  1. Hello, I'm reapplying to the same PhD programs as I did last year, and some schools' application asks whether I have previously applied to their graduate program? Is there a particular reason why this is asked? Is there any issue with not answering this question? Aside from a few, significant changes, my application is largely the same including LORs and parts of my personal statement. As such, I'm a bit uncomfortable with the idea of them comparing this year's application with last year's. Does anyone have any recommendation on how to handle this? Many thanks.
  2. For all the German applicants, I would imagine that the discussion of 10 billion euro bailout for Cyprus has caused some delays in the funding process.
  3. Seriously...? On the other hand, I hope it means decisions are released Friday. Because otherwise they're going to be getting a LOT of phone calls on Monday
  4. I also kind of like these rolling responses instead of having them all released at once. Each person, accepted or denied or alternate, gets more attention then they otherwise would, and it seems good for coping
  5. Congratulations all. For the rest of us waiting, I've been feeling more calm as the end of the month draws near. While it's certainly unforcomfortable having our futures consigned to this unending purgatory, I at least feel that I can safely fantasize about receiving a full grant without having to possibly confront the harsh reality of the situation. Each additional day is sort of the last chance I feel we got to do this. A bit morose perhaps, but it surprisingly makes this wait more bearable
  6. By decent jobs do you mean academia? Or some sort of long term fellowship?
  7. There's a stigma against grad school, that you "need" to complain about it. Or that no matter what you do, it's going to be overly demanding, and mostly miserable. Yet I've never heard people talk about why they actually go in for it, and I don't think most people readily throw their lives in a hellhole for 5+ years. So what do you guys like about it? Can you share some of your most enjoyable experiences? Or if you are one of the mythical few that absolutely loves it, can you share why?
  8. Hi, two questions. 1. In my letter of affiliation, my mentor gave a fairly detailed timeline of how the project would be broken down over the 9 month period. I've read that a timeline should be given in the statement of purpose, but since this is already in the letter, should I include it in the essay as well? 2. I'm applying for a theory project in the sciences, so the cultural take-away is a bit difficult to express. Is it sufficient to say that I plan to take what I learnt/studied in country X back to the US and share it there through teaching or conferences? Thanks!
