Applying to econ PhD programs, I got so tired of opening up a different admissions page every time just to check a deadline or see if a school wanted 2 or 3 letters. At some point I put together my own list to keep track of everything, and it honestly made the whole process a lot less overwhelming.

I turned that into a small website: **gradlist** https://thegradlist.com. Right now it's a simpler version, just for Economics PhD programs, 50 US schools, showing the deadline, GRE/TOEFL, references, SOP, CV, and application fee for each one in a single card, plus a personal list where you can track your own applications.

This is an early version I mainly built for myself. If it turns out other people need and would use something like this, I'd like to keep improving it. Any feedback, missing schools, wrong info, anything you'd want to see, would be really helpful. Thanks for reading!

Has anyone here been accepted into a good grad school with a 161 in Quant and could please recommend schools? I have a decent math background with mostly A’s and A-’s, along with a couple of B+ grades (courses include Real Analysis, Optimization Techniques, Linear Algebra, Calc 2, Calc 3, etc.).

	Hello,

I am from Western Europe and I had a question regarding my eligibility for Econ PhD programs. I assume my profile is very weak, but I was a bit in need of advice.

I hold a bachelor's degree in social-economic sciences from a low ranked (top 400 school), master's degree in Economics from the same university, and an additional research master in Economics from a top 75 univ. I used a GPA converter to convert my grades.

Undergrad: Social-economic Sciences (top 400)

GPA: 2.87 (ranked 9/70, was not trying for grades/PhD at this point)

Master 1: Economics (top 400)

GPA: 3.47 (ranked 2/16.) Got first or second of my degree for every course except for one. My master's thesis won an award.

Master 2: Research master in economics (top 75, need good grades to enter)

GPA: 2.87 (ranked 10/14)

During the 5 years of study, I failed an exam once.

	GRE: Not taken yet.

	Relevant courses and grades:
Undergrad.: Mathematical methodology (B), Statistics 1&2 (B), Intro to Economics (B), Intro Micro (C), Intro Macro (C), Intro Econometrics (C), Public Economics (A), International economics (A), industrial organization (C), Social-economic analysis (A+), Bachelor's project (B), Global Economics (A), History economic Thought (A). Wasn't thinking that grades mattered at this point.

Grad.: Public Economics (A), Financial Econometrics (B), Macroeconomics (A+), Applied Welfare economics (B), Environmental and transport economics (B), Research methods (C-), Master's thesis (A), Economic analysis of inequality (A+), Econometrics (A). Except for research methods, always ranked 1st or 2nd/16.

Research master: Advanced Microeconomics I (game theory+ec. decision making) (C), Advanced Microeconomics II (mechanism design+general equilibrium) (C-), Advanced Econometrics (C), Advanced Labour Economics (A), Master's thesis (B), Advanced Macroeconomics 1 (SVAR) (A), Advanced Macroeconomics 2 (DSGE) (B), Dynamic Methods (B).

Research: Only 2 master's thesis projects, one bachelor's project, almost one year as PhD-researcher at a quantitative public health department.

	Research Interest: Public/applied micro/health/welfare
LoR: I dispose of two reference letters at the top 400 Univ. Both are economists, 'highest' publications would be journal of public economics, journal of economic theory, and multiple journal of health economics.

Additional relevant information:

As mentioned, I was not aware of the importance of grades/choosing more mathematical courses during my undergrad. I became aware during my first master's degree, where I mostly felt like I got the maximum grades possible except for 3 courses. My master's thesis won an award, and my thesis supervisor strongly urged me to try for a PhD by following a research master's in economics. However, I did not have the financial means to get accommodation near the university, because of which I made the very big mistake to spend almost half the day commuting to pursue the degree (instead of working and then pursuing this degree). Ultimately, I felt like I couldn't defend my chances this year as well as I could have, but this of course is an easy thing to say and I cannot expect for committees to take this into account. Both of my thesis supervisors (and reference letters) are quite enthusiastic about my research capabilities.

Last year, I applied to some econ PhD programs (however without any guidance in this process so too randomly) and got some interviews, however I did not get anything in the end. At that point, I got a bit desperate as I did not have any idea about whether my profile was just too weak to get into an econ department anyways. One of my thesis supervisors had connections with a prestigious quantitative health economics/epidemiology statistics department and strongly recommended me to apply there, and I ultimately got this position.

I have been working there for a few months now. However, I have realized that my main interest still lies in academic economic research, and not in the health statistics journals. I have generous funding and I am allowed to aim for economic journals as long as there is an intersection with epidemiology (despite my supervisor not being an economist, but a programmer/statistician), but I still feel it is not ideal for an economic research career. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could illuminate me on how weak my profile is or whether there is still any chance I could do my PhD at an economic school, which would give me a chance of an economic academic research career later.

Feel free to tell me if my profile is by far not enough, I just need to know to determine my options. In case I would stand a chance for a PhD program that could reasonably lead to an economic academic research career, could you tell me for which quality programs it would be worth applying for, and which not? My former supervisor told me the only way to find out is to apply everywhere, but I do not want to waste money in the application process if I would get kind of 'desk rejected'.

Thanks in advance, and apologies for the longer message or if this is not the place to post this!

