  1. Posting about BU now almost has a sense of nostalgia attached to it. Oh BU, do you remember when we were both young? Full of hopes and dreams and laughter. How naive we both were that summer. To be that young again...

  2. My fellow comrades waiting for offers, hang in there! I think that I will officially give up on the applications this cycle sometime in June. Of course, the wait becomes harder when everyone around are busy agonizing over choosing one out of the many offers they got. Some good news for us late admits: a) Some schools are cancelling GRE/testing requirements - this is a big deal. I feel the requirement for GRE for professional programs is just a 'straight-jacket' requirement which doesn't make sense. b) Interview cycles are now compressed, so results are coming out fast. Anyway, the battle conti

Got rejected from Syracuse and Purdue this week. It looks like I am headed to University of Kentucky. I realize it's not the highest ranked program, but I am excited about it anyway, assuming COVID-19 doesn't ruin everything. Also, a side note, I think I found out one of my recommenders thought I was applying for Spanish programs, so maybe that played a role in my many rejections! Oh well.

  8. Thank you for your perspective. I'm also in my 40s, haha. I had taken online classes during undergrad, but they did not involve any live meetings using conferencing applications. They were essay, exam, and discussion board based. I only took those classes if they were only offered online (Medical Terminology, Essentials of Pharmacology) or an area of little interest to me (Principles of Management, Social Psych). I dislike talking on the phone as it is, let alone Skype. I also struggle with staring at the computer screen all day long. Personally, I wouldn't have signed up for a

  9. It happened a long time ago; I saw it in the 2009 threads. Apparently they were able to access their reviews via some link they weren't supposed to be able to access about a week early. This was also during the fastlane beta period, so I doubt there'll be the same issue with results leaking now.

  11. Got an email from BU's graduate school telling me they're moving visits online (duh) and to contact individual programs if they haven't reached out already. Um, I did that. It sort of annoys me that I'm being asked to reach out to them when the ball is in their court. I'm trying very hard to be understanding about the difficulties of the current situation, but it's...hard not to contrast this with UW's total 180 (in-person visit to zoom visit) in the span of literally 2 days.

  12. Is anyone else wondering how COVID-19 will be affecting the programs? It's likely going to last for another year to 18 months- I've debated going with Waterloo (already distance ed), because it might be better than a hastily-put-together distance ed program at another school.

Interviews were scheduled untill the 27th...I haven't heard from them yet regarding my own interview and seeing that it seems they are still conducting them as scheduled albeit virtually, then I'm really loosing hope.. Eventually I would love to know what makes an application strong in their eyes..I mean specifics like certain professional experience in specific fields...Canadian vs international credentials...any other strong extra curricular activities...etc. I know it's a case by case basis and really hard to tell but maybe anyone who ha

  17. 1. It never hurts to negotiate. Just be prepared for a no. The reality is that HKS has a decent waitlist of great candidates. Why spend money on someone that they don't have to? 2. My sister went to HKS, yes the Harvard name is shiny and a great talking point at bars... but honestly, her friends who stayed in the policy space got the same jobs as people out of other top tier programs. Now... I will say, with HKS, you do get a network that is unmatched and they are exposed to extraordinary opportunities (those that ride a bit outside of policy in my opinion) and innovation that other plac

  21. If you are going off the rankings from US news then Ohio State (ranks 15) also has a "department specialization" in political psychology. Check more about it out here. I assume this is like a minor that Dwar mentioned for Minnesota. I am going for political behavior, public opinion, and political psychology in American Politics. Duke (7) also is unique in the fact that instead of the standard AP, CP, IR, Methods, and Theory fields they offer other fields. One of those is Political Behavior and Identities. This is one that I wanted to apply to, but they were not accepting applications this year

  22. @graduate2020 From the superficial examination, it seems like JHU SAIS makes the most sense as they are giving you the most scholarship and very generally speaking, it isn't that much of a brand or opportunity loss vs. HKS if they are giving you no scholarship. That beign said, what exactly is your A: specific career path interest (details do matter) B: how much flexibility do you care for (as in if you realize you don't like you can pivot) C : How much does networking matter to you? D : Does the language requirement bother you?

  23. 50,000 for a degree seems steep. If you want to work for government go to NPSIA. Funding is better, research opportunities are better, reputation is better, a fraction of the cost and is in Ottawa. Where the federal government is. Why do you want to go to Munk?

