not to be too cynical, but i think the real selfish fear to be had in how this will affect academia is in how it might affect the future of teaching as a profession a lot of campuses have shut down and made all their classes into online classes already, and i'm guessing many more will follow amidst this hysteria. once schools realize they can effectively get away with running everything online (if things are able to run smoothly enough along), then there might be more of a push toward online education, meaning less jobs! less pay! and, reportedly, less knowledge-retention for students! ob

  3. The waiting is just brutal. I did some digging and found the first posts reporting results in each year's SIPA MPA admissions thread: 2019: 3/11, 6:30 PM EST 2018: 3/9, 3:43 PM EST 2017: 3/10, 11:36 AM EST 2016: 3/7, 5:24 PM EST In other words, it could be literally any minute. Boy am I glad I spent my time on that, it's helped me calm down exactly none.

  6. This is so hard. This was my second time round and even though I felt like my interview was perfect, I got on the waitlist at EMU. After really getting down, I ended up going the "hope for the best, plan for the worst" route. I applied for 6 jobs, 2 masters programs, and set up 1 skype interview in the two weeks between being told I was on the waitlist and being told that I was officially accepted. I can't explain my relief but I can say that prepping for the possibility of not getting in helped to distract me and also feel better prepared for whatever future came. Good luck!!!!!

  7. Hi Friends. Just wanted to share something. I did me some undercover moment. So I applied to NIH IRTA, Hopkins, Case, Sinai, UPenn, Einstein, and Harvard Since I have an offer standing I wanted to know from other NIH PREP programs when they will notify applicants, so: I called Hopkins first. I was told by a person on the line that the final committee is meeting tomorrow to evaluate who to extend the invitation for the next round of admission to PREP, which is the interview. In addition, the person on the line also told me that perhaps around Thursday is when the first wa

  8. See how good predictor HKS blog-posts are!! 2019 fall saw the same sequence- not admitted, waitlisted, way to notify and then admitted- Just a day before final decisions.. We are on the same path again.. Although I haven’t updated this sheet afterwards but I track it occasionally to know that we are right on track!! So far, it seems 12th it is..

Re: canceled recruitment visits Many airlines are being more understanding than usual about canceled trips and will at least let you transfer what you paid to another trip. I've received emails from United indicating they'll change tickets booked through March 31st for free for 12 months.

  11. I've been asked about my research. How do I see PREP fitting in my academic goals. Experiences that demonstrated resilience. And then more personal questions about my CV. I'd recommend that you do your research of the program, and avoid asking question of stuff they explicitly state in their web-page. Make sure you find a quiet place, with little to no distractions. No need to dress fancy or sound fake. Be yourself and let your personality shine through!

Anyone else still stuck in that awful almost/not quite shutout limbo? I’m still waiting on one school that has sent out a couple of acceptances but it’s all weird and unknown regarding whether this is it for them or if they’re still making decisions. I’m starting to write it off as a rejection in my mind but the uncertainty combined with the desperation to get in somewhere is driving me insane...

  15. Another good question for grad students: What do you do in your spare time? While it be nice to know what extracurricular activities are available in the are, the real importance of this question is in seeing how they react to being asked about their spare time. That will tell you a lot about quality of life as a grad student in the department. Also good to ask questions that get at departmental politics, especially if you can do this not in writing. Who do you have on your committee and why? Who would you not put on a committee together? What are the factions/fault-lines in the depa

  16. I too wish I had known this before applying, as I would not have applied. Frankly, I think it's irresponsible and dishonest of them not to clearly communicate this change on their website, since, as recently as last year, they were offering full funding to a handful of admitted students. What a waste of $117 (application + GRE score report fees). To future applicants: Beware of the now-unfunded Georgetown MA!

  19. I keep refreshing this page and my email like crazy! Like some of you have pointed out, this is unusual of SIPA since they announced the decision earlier in the past. Fingers crossed it will be today! I don't think I can sleep tonight (it's almost midnight where I am!)

  20. Talking to you must be a charm, because I've been trying to get this info unsuccessfully haha. If the timeline is similar to last years, Harvard won't get their admission resolved until late March to mid April. I also imagine that the issue with coronavirus will definitively put a strain on committee decision-making capabilities.