Hello, I'm wondering if any former(or current) Georgetown Econ PhD applicants can shed light on the status of my application. Firstly, I'm not asking the department directly because they say not to inquire about the application status in their FAQ. I applied to the program in January and haven't heard anything since. It appears they've sent out a few offers, waitlists, and quite a few rejections based on reports from gradcafe but I've heard nothing. The lack of a formal rejection makes me think that I've been silently waitlisted but I really have no idea. I have a few other comparable offers I'm weighing but GU would be my first choice so I would like to have closure on where I stand.

Does anyone have experience with the GU Econ admissions process? Do they tend to do late rolling admissions or am I past the point of no return now?

Appreciate any insight you could give.

I am considering a career switch. I have had a successful career as a software engineer and engineering manager for the last 5 years. I hold an undergraduate degree from a top CS school in Canada. However, I never really enjoyed computer science and I was pretty depressed during my undergraduate program, so I have a really poor GPA of 2.3. (The conversion absolutely kills me here, I got about a 68% average which for my program was slightly below average). I did not do well in my math classes, mostly due to mental health and anxiety.

I would like to pursue a masters degree in economics. In contrast, I have always been passionate about economics and often devote my free time to reading and contemplating the topic. While I lack formal experience in the field, I am interested in pursuing a master's degree in economics.

Now that I am older and my mental health is in a much better place, I'm confident that I can excel if given the opportunity. If I crush the GREs, would that be enough to compensate for the poor GPA? Should I re-take math courses at local universities to show that I understand the material?

Am I doomed? Is there any way ANY graduate program will accept me? It does not have to be a top school. (I am open to schools both in North America and Europe, I have been living and working in the New York for the last five years, but I am a Canadian citizen).

I am not sure whether they do mean income taxes or payroll taxes, so if we include both taxes, how can they increase the marginal cost of labour? Is this because they incentivise the employee to seek better pay as a means of mitigating the impact of such taxes on their wages?

I'm just gonna cut the crap and get straight to the topic.

I got 2 offers for the above programs. For those who are less familiar with these 2 programs (since its a US-dominated forum):

Cambridge: leading to a PhD conditional on an average grade of 70 across the modules in MPhil, and by historical statistics, 50-70% students met the criteria. However, funding is not guaranteed.

UCL: No funding for MRes (but I can afford the MRes). Average of 50% across courses to enter the MPhil/PhD, where there will be TA positions for unfunded students and it will generally cover the tuition fees + 20k annual stipend.

I know Cambridge Econ is rock bottom these days, but this is why I am struggling:

	1) I plan to go for Macro, and Cambridge seem to have a larger faculty, where UCL's strengths are in labor and econometrics.

	2) Although the program is criticized for its poor teaching quality and less guidance provided to students, but dude, its Cambridge. Although I am not considering entering the industry, but who knows what will happen 10, 20 years later, and Cambridge definitely dominates over UCL.

Finally, I hope you guys could offer me some suggestions.

so i want you guys to give me tips and advice on where should i aim and what to do in the next 12 month left until the next application window (which i'll be applying in)

here is a quick look at my resume:

undergrad in economics at the best program in my country (around 350-400 in the world) unknown amongst top programs in the us. with a minor in mathematic

undergrad gpa: 3.99/4 economics , 4/4 math ( i also have a U15 medal in national math olympiad)

math courses so far : Calc I-II (i also TAed calc II for 2 years) , differential equations, real analysis 1 , linear algebra, elementary combinatorics, stochastic processes, statistics I-II, mathematical economics .... all A/A+ s

economics courses: micro I-III and macro I-II , metrics, applied metrics(will be taking next sem) , IO, Public sector economics I-II, labor and a ton of subfield related courses (development, energy,...) All A/A+.

GRE: expecting to get a 99th percentile score in the quant

Interests: Micro theory, IO, applied metrics, development

i'm aiming for top 20 Phd prgrams and safety schools in 40-80 range for the next year (2023 admission cycle) do guys think i'm aiming too high?

but i want you guys opinion on something. i really like the market design/ micro theory research and i mentioned my course work in economics so far. i want to know your opinion on what math courses should i take in the nest semesters? my university policy allows 2 more math courses. i'm thinking about graph theory and another course. what you guys think? is graph theory useful in the micro theory/ IO or should i go for more advanced analysis/linear algebra? or anything that you think helps in the micro theory field?

also let me put this out: economics undergrad is really strange in my country. there is a very limited math courses available (calc and stats and mathecon only) and i took most of the courses mentioned in math dep which is rare between econ students and thats why i said that i have a unique resume :). so for this reason (bad math background) most of profs in my country don't take undergrad students as RAs but im contacting them and might start RAing a Chicago graduate professor soon. but the question is do you guys recommend emailing foreign profs and asking if they need a RA mainly because there is not that many micro theorists in my country and thats my field of interest.

also if you have any comment/ advice for me to do in the next year before i apply to grad school i appreciate it.

	thanks for your help guys.

I have some retaken courses, both in my undergraduate and masters. How the universiy admission team will evaluate mt transcripts? Do I stand any chance to get into a top university Econ program? Thanks

Hi guys. Recently I've applied for the Master's in Economics at Cambridge. Since I haven't noticed any posts collecting updates for the admission process, I thought I could create one for people to share their information on their updates.

For me, I've applied for MPhil in Econ Research and the diploma. My application was submitted on 3, Dec. Currently, my application is under review by the department.

Any sort of updates/info are welcome.

I believe this is gonna be another tough cycle. Best of luck to all who read this thread.
