  1. They do.... very rarely though, but I know quite a few who got their funding from elsewhere - their own countries, some external research institutes etc. and some unis do have scholarship international students can apply.
  2. If it's syntax and semantics that you're interested in, I'd say choose between UCL, Cam and Ox. Edinburgh is good for syntax, but I personally think they focus more on applied ling and language teaching, but the city is GREAT! UCL focuses particularly on syntax and pragmatics, and they've got famous ppl there... The thing is, you'll probably end up going down their path, rather than developing something new, the influence is just too much (not that this is bad, just something my friend from there once mentioned). Look at what they are doing and if you like it, then I'd recommend UCL (plus it's in London ) Cam has this comparative syntax research group, so that's kinda different and the ling dept. is under modern languages; and at Ox, there is research on the interface between syntax/semantics and phonology, the dept. does philology too - very traditional old school If you are interest in phonetics/phonology. Cam, Ox and UCL all do relevant research. I think it really depends on specifically what interests you the most, and they are all great unis
  3. do you mean the acquisition of that? think it's quite promising! because there are so many L2s! I believe most L2 phonology studies have been looking at English as a second language, and it would be nice to expend it to other languages Sorry for not knowing any famous ppl... but you can find some journal and have a look at their editors and stuff like that hope it helps
  4. hmmm doing sociolinguistics but also interested in phonetics/phonology... so I voted for the latter btw, sociolinguistics is quite popular here? hahah
  5. Congrats for getting into Yale! I know someone who will be attending Yale... but for psychology... not that relevant though Only applied to one uni here in London, and still waiting for my funding btw, nice thread!
  6. Hi! Just saw this and thought I might offer some of my experience here in the UK (not that you need it for you've made your decision! lol) one thing I can say about the one-year MA here is BUSY!!! hahah coursework and everything, guess that's what we get when trying to finish an MA in one year though... But you'll enjoy it if you love pressure not sure about how competitive it is comparing to an MA in states, but if you can get a good grade (and yes, i mean distinction), i'd say pretty good chance that you will be accepted into PhD programmes in the US and Canada! Good luck anyway!
