    Fall 2018 Cycle

Admitted to the University of South Carolina!!! I know it is not a top program but I was so worried I wouldn't get any acceptances at all I can't describe how happy I am

  3. Not exactly an English program (but lit theory related!), and not exactly an acceptance, but I just got word from UC Santa Cruz History of Consciousness that I am on their short list! I was not expecting to hear from them for a while, especially because they don't do interviews... but I'm thrilled! Final decisions should be out by mid February. Fingers crossed for good news.

  4. Hello guys, I have been shadowing this forum for awhile, reading all the valuable information you guys have posted. They have been very useful. Great to see all of you here! I would like to share that I have received my first acceptance this season from UT Dallas for the PhD in Public Policy and Political Economy program on December 15th 2017 (Not a troll here, just sharing). (Though they did inform that GA/TA appointments are made later in March.) Therefore, I think schools actually do have variability in sending out acceptances. That being said, for the rest of the programs, I am sure t

  5. Most MA programs are more than willing to take your money; UoT's is no exception. And yes, that sort of long work experience is precisely what I meant by a story for the adcom to latch onto. Let me put it this way: whether it's fair or not, your grades strongly suggest you weren't a particularly engaged or motivated undergraduate. Was your application able to make a strong case that this is no longer true? An interesting research question is nice, but it doesn't substitute for a coherent argument about why the person who was content to average a B-/C+ is not the person applying to the pro

  6. Since I asked the question, I may as well answer my own question too. I am applying for an Open Study award to go to Brisbane, Australia and complete a PhD. (last year 6 out of 63 applicants received awards.. haha) I'm about to finish my bachelor's in fashion design with minors in business & Chinese, and I research a leather-like material made with water, sugar, and tea. Thus, for my PhD I'd be developing bacterial cellulose as a sustainable leather alternative! i'm currently in the process of working on my senior design collection incorporating the material so we'll see how that goes.

  11. Hi @pinoysoc, that sounds extremely tough. I also suffer from anxiety and depression and taking my medication honestly helps. I don't know what your finances are like and if you are able to get a prescription. If you have a prescription and a Costco in your area, the medications at their pharmacy are super-cheap and the pharmacy specifically is not legally allowed to discriminate against non-Costco-members. I hope that you hear good news from your schools soon!

  17. hey there, this happened to me as well. i told my top choice program that i had already committed to attending the recruitment weekend for another program and asked if i could arrange a separate visit. they understand that everyone is interviewing people at the same time, so they were very accommodating for me and scheduled me to come when they have a job candidate coming in as well and some other events on campus. congrats on the invites, and good luck!

  18. I love this attitude. I agree completely. Set a high bar for yourself, be specific in your interests, and pursue the things you're passionate about. I feel like a lot of people who take a shot at a PhD are generally doing it for the love of it, in some way or another. Plenty do it just because they're smart and it just seems like a logical step, too... I admit that I'm aiming for the degree because of the benefits it'll give me in my research career, but only made the decision to shoot for it after working in the industry for a few years, and determined that I needed it to do the things I

    Fall 2018 Applicants

YASSSSSS! Welcome to the party, @Len The feelings you wrote about are normal. You're hearing this from a guy who has done this five times already! If it makes it any better, usually all application portals have that check for missing/incomplete option before submitting those life changing things! lol As for age, it doesn't matter! We'll be competing with "youngins" who are just about to finish their undergraduate degree and others who have an extensive CV of working, publications, etc. If you also think about it, there are others are coming from other academic disciplines other

Just got into UC Berkeley for Organic! Cannot believe it! The e-mail says "By this time, you should have been contacted by a member of Chemistry's admission's committee" but this has not happened haha. Should I e-mail the person back saying this hasn't happened? Or is there no point?

We are local to the school so he's going to offer to go in person (not sure if that's an option) but I AM SO EXCITED FOR HIM! P.S. Any PhD interview tips would be super appreciated!

    Ed Policy Hello?

Hello? Is anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Applying for these programs, waiting to hear back, I have become comfortably numb. I'm trying to connect with people who are applying to the highly competitive Education Policy programs. I have submitted my application to Michigan State University and have my Georgia State University and Stanford applications ready to go (once I can afford the fee!). I hope to connect with more prospective Ed. Policy students and compare notes on applications etc. Anyone else with me? Here are my stats: GRE: Verbal - 157 ; Quantitativ

I'm going through this whole process for the first time myself, but I found a lot of great info by searching these forums from years past-- I was looking for different schools, but was able to find a lot of folks who'd shared actual questions they were asked. (Even if you don't find a lot of UCLA-specific posts, I'm betting some questions are probably common across the board.) Break a leg!

    Fulbright 2018-2019

I happened to see someone comment this on a previous Fulbright 2016-2017 board. These were the dates that Fulbright applicants were notified during their application cycle: 2015: January 16th... I think it was a Friday ? 2014: Tuesday, January 28th 2013: Friday, January 18th 2012: Thursday, January 19th 2011: Thursday, January 20th 2010: Friday, January 29th (Apparently they had issues that year with the Embark system going down) 2009: Friday, January 30th

    Fulbright 2018-2019

Hey everyone! This thread seemed like too much fun, so I had to join in! I applied for a Fulbright open study award to Australia that would allow me to do my PhD. Wishing you all the best. It is so nerve-wracking to have had to wait for so many months haha, hoping for the best in the next few weeks! As for the latest possible statistics, 2016-17 is latest application cycle available and there's no statistics for 2017-18 up on the Fulbright website yet. As we're all waiting for the notifications regarding semi-finalist status, what were some of the research projects you guys want to carry

I think they got put up a few hours ago, so it's too early to tell if more will show up later today. Maybe based on here and here. Edited to avoid double posting: @Catsharknado last year they admitted MS starting in February, and no MS reports have come out.

For 2 of the schools I applied to (Northwestern & UW), I didn't contact the POIs (mostly b/c I was a bit slow in actually, you know, getting to the point of actually reading their research) but I still ended up hearing back from UW & being told I'm a strong candidate. I agree with others... I think it's too late to go back on your choice now. Best of luck!

  45. Hey! Awesome! I'm not familiar with Yoon Ha Lee, but I'll look the novel up - it sounds fantastic! The author I worked on (and who I highly recommend) is Nalo Hopkinson; she has several novels and collections of stories. Midnight Robber juxtaposes Caribbean myth figures and dimensional space travel and there's a racialized computer network - it's awesome. 11/10 recommend.

  46. Thank you so much for starting this thread, as I know no one else in my life with these experiences and it can feel lonely to wait it out. I know some people in this thread are commenting about being older while applying to PhDs, but I have the opposite problem. I'm only 20, graduating in a three year program, and seeing the schools that everyone else is applying to is really intimidating. I have a fear that I'll be overlooked in favor of applicants that appear more...adult. I relate to the experience of other posters whose family and friends waive off their concerns and treat admission

  50. Hi MadihaG! Just saw your post and wanted to cheer you up a bit. I am from a different field, but also scored low on GRE and high on TOEFL. My overall GRE score is even lower than yours:) But I do not really care:) I got my master's degree here in the USA and undergrad degree from Russia. Of course, my advice is to look into other programs and schools ( non-top schools and possibly those that do not require GRE) if you do not get accepted this year. Life is life and application season is a big and an expensive gamble---you never know. Good luck!
