Hi all, just came here to echo all the positive vibes about rejections! I myself just received a mass rejection from UBC and although it wasn’t a school I saw myself at, the sting was still there. A reminder that even though we are all stressed during applications, that our psyche is still important!! You guys are all amazing and have something to offer - don’t forget that even if you get a shitty mass e-mail. You chose this stream for a reason and don’t forget it!! Love how we are out here supporting each other - rejection isn’t a sign for you guys to quit and lose hope. If you guys are lookin for a sign that you should keep going - this is it!!!

i had my trusty roommate call again (because calling would be way too anxiety-producing for me). apparently interview invites don't indicate application standing. they're for extra questions (about projects). i'm not quite sure what that means, but i don't think every applicant received an email about it so i would still take it as a good sign?

Ok so I think I need to find a way to block gradcafe from my browser for like a day... I swear when this whole process is over I will STILL be checking every 30 minutes out of habit. Because, you know, knowing about one of the schools I applied to contacting applicants RIGHT NOW is so much more important than getting shit done in my day ?

Okay so I've been pretty quiet on this forum but just had to post to say that I am loving the transparent and accepting atmosphere we have on here! This process has been cut-throat, and I constantly find myself freaking out and comparing myself to others, which obviously only makes things worse. Being able to come on to this site and have so many people sharing similar feeling and situations helps tremendously. I really appreciate you guys!

FRICKITY FRACK IS MY MOOD ALL JANUARY Btw y'all, I got rejected after Skype interview by 1 POI at Rye and 1 POI at Queen's. Normalizing rejection! It's nothing to be afraid of, and I encourage people to share their rejections as well as their acceptances and interviews here. Being turned down is part of the process, but you gotta dust yourself off and try again.

Day, singular? Lol. Amateur. Have been obsessed since my first invite on Dec 16. Nonstop checking, hundred+ times a day. Even while on vacation overseas where there's barely any internet.

Welp, the fact that I didn't get an interview email from Chicago has officially activated A New Level™ of decision anxiety. Catch me deploying the dubious coping mechanism of reading and rereading Sedgwick for the next several hours while eating cookies!

    2019 Acceptances

I'm the one with the Buffalo acceptance Just created a profile for grad cafe, so I'm a little late to the party! I was offered two fellowships in addition to the typical stipend. I've applied to 10 other schools, so it's killing me to know I've been accepted to Buffalo but unsure about many of the others! Thanks to everyone here for the congrats posts! It's exciting to know I've been chosen somewhere!

    Fall 2019 Psychology PhD Applicants!

I was rejected (yesterday) after a preliminary interview via skype/phone on Monday. And I thought my interview was splendid, we connected, and they told me I asked the right questions, had relevant research/clinical experience, and had a top application plus great LoR's... but they don't have the funding to take on another student. I have trouble believing they didn't already know their funding game before my interview, but thats the game of it all, its a big percentage of luck/time/who you know, so: I feel you, I thought I was in the bag with them, and then rugs pulled completely. It stings a ton, but honestly, everything happens for a reason. Humans adapt.

    2019 Acceptances

If they follow previous years, I'd expect more acceptances to come at the end of the month. I don't think Buffalo is done notifying applicants so I see a lot of reason for hope for applicants still waiting to hear back. The beginning of the month is usually schools notifying about interviews/special fellowships which are awarded to a very small percentage of the class.

I got an offer of admission for the PhD in Social Work !!!
  24. 3 points
Falls in line with the whole, work for free for years to 'gain experience' in a good lab that's relevant to what you want to do, work for 15-25k a year in stipends for another 5 years just to get a PhD, and work for a salary that your friends were getting 2 years out of undergrad. You know. Screw the $50-100 that you spent on the application + hours researching and crafting a personal statement. Seriously. Lower ranked programs (if ranking is important) have dates on the same day, too. Like, yeah, shoot yourself in the foot by inviting students on the same day as a top 10 program. Let's see what candidates pick.

    Fall 2019 Applicants

Hey everyone! Let's keep our hopes up and our chins up. I know it's tough seeing the decisions starting to roll in, especially if we're in our second or third application cycle (like me!). But, I am sure there is a place for each of our smart brains. Definitely, anxiety can creep up as the results (and anticipated rejection letters) unfold on gradcafe. Doesn't mean we aren't capable researchers. Whatever school we are admitted into will be the right one!