Super helpful and very much appreciated! @MA2596 I am starting to feel more and more certain about ITP for each day that passes but I think it would be a great idea to start a separate thread on this DT vs ITP topic so we can keep each other updated on our reasoning? It is of course an individual decision I find it very interesting and helpful to hear everyone’s thoughts and would love to share my own with you all as well 😊

After a few further conversations I want to modulate my earlier panic a bit. Universities won't know for certain before our commitment date how the fall is going to proceed, simply because no one knows how exactly this is going to play out. Will the worst of it, the part requiring total lockdown, be 6 weeks? 2 months? 6 months? Impossible to say right now. That said, many places are planning to be live, in person, in fall, and a dean at one of my schools (sorry to be vague; trying to be informative while also not making private conversations public) said she would be surprised if things w

It was eye-opening to learn that (insert what stuck out to you about their program). One of the biggest reasons I applied to______ was for a ______________________. 30. Just got the email today for NPSIA! Super happy, now I will have to decide between Munk, NPSIA, and a very very appealing EnvStudies Masters at York... at this point it's scary to say I am entirely unsure which to pick... Also for NPSIA I have "Health, Displacement and Humanitarian Policy" as my specialization (I completely forget which order I placed my top three picks in haha but I think this was my #1) Best of luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back! Waiting is no fun and I hope you all get into your dream programs.

  31. Have ... people seen this? Not English but I just about burst into tears at the prospect !! Have decided the last few days that unless programs begin on campus and in person in the fall that I'm deferring -- and am asking the DGS's of all programs whose offers I'm very seriously considering whether they would allow me to defer in that circumstance. It sucks because it's the last conversation in the world I want to be having, I'm ready to start my PhD tomorrow, but ... 33. Making a decision about which grad school to attend is so difficult and even more when revisits got cancelled and there is lots of uncertainty due to COVID19. I love to take classes in person and thinking about the possibility to start grad school and take classes on zoom and possibly not able to do in person lab rotation is a bit discouraging and it makes me so anxious. I hope by August all this is already resolved.

  39. Hi! I feel you 100% I spent a long time looking into the same questions and this is what I got: For #1 The amount of clinical placements will make you look better for jobs, but not THAT much more appealing considering everyone does between 2-4 anyways. The main benefit of doing more clinical placements is that if they are in a hospital/school/private practice you can get job offers through them. For #2 I've heard from SLP's that I've mentored with that the reason it doesn't matter about the ranking is that its an in-demand field so as long as you are qualified with your CCC's and we

I let them know what I was thinking and asked for their honest feedback. I may have gotten lucky but for the most part people were pretty open and willing to provide their input and recommendations. They were clear that they wanted me there but encouraged me to explore my options and consider all factors before making a decision. One of the professors even offered to give me a call after the visit and follow up. I say all this because I th

I applied to 14 doctoral programs and was shut out. I did not apply to a single MA. But, at the last minute, I found some whose deadlines hadn't passed and now have standing offers. I thought that I was a good candidate. It turns out, however, that the PhD pool is insanely competitive. Consequently, where I struggled to "keep up" with PhD applicants, I shined bright in my MA ones. There are many wonderful MA programs, and these

  42. Right now my main focus is on surviving and keeping my children alive. Myself and both my kids are medically at risk with this virus. While I'm super glad to be pursuing a PhD, I am significantly less concerned about how the virus is going to affect the timeline of my degree than whether or not myself and children are going to survive. My oldest is at the doctor with my spouse (who is not medically at risk, but who works in an "essential" field so has likely been exposed) because my oldest has worsening symptoms of the virus as of 5 am this morning. The doctor was able to get him in to be seen

I’ve commented on this forum a few times but I’ve been seeing lots of questions about things that I feel like only a current student (or faculty members) might know the answers to so I wanted to reach out and provide some opinion and information I’ve learned from others/experience. 1. Funding and scholarships- there are a few scholarships available distinctly for AuD students one that I know is the ASHA Graduate Student Scholarship it has a May deadline. Funding varies greatly by department. Based on my experience information about most departmental funding was provided with a

SIPA in general has reputation of everyone having their NYC lives and the study body not being that cohesive. SAIS generally is better in terms of community. Honestly, you need to visit the two to really get to know. As for McCourt... go there if you want to do IDEV program analysis work or ride the Georgetown mafia to get into Capital Hill... but short of that, it is a pretty poor option to get into most other internationa

All of sudden after unsuccessfully convincing me to stay in the lab for next semester, he's doing all these petty things to me. I checked the pdf version on arxiv and saw that he edited out my name and my profile. I emailed the chief editor of the journal asking for confirmation that my name is on the accepted final version and the guy emailed me back telling me my name is still there. I really don't understand why my advisor thought that

  50. I didn't publish at all during my Masters. Most thesis Masters program don't even require that Masters research work be original research (i.e. it can just be a project that is a proof of concept, a literature review type thing, or something that reconfirms a previously known result using your own code/new code----this usually is a precursor project to PhD work).
