or in a room of a house.
