Oh man I just saw this looking at these forums for something else. I graduated SIPA in '09 and you guys seem to be dying for info so here goes. I learned an incredible amount at Columbia but there are definitely downsides to be avoided. No one at SIPA will hold your hand. I saw one of my advisors like twice. There are lots of interesting classes and interesting people and a temptation to treat it like undergrad where you try a little of this and a little of that. No one will stop you, but dont do that. Have an idea what your direction you are going and do it. The concentrations are all di

  4. I had a very pleasant and quick conclusion to the program search today. I've decided on University of Washington. Again, congrats to everyone who has made their decisions and the warmest, best wishes to anyone still waiting. I'll probably stick around here though, at least for a while, due to the good company.

  5. So this afternoon I a LOVELY call from RISD, saying I was ACCEPTED... ecstatic. I will find out about funds next week! But first acceptance! It feels really good! Nice to hear there's still good news for others out there too!

I felt absolutely nothing when i got into sais with fellowship, but getting into a top b-school such as Wharton will be the greatest day of my life and the mba will be a truly transformational experience professionally, personally, and socially. As much as I like SAIS' curriculum, it just won't do the same: questionable private sector placement, and I don't think I will learn that much from my classmates.

  9. Exactly. Who knows, and it doesn't help to compare yourself too much to another, especially since you don't know exactly what was going on in her application/at the institutions to which she applied. I remember when I was in my MA program and lurking around here, I became terrified that I had neither conference presentations nor published work under my belt. I thought for sure compared to others I would be doomed in these categories, but it didn't matter much in the end, as far as I know. Which isn't to say that having experience in these areas wouldn't help boost someone else's application. B

  10. wow... just wow.... because all of the SAIS applicants are on this forum, and they're not the type that do their research in more than one way on the internet. You really are something aren't you. I don't even know why you still post here, or in this thread. Why don't you attend an MBA student party and you can all laugh at the pathetic IA/IR programs and drink champagne you bigoted waste of time.

Honestly, with that smug attitude Revolution has, how would he fare at a grad school like SAIS? I would think very badly. IA/IR programs are generally quite community driven (especially in schools like Fletcher, SAIS, SFS) and having a holier then thou attitude would surely alienate him from his classmates?

  31. It's definitely possible to improve that much, especially since you were really rusty your first try and didn't review much. I would recommend against a GRE prep class even if it were feasible; they're overpriced and only marginally helpful. Manhattan is supposedly great for Q practice, so you're mostly set. I see you've already used one Barron's book, but I really like and highly recommend another one called Barron's Six Practice Tests (the tests are very similar to the real GRE in content and difficulty--and it's cheap!). Oh, and Magoosh has some great free PDFs on their site.

  36. A suggestion...if you find obvious spam, very repetitive or repeated extremely objectionable posts on the forum, may i suggest reporting them to the moderators and administrators of the forum rather than making posts in the threads directed at the member who probably won't even read them. Go to the poster's profile and the post in question and click report member. Explain the reason for the report. The moderators will then take the action that they feel necessary and appropriate. They are very busy people and can't find everything. We have to help them. Let's keep the great stuff happening

What's the point of wasting aggression and energy on, for all intents and purposes, a collection of ones and zeros on the Internet? Save up your capital for when you can actually make a difference. Terrible attitudes will out themselves and make someone virtually unemployable in the type of work you are discussing. Besides, Revolution has made it clear that he has no interest in that type of work. You can argue that he's taking up a spot that should rightfully go to some paragon of social justice, but the fact is that different perspectives are infinitely more interesting (and useful) than a c

I really understand how you guys are trying to keep things civil, but I guess it's just a matter of character. Those of us who are more aggressive versus those of us who are more relaxed about things. I can tell you for sure that if he was in my class at SAIS (for example) and approached the discussions in class with the same attitude I would make it a point to factually hammer him at every occasion possible. Why? It's because there are certain people that do not appreciate what they get. They think they are entitled to certain things just because they were mildy successful earlier. Then

  45. Just to share with those who have received rejections and have fewer programs to hear back from, I applied to 13 programs and got 12 rejections. I got 1 acceptance and it was to a really good program at one that was one of my "reach" schools. Despite my recently strong academic performance, I had a lot to make up for. It just takes the right school being willing to take a chance on you, so don't necessarily give up hope!

You can still find something in Brookline if you're flexible. You can take the T's Green C line from further out on the Brookline/Brighton border (Washington Sq and further) where things get a little (not tons, but a little) cheaper. Steer clear of the B line, if you're not comfortable with billions of drunk undergrads running amok and puking on your front steps, this is a good warning to anyone. Really steer clear of the B-line in general. It will make you want to stab yourself in the eyeball, some stops are less than 1/4 mile apart and they have to stop at every light. It's a disaster. 48. Most places around the triangle that a typical grad would WANT to live do not do pre-leasing. The places that do pre-leasing are usually more geared for undergraduates moving off campus. In chapel hill, renting close to campus, you will want to start looking now until June, and then pretty much start calling to inquire how far out you can sign a lease. It all depends on when their current tenants are moving out. Most rental units in Durham want immediate leasing, as well as Raleigh. If you are looking for the fall, most tenants don't have to give more than 30 to 60 days notice to vacate a

  49. I can't say that I looked back and wondered too much. I did a bit during my third year, but it was different - I was feeling depressed and unmotivated in my PhD program, and my other choice during my application season was a 2-year MPH program (I had originally only been planning to get an MPH, possibly work for a few years, and then return for a PhD). I eventually got over it through counseling and by realizing I had made the best possible decision for myself at the time, and also reminding myself that I couldn't go back in time, only forward. It was up to me to make the best of the decisi