Just thought I would jump in on the whole "nervously waiting" thing. I've applied to a good number of programs for medieval history--broadly, I'm hoping to study medieval monasticism next year--and somehow the stress levels have been slowly ratcheting up.

    PHD Applicants: Fall 2019

I appreciate the perspective- I live in a constant state of expecting to hear news and that anxiety occupies the majority of my brainspace. Can't wait till I have an answer from all my schools, then at least I can start weighing pros and cons and making some decisions.

Does anyone know who the UIUC acceptance is or wants to claim it? Also if that mysterious soul sees this do you mind sharing your POI's initials? Something tells me that they might never appear but I hate it so much when people use the results page to ask this stuff and I refuse to do it.

I got these from a friend who's deep into grad school already, along with some of my own concerns: for grad students or professors: How much is health insurance and is it any good? (Does it meet the new Affordable Care Act standards? Does it include dental? If someone has had a child, even better.) online or grad students: Is funding guaranteed 'if shit hits the fan'? (Is funding based solely on GPA, and/or research progress, and/or on groveling to the department?) [Obviously you would want to find this answer online or from a grad student, not a PI, since that could reflect poorly on you. When I was looking for info on my home school, I read in the Math Department Grad Handbook that anyone receiving ANY funding must complete "ANY ASSIGNED SUPPLEMENTAL TASKS" at risk of losing funding, which sounds fairly crappy and arbitrary, like "Come in 7-10 on a random Friday when the professor doesn't feel like proctoring the exam". online or grad students: Is there an off-ramp with a degree? (If you don't pass the entrance exam, can you at least graduate with a Masters?) online: Is there a TA requirement? (I think 1 semester of TA is a reasonable requirement, but it does suck if a department expects students to TA for multiple semesters just because the stipend is low.) for grad students, administrators, professors, or online :Are the grad students unionized? for grad students or administrators: Housing: is there like, subsidized graduate housing? Are there accommodations for significant others or spouses or families in housing? (Or pets or handicaps, if those apply to you.) for grad students: How livable is the stipend: Cost of housing in the area or on-campus, distance to grocery stores, etc. for grad students, professors: "What's the town like?" can be important if it's not just "Big city life", imo. for administrators/professors/online: Since I applied to the GRFP as a Senior in Undergrad, I also want to know what the school's policy is with external fellowships. Do students get a one-time bonus or increased stipend? If the stipend increases, will the university match it after the duration of the fellowship? (Most useful search terms to find the answer online: "external, fellowships, policy, graduate, stipend") ^^It can range wildly. Princeton's policy: you get the Princeton stipend, or the fellowship stipend, whichever is greater, plus $4,000 per year. UPenn's policy: One-time $3,000 bonus (which seems like kind of a rip-off compared to Princeton's, but I think Upenn is more of a direct-admit, so it's important in that it gives you access to basically whoever you want to work with). University of Maryland's policy didn't seem that great on paper but I may have to do the math: 50% off your health insurance and 10 credits of tuition remission, max. I can only assume the stipend part goes to the student. Meanwhile, University of Delaware had no particular policy posted. I emailed Financial Services about it. That was a long post and it doesn't have too many questions for professors, so I'll post again when I have more for y'all.

I will verify as a person who was accepted to Buffalo many years ago and attended their recruiting event that they have a very juicy "Presidential Fellowship" that they award a couple of weeks in advance of all of the regular admittees. Indeed, during my visit I roomed with that lucky recipient. If I recall correctly, it's on the order of $30k/yr in a city with a relatively low cost of living, so bully for whoever got it!

    Applications 2019

That you've got the grit just like them. Can your passion, persistence, and work ethic show themselves in your application? They're looking for deep commitment to the discipline and to work with students who ask similar research questions as they do. They want to be able to run their graduate seminars and expect their students to enroll and enjoy the questions and readings being engaged. Remember, a significant portion of your exam list readings will be "suggested" by the POI and the rest of the committee. To make through the grueling process leading up to the exams, the students better enjoy reading and studying many of the works that their professors find valuable.
