    2017 Acceptances

I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND! Thank God! I cried in my office for an hour because this is the best news I've heard all year.

  2. Officially on the waitlist at Boston College! If anyone is still waiting to hear news: Received an email notification first directly from director of the PhD program asking for the best times to call. Received a phone call later from director, explaining the waitlist procedure (which is the same as a normal waitlist) as well as funding information if accepted off of the waitlist. Immensely honored to be considered! Good luck to everyone as we enter February! For all those who haven't heard news yet, don't lose hope! For those who have only received bad news so far, keep you

  7. Hey I didn't really know where to post this, but I just wanted to give a shout out to every potential grad student out there who is dealing with waiting for decisions AND having their plans potentially derailed by the immigration order yesterday. I'm NOT trying to make this political - I'm just throwing out some support during what has to be a difficult time for our fellow "waiting gamers."

When you get a phone call from an unfamiliar number with an area code that may match up to one of your schools.... and it's a telemarketer. This week is going to kill me.

  13. So if patterns hold from years past I should hear from 6 of the programs I am still waiting on before Friday...some of them I should have heard from last week...but in this world no news isn't bad news. Best of luck to everyone and here's to hoping for good news this week

  14. We have to stop saying that we need to "not sound political". Being political and debating those opinions are a vital element of a democracy. When we stop doing that we have problems. We have Trump today because we stopped debating, because we all stopped being political. Yes this is absolutely political. Most of us are not xenophobic jerks scared of what the future holds, most of us fully support bright and talented people from all over the world coming into this country, most of us support saving the lives of thousands of families (who are in part forced to leave because of US interfere

  17. Good I think we all need to keep our ambition that we clearly have and keep applying and working away the way we do, but also keep in mind that there is more to us and to our options than this. Let's always try to look at the whole picture every time we get caught up. For our own sakes. Things will work out regardless.

  18. I know this is a stressful time for many people here and I was in the same boat many times over and over (still haven't gotten in lol). But I just want to remind everyone that at the end of the day- this is just a graduate school program. I know it means a lot and may get you started on your career path, but all of you have the capability already there. Find what gets you fired up and makes you happy and follow it. Do it whether you get in or not and you will be happy anyway. This is just one option but what's needed to have fulfiling careers is already in you so try not to make this into more

Thank you! I'm into two, just waiting on funding info for both. I do love the eco/EM slant, especially in relation to print and manuscript cultures. I do a lot of work with 17th century ms recipe books, and the agency that these (mainly) women assign to the natural world through their recipes really Looks forward to where the postmodern sustainability movement is headed. So much respect for beings they didn't fully understand! We could use more of that right now, imo. Also, congrats to all of these new acceptances and interviews! I think things are about to pick up some serious speed arou

  29. While I was an undergraduate at Notre Dame I took a Ph.D. level sociology course and the class right after the visitation weekend, the grad students asked what our professor thought of the prospective students and he said that were extending offers to everyone who had attended (they would be the fall 2015 cohort). I'm not sure how typical that is but I think they use the interviews to confirm you're a good fit for their somewhat specific program. I think the only reason an offer wouldn't be extended after the visit is if they don't think your interests align well enough. I'm sure they will spe

I'm going for a partnership with Leicester. I messaged the finalist as well! She mainly focused on responding the the cultural ambassador type questions. Last year the earliest interview notification was Feb 3...so some might be finding out by the end of this week! Last year I found out on the 10th and had the interview on the 26th. You have a week to respond confirming you want the interview and that the contact info is correct.

  40. Just to stir the conversation a bit, I am currently enrolled in SPEA's MPA program. For starters, none of the students I have talked to, including myself, actually think that SPEA carries more weight than HKS or WWS. The MPA rankings are flawed to a degree because not only are they opinion based, but there is no standardized metric as to what constitutes an MPP/MPA degree. Most programs offer two separate degrees, an MPA (public administration) typically offered to mid-career professionals and an MPP (public policy). However, some programs such as SPEA and LBJ offer only one degree, an MPA, bu

  42. I'm from the previous season, but I'm Iranian-Canadian and LGBT. The visa ban has me functionally trapped in the US for now - while dual nationals are ostensibly fine, the situation is too unstable for me to risk leaving the country. If conditions for me continue to deteriorate, though (there are rumours of a massive anti-LGBT executive order in the works, for example), I think it's genuinely possible I'll be forced to drop out for my own safety and go back to Toronto.

  43. New poster, longtime lurker. Just received an acceptance email from UCLA. They tell you in the subject line so there is no anxious logging-in or anything. I suspect that they are sending acceptances piecemeal rather than in "waves." This is my first acceptance, after a rejection from Berkeley and a interview/visit invite from Notre Dame. Other notes: UCLA was my undergraduate institution, so I'm definitely waiting on other schools (like Columbia and Wisconsin). Key interests are in race, education, and immigration. Best of luck for everyone else!

  46. Agreed. Great topic. Not to sound alarming, but I would recommend doing some pretty extensive research on the locations of prospective universities as you make your decisions in the next few weeks. Some universities/cities are more welcoming to international students than others. Unfortunately, there have been racially motivated incidents since Trump's election on several campuses, including the one I attend (in a very red, very Trump state). In the current political climate, I would do your homework and at the very least be aware of the situation at whatever school you choose to attend. Good

Our borders should never be closed to someone because of their race, religion, country of origin, etc. <3 to all of you international applicants who are dealing with this on top of the anxiety of waiting to hear back from programs and planning out your futures.

    Fulbright 2017-2018

So devastating what is going on right now in the States and it seems many of you share the same concerns for our freedoms, healthcare access, democratic values, environment, education, and other domestic issues spiraling out of control. We can only hope that solidarity and legislation and checks/balances will lessen the severity of these blows; a country cannot be led by executive order alone. All ll I know is that those of us who are selected and have the opportunity to go abroad, we will have more responsibility perhaps than any other Fulbright who preceded us. To approach international
