  1. Hi everyone, At this point, I am really only choosing between MSFS and SAIS and was hoping to get feedback on MSFS's alumni network. The employment data from MSFS suggests that a large chunk of graduates do end up in the private sector and multilateral development banks. Compared with SAIS (and that might just be due to the larger class size), however, I'm struggling to find MSFS alumni in visible positions in the private sector and to a lesser extent at the multilateral development banks. Am I missing something here? My feeling is that in terms of academic reputation, SAIS and MSFS are fairly even so the alumni network in the MDBs/private sector might be the deciding factor for me. I am not pursuing a career in the foreign service.
  2. Hey guys, I'm out of the country and wasn't able to go to MSFS open house at Georgetown. For those who did, any thoughts or insights?
  3. Hi guys, I'd like to restart this discussion as decision day nears for many of us. As for me, I'm ever so slightly leaning toward SAIS because of 1) the greater emphasis on econ and quant; 2) larger, more visible alumni; 3) MSFS reputation (deservedly or not) as a foreign service feeder school. I'm more interested in working in the MDBs and private sector. I have a feeling my personal and academic experience would be better at MSFS (small class size, professors seem more invested in their students, stronger sense of camaraderie) but SAIS might just be better aligned with my professional goals. At SAIS, I would concentrate in IDEV and at MSFS, either IDEV or Global Business & Finance. Thoughts? I guess part of me is concerned that since SAIS just seems to do a better job of selllng itself (or maybe simply tries harder at it!), I might be missing some of the positives about MSFS.
  4. Thanks for that insight, Gov2School. I guess I'm concerned that I might not get in to SFS and might have a better shot at Georgetown's public policy school. I get the impression that SFS admission is far more competitive. But maybe I should just save the application fee and apply to SFS.
  5. Hello there, I'm applying to SAIS and would prefer to spend the two years in DC. At the same time, I'd be happy to attend SAIS even if that will mean spending the first year in Bologna. Any thoughts or insights here? Does saying you're open to either campus make you more competitive? Is it harder to get into the 2-year DC program than it is the Bologna/DC program? Thanks!
  6. Hi everyone, Does anyone know if there might be a disadvantage to applying to both the IR and public policy schools at Georgetown and GW? I would be specializing in IR in the public policy schools. Also, the essay prompts for Trachtenberg and Elliott are more or less the same (see below), so how different would your essay for one school have to be from the other? I imagine that the rationale you could make for attending Trachtenberg (IR) and Elliott would be very similar. Thanks! GW TRACHTENBERG ESSAY PROMPT In an essay of 250 – 500 words, state your purpose in undertaking graduate study in your chosen field. Include your academic objectives, research interests, and career plans. Also discuss your related qualifications, including collegiate, professional, and community activities, and any other substantial accomplishments not already mentioned on the application, or resumé/curriculum vita. GW ELLIOTT ESSAY PROMPT In an essay of approximately 500 words, state your purpose in undertaking graduate study at the Elliott School of International Affairs. As part of your statement of purpose, describe your academic and research interests, career objectives, and how a degree from the Elliott School will enable you to achieve your goals. Please be specific.
