Homeless

Or, at least that's how I feel. LOL

I drove the 8 hours to Atlanta on Thursday and then drove around Atlanta for 10 yours on Friday scouting apartments and then drove 8 hours back home on Saturday.

I am both crazy and exhausted.

But I couldn't fathom renting sight unseen. And I have a wish list with items hard to judge from afar. I mostly want to walk to campus and I found that many places bill themselves as "close to Emory" but I would disagree.

However, the area around school is le awesome about sidewalks and being bike-friendly -- huge plus -- but the apartment communities are crazy expensive! Well, for me. I know it's not L.A. and N.Y. expensive but still, $1000 a month is pretty much my stipend. Yet, I cannot, cannot, cannot have roommates. I'm just too old for that.

I found some options and crossed Emory's "grad housing" totally off the list. (see why here)

But still nothing to commit to. I see another drive -- or three -- in the future.

I just had the pleasure of visiting Lafayette on Thursday as well. It was expensive and exhausting, but I couldn't stand renting sight unseen either. The really sad part is the place I deemed my "dream apartment" is indeed the place I'm renting from. Great job, Bionic. 3 days and $500+ later, I'm renting from the place I saw online. To add insult to injury I got stuck in the bad weather this weekend on the way back and had to spend 5 hours on a diverted plane that was only supposed to have been a 1.5 hr flight, and an additional 6 hrs in the ATL airport only to be told, "you can't leave until tomorrow."angry.gif Suffice it to say, I understand your pain on the home search issue. It's way more exhausting than anyone anticipates.

Good luck with your search!

Thanks Kris! I was driving through that bad weather that grounded you. The stress of driving through sheets of rain just made the drive that much more exhausting. I have been on my couch all day.

Unlike you I didn't get the apartment I thought I would when I saw it online so the search continues. Bleh.

I am sorry to hear that the 'grad housing' is so disappointing, it looks pretty good on the website, sad times. Good luck with the rest of your search, something is out there! And on the up side you get to see loads of Atlanta before moving, I am very jealous about that!

Try Highland Lake.

And maybe Harwood, which is directly across the street from campus. Not sure if they have one-bedrooms, but if they do, it is a nice, safe, well-maintained complex.

Did you happen to pass by area around Georgia Tech. If so, what do you think of it? I won't be able to do a visit before the term start, so I'm trying to get the feel about the area from various sources. Thanks! :)

I will have to find out what my financial aid looks like (I'm okay with loans, but I hope I get something different), then I can start looking for apartments next to GaTech. I've already signed up for Graduate Housing for at least the summer...if I don't find an apartment before I attend. Hopefully, I will, and close to GaTech. But, still, this waiting is making me very nervous. Anyone have any advice on Home Park or in MidTown?...

For those of you searching in Atlanta, I'd recommend ProMove (free apartment locator) or similar service. It will significantly cut down on the amount of vehicular wandering you'll need to do. I used it when I moved to Atlanta for my MPA and it worked like a dream...am also using it in the current search as I prepare to start my PhD at GA Tech.

A side note on searching near Tech, I understand that there's been a minor crime rash near the campus; so, be very thorough in checking out potential places within walking distance of campus.

Yes, Promove! I think that is the company we used way back in 1992. They were so helpful. And they were absolute Diet Coke pushers! We would be filling out an application and 2 or 3 employees would walk past us, each of them offering us a Diet COke! My husband went to use the bathroom and in the back hall he saw cases of it stacked to the ceiling. lol. I guess that is how they all stayed so upbeat and peppy!