Hi all! I'm a first-year student at Columbia who was on this forum last application season -- glad to see so many prospective Columbia students on here this round and to see that those of you interviewing have had great conversations with David (although as far as I know it's impossible not to have a good conversation with him). Just wanted to pop my head in and say that my inbox is open if you have any questions after decisions come out. Columbia, like a growing number of universities, is cancelling admitted students events due to COVID-19 concerns this spring so if I can be of any help let

  25. I'm in my last semester of grad school and way past the point of applying, but I had a great week that's worth sharing: I took the Praxis, got my 375th clinical hour, and set up an appointment to fill out hiring paperwork for a long-term SLP sub position that will run from May to mid-June. It's been a looong time coming, but there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel!

  28. There was some talk about rankings within the top 50 so I thought I would add the ranking that I've always had in the back of my head. I'd say that any university within each category is indistinguishable from the others within the same category. For example, I think the ranking (or preference one would have) would pretty much be a tossup between any university in the top 20, i.e. Cornell, Northwestern, Ohio, UCLA, UNC, UPenn, Wisconsin are pretty much equal programs, and same is true for all other categories. But most people would prefer any program in the top 20 to any program in the top 30.

  32. The number one thing I learned was that comparing myself to others, specifically on this website, was terrible for my mental health. I logged out after the first week of February when I realized I was feeling absolutely horrible over the success of anonymous strangers. You are your own candidate. Do the work and feel good about it and f*ck the rest. I’m sure this will be taken down...but really wish I had seen someone saying this when I checked here for the first time back in September.

I know a few people have said that they do rolling acceptance based on when you submitted your application but I don't think that is correct. I submitted my application in December and I got accepted, and I have seen few posts similar to my experience. I think they do rolling acceptance in the sense that they send out offers to their first choices and then based on the number of offer acceptances, they send out another batch of offers. They probably rank the applications for each stream, and then send out the offers based on this. Also, I am sure that they are still reviewing application

  36. I have enjoyed our Department a lot. This will be controversial, and will likely trigger some current students at other institutions on the forum, but I truly believe UNC is a top-3 biostatistics program. The culture between students is, in my opinion, our greatest strength. All the students are really sociable. We do our problem sets together and friend groups get formed so the current students hang out with one another outside the department. The only department that even comes close to how rigorous UNC is would be Washington, which I would argue (and I think many of our current st

  38. So HKS usually has a defined timeline for which blog posts go up when. Its sequential. And for the past several years its when the admitted stuents blog post is up a day or two after they have released results. Its not a sure thing but its definitely a pattern and idk why they would deviate this year.

  39. I don't see the harm in asking to meet one-on-one. The worst they can say is no and if that is the case, you can ask to Skype. I am sorry about your plane ticket. You can always try to contact the airline to see if they can refund you or give you credit to use at a later date on another flight.

  40. Here's an update on my application timeline for anyone who comes across my MIT PhDCEP post in the future: I submitted my application through the Chemical Engineering GradApply portal in the fall. I was contacted in February, to inform me that my application was under review at MIT Sloan. I interviewed with a Sloan admissions officer a few weeks later. I was admitted within a week of the interview!

  45. Indeed! The program seems to be in full Cash Cow mode now. The fact they are offering this unfunded program at all is cruel and irresponsible I would say, based on my experience living in DC, that it's pretty much impossible to get by here on anything less than ~25K, and even then it's still extremely unpleasant to live here unless you're making significantly more than that (think $37k+), so to offer an MA in literature in this city that is completely unfunded is absolutely predatory. We're talking total cost of $100k+, while enjoying a very low standard of living throughout. I hadn't loo

  50. About your dog: I think that depends entirely on you and your program. I am in a social science program where the majority of my analysis and writing can be done from home, and I prefer to work from home or from a library (as opposed to my cube in the windowless cube farm). When I was taking classes I was generally there from 9-6 or so, but now that my coursework is finished I am rarely at the school itself. I go for meetings, seminars, interesting kinds of things and I do most of my work remotely. My time is verrry flexible, and if my building didn't prohibit it I would get a dog in a hea
