  1. I’m so excited to say that I officially accepted my offer at University of Oregon today! It felt so weird to submit the acceptance letter; I stared at the screen for like ten minutes before I finally clicked send. It’s such a good fit for me, though, and I think I’m going to absolutely love it there. The faculty and students that I got to chat with were all wonderful. I can’t believe this is finally happening! Thanks to everyone here for all your advice and kindness!

I can't sleep thinking about my choices! I'd like to be on the same coast as my family, but I have to sacrifice some things I want to do that. If I went the other way, I'd get those things but I'd have to give up being closer to family and also my relationship. Shit's tough

  3. Hi Everyone, The McGill undergraduate association held an online panel of first year S-LP students from a bunch of schools in Canada. If someone needs help with a decision, they gave a lot of useful information in this interview. I believe the students said they would put their contact info in the comments if anyone wants to contact them directly. Just thought I would share! https://www.facebook.com/1904339623185735/posts/2735162903436732/

I've been on the Berkeley waitlist but last night I got an email saying that they couldn't offer me a spot! I was a bit surprised considering how early it is and I didn't think everyone would've responded by now. I was told, also, that I was first on the waitlist, and the faculty encouraged me to assume that I was in, so it was obviously pretty disheartening to get that email. I think I'd been banking on Berkeley a bit too much because I'm not that interested in the other choices I have. Anyway, feeling a bit crushed over here.

  5. just made an accnt to add a data point. I applied under bioengineering to the ARO. Up until today my last application update was 02/28. However, I checked my account this morning and now it says the last update was on 04/03. Hopefully we find out soon.

  6. I just wanted to say that I agree with this 100%. History shows that as recessions and economic uncertainty starts graduate school applications increase drastically. On the other hand funding is likely to decrease as the endowment and state contributions dry up. This will most likely take the form of less funded offers and smaller entering classes. My advice to everyone on this forum is to take the acceptance you have and hold on for dear life. And the option to master out is a totally valid and good option for students who aren’t enjoying their program or think they’d be happier e

These last stages of the decision-making process are excruciating, especially under the unusual conditions! Today I graced my favorite professors' inboxes with a thousand-word email about the pros and cons of my top two choices. Writing it all down really helped me clarify my own thoughts. I know which program I prefer, but I'm having trouble getting over the trepidation of moving nearly a thousand miles from my hometown, especially when my second choice program is much closer.

  8. So, I think I'm going to officially accept my PhD offer soon. At this point, best case scenario with BU is that I get accepted to their MA program, but if I'm not willing to go into further debt for BC, I'm sure as hell not going to for BU - especially after this aggressive silence. I'm officially over waiting for them. While I'd like to have the option of my WL accepting me, I'm not really sure I'd take them over this offer, even though it would mean I wouldn't have to move. The prospect of finally committing has me anxious af. Last year was such a disaster that I'm afraid something is going

  12. Meta answer: I've seen a couple of posts asking for people to look over a writing sample, but in general I think most peer-to-peer writing sample feedback comes from private swaps. If you see someone in your AOI in the forums here who's been active recently, I doubt most of us would be offended to receive a polite DM asking if we'd be interested in swapping. I probably wouldn't publicly post mine or distribute it widely to anons during an app cycle when I was applying, not because I think GradCafe is teeming with plagiarists or anything, but...well, I'd be totally screwed if it got plagiarized

  14. Yes. Definitely a chance. Work on your writing sample.

  15. My own approach was to read published articles about my topic (I was doing that for a survey of secondary literature, anyway) and use those papers as guides for my writing sample. The one difference I can think of is that I believe, especially for MA applications, that writing samples can be considerably shorter than published articles. But this may not always be the case - there are probably exceptions on both sides. In any case, I think that modeling your writing sample after published papers in your AOI is the best course of action.

  18. Hi! I would say cost is a good way to initially narrow it down-- calculate the full program cost for each of the schools you're still considering and if there's any that are super astronomical, throw them out. Here are some other things to consider: Cost (including rent, moving costs, etc) Location Clinical education model (is there a campus clinic? etc) Clinical placements (how many placements do you do, and where?) Externships available (how many externships do you do? what sort of facilities do they offer externships in?) Assistance finding CFY / jobs (wh

  19. My two cents: I am not that familiar with the American academic reality, but from what I heard from a professor (Stanford alumni) that below rank ~ 15, 20 the difference is marginal and your chances become minimal to get a TT in a good American uni. However, I would say that almost everywhere else in the globe would happily welcome a professor with a PhD from virtually any American university. I think I would follow @Theory007 suggestion, but I think is worth to keep in mind that your options are not only small liberal colleges in the middle of nowhere if you are willing to consider opti

  20. First of all, congratulations on getting into a PhD program! I tend to focus on the positives before the doom and gloom. Getting into any program anywhere for a PhD in political science is an accomplishment, and if it's at a large midwestern state university polisci department as you've mentioned here and elsewhere, it might not be a top 10 program, but it cannot be a bad school. Full stop. As far as jobs are concerned.. People on here and PSR seem to think that working at a smaller or lower tier school (ie a "no-name college in the middle of nowhere") is a fate worse than death. Personal

  26. It'll hurt your application somewhat, only because it's not likely that your letters of recommendation will be written by anybody whose name carries much weight, to be frank. A sterling letter of recommendation from your CO, attesting to your work ethic, commitment to long-term projects, and intellectual aptitude, is likely to do you more good than a comparable letter from an online professor. However, being on active duty in the service is about the best reason one can possibly have for getting their degree from an online diploma mill. It's hard to imagine how this can be held against y

  27. I felt pretty competitive too. Excellent undergrad and grad GPA, 5 yrs research experience, internal fellowship, national conferences, etc. So hey, maybe a last update of 12/20 is a good thing. It's all speculation though and, like others said, we'll know the results soon enough.

I'm a current SLP student at mac. I really like the program as a whole- there are occasionally things that I have issues with, but the program coordinators and professors are accessible and open to discuss. Problem based learning is a huge part of what we do, so if you struggle with self directed learning it might be difficult for you. If you have any specific questions let me know!

  33. Here to add another datapoint. Electrical Engineering, ARO. Originally had 2/28 as my last updated date but like so many others it changed to 4/3 yesterday. Is there anyone who had a 2/28 who did not have a 4/3 update? Or anyone who did not have a 2/28 update who had a 4/3 one? Just trying to figure out what these updates might represent.

  38. Just enthusiastically accepted my offer at Rutgers-Newark. Might be good for someone on Columbia's waitlist. Also whoever is #7 on the Minnesota waitlist is now #6. Rock & roll! By the way everyone this is my third year, and if anybody is considering reapplying next year, let me offer my 2 cents: Do it! But also: Don't put your life on hold! You should still be taking cool opportunities and trying new things! This sounds obvious but lord, I wish i'd followed it.

  40. Wouldn't it be better to just have a google form or an open spreadsheet? I'd rather not provide all that information (some of which might be sensitive) associated with my username here. I'm not opposed to making this information available. I'm opposed to providing it in this manner (a way that does not promote useful data organization for analysis;a way that may reduce significantly one's anonymity). Make only a few fields required for submission.

  41. So I know nothing about political psychology, but I just wanted to say that going off a report published in 2007 is super risky. While it does take a while for things to change in academia, 13 years is a pretty long time. I’d check the placement for the last 5-6 years and go off that, anything over that mark is kinda unusable as too many factors changed. That’s even more so with data from 07, which is just before the recession. The market before the financial crisis is waaaaaaaaaaay different then the market after it.

  42. Hiya!! The structure is what I'm focusing on too. I really like the way Toronto's unit structure works, but I do think it's awesome that McGill has the weekly placements from the beginning of the program (but I'm worried about having shorter external placements at the same time). I'm also thinking about Montreal vs. Toronto. I've been to Montreal a bunch of times and looooved it, but have never been in Toronto at all, so I don't really know what it's like!!

  43. I'm so glad I found this thread! I just had to move back home due to my university kicking everyone out of housing, and it's so strange to suddenly be back home. There were so many things I wanted to do to say goodbye to my university and to DC that I won't get the chance to do now, and there's a lot of grief attached to being thrust into a new stage of life without properly leaving the one before. I like to have a lot of time to think and reflect around big life changes, and I guess I know have tons of time to reflect haha. But it is just really painful, as you all know, to know that I'll nev

May they bring a hopeful smile and a reminder that we never had actual control over anything anyway, because cats are our supreme overlords and we exist solely to do their bidding. Grad school wasn't even my idea, it was theirs.

I've had an overall disappointing round this year in terms of PhD programs, but I did find out today that I've been accepted to the MA/MSIS in English and Information Studies at UT-Austin! This is especially exciting because this means I'll be able to close the gap with my partner after being long distance for over a year.

  49. Unhelpful to ask for an informal chat before interviews. I found it completely unnecessary to read papers for my interviews in advance. I started off doing them, but the papers never came up. You should have an idea of what they do, but focus on knowing how to talk about your own research. Also know why you want a PhD and why that program is a good fit for you. They are unlikely to test your knowledge of their science, and more likely to test your knowledge of your own science. You also won't be expected to come in ready to do their research. You're expected to show interest and inte
