  3. For folks stressing about whether to reach out post-interview- As a faculty member, I usually appreciate knowing who is still interested and eager to hear from us! Sometimes folks who we waitlisted are actually planning to accept elsewhere and don't necessarily notify us, so I actually think it has the potential to benefit you if you indicate that you are very interested and are hoping to hear positive news. Obviously give them until a little bit past when they said they might notify you, but don't worry about seeming TOO interested in a program. If it's going to be a no it will be a no, but i

  4. Hello! I've received quite a few private messages asking questions about my experiences, probably because I was active on last year's forum. I thought I would throw some of my thoughts and answers up here rather than reply to every message. I applied to U of T, Guelph, and UVic last year, all for counselling. I got accepted to U of T only and am now attending that program. As far as I know, U of T was objectively more competitive and so I think this is a good lesson on how unpredictable acceptances are. At the time, I thought I had the best chance at UVic. Not only are different schools l

  6. NYU update - They told us (approx 35) today at the NYU PhD Interview day event that we were the short-list for the program. Sharing the info in case others are waiting to hear from NYU and weren't at the interview day. I've really appreciated the updates on here, even if they weren't going the way I had hoped. Definitely prefer getting updates more in real time than the radio silence. Crossing all my fingers and toes for you all!!

  7. Hi everyone! Some updates from me: Rejected: Harvard PHS Interviewed and pending response: BU Epi Offer of Admission: Brown HSR, JHU Epi, UNC Epi, University of Pittsburgh Epi I am still in shock that I have been admitted to 4 amazing programs! This is my second time applying. I didn't get into any schools last cycle. I say this to encourage y'all to not give up. I started my application very early this cycle, got a couple publications in, networked with POIs, and spent A LOT of time on my personal statement! Wish you all the best of luck.

  8. Another non-MFA acceptance from me! 🙂 I got into University of Central Florida's computer science doctoral program. It is not as "prestigious" as a program as UW Madison, but DAMN AM I SICK OF BEING COLD THIS WINTER STORM SUCKS. Not to mention one of my best friends is in the same department!! Plus, UCF might offer me a fellowship, whereas UW Madison offered a TA-ship. Turns out a fellowship would mean full funding WITHOUT being a TA! Still no word from any MFA programs, though, and that's what I truly want... I was so bummed about Vanderbilt I went on a makeup shopping spree I shouldn't

  9. Today at around 5pm I received a reply from Cornell's DGS. He wrote "we expect to conclude our admissions process this week. Notifications will be sent out to applicants shortly thereafter." ...I guess it's no longer by the end of Feb or beginning of March. It's THIS WEEK! I know a lot of us here have applied to Cornell thanks to its GRE waiver and the program's reputation. My cycle is almost done, with one fully funded offer, one rejection, and two more to hear back from. Hang in there everyone!

    2021 Applicants Forum

Hi all! Was nervously lurking, but figured I should at least join in to commiserate. Received an email from University of Idaho (CNF concentration) today saying I'm high on waitlist & to schedule a call to chat about the program. Overjoyed to be waitlisted honestly-- I'm a first time applicant and was expecting to be wholesale rejected this year. Wondering if FSU has already notified people? I saw via results that they'd called Creative Writing PhDs but didn't see about MFAs, but someone earlier mentioned they figured they were already out of the running since they hadn't heard?

  11. I really tip my hat to everyone on this forum. :') This is possibly the worst application cycle to apply, and the academy can be so cutthroat and merciless, but you all seem like such lovely humans. Sorry for the sappiness, but the ivory tower could use more people like you all.

  13. Hi guys! Long time thread stalker, first time poster. I just applied for my first time and starting to realize how unlikely it is I'll get in so I wanted to join in the misery hahaha. I applied to a few but U of Michigan is no doubt the most important one to me. Based on when they've notified in the past, it should be next week. Anyway just saying hi and looking forward to advice on how to apply better next year once I'm done crying about this cycle. BUT love the community of fellow wannabe writers nerding out about writer things :)

I was waitlisted at Marquette after an interview so I feel like the "good fit" thing definitely takes precedence, especially this year maybe. Worst case scenario I get to tell my future grandchildren that I had a phd interview with a top theologian while sitting in a storage closet on Zoom haha

  17. A gentle reminder that this is the rejection thread. Admissions are, and always have been, a chaotic shot in the dark for everyone applying with a ton of variables including arbitrary ones like who read the sample, who remembered to show up to the faculty meeting, who is on the admissions committee, etc. in addition to the application itself. Folks are invited and encouraged to take a look at the conversations from years past on this matter and to take the conversation either to DMs or the venting thread. This isn't the place for it. L

Hey all! Lurker on this thread for the last few days as my impatience grows. I received my first rejection from Northwestern last week but haven't received any info from my other programs. I applied to UCIrvine, UCDavis, Mills, UMich, Brown, Boston U, and CCA San Fransisco (poetry focus). Anyone receive any word from any of the schools above? I'm 24 and a first time applicant who is on month 11 of unemployment so the grad school app/job app anxiety has definitely been getting to me a little more this week. It's been a long year for all of us, I'm sure. My partner and I have both been

  19. not a conspiracy theory: this is all 100% true. many programs are allowing people to defer and take another funded year or otherwise are having funding lines suspended by their universities as part of a general budget crunch. this is happening all across the arts and humanities, even at schools with enormous and very stable endowments (Yale is only taking 3 English PhDs this year, just as one example). dark times, and ripple effects will be felt for years

    2021 Rejection Thread

How is it elitist to accept the same people? These people have obviously worked hard and have put together superior writing samples and application packages more generally. I get it, you're disappointed. But you can't go around blaming others. Edit: It's also not like any programs know which applicants the other programs will be accepting. As far as they know, they're accepting the strongest candidates for their department.

  26. My conspiracy theory is that many programs allowed students to defer for the first time in 2020 due to covid and classes not meeting in person. So in addition to an influx of applicants due to trends around people applying to grad school when the economy is tanking, plus all the leisure time many people had for applications due to being out of work, we are also up against admitted students from 2020 who may have chosen to defer.

Also, I wish these programs could tell us WHY we were rejected. Was my GPA too low? Were my GRE scores just not good enough? Was my SOP terrible? They always say its the "fit" and maybe they are right, but the "fit" isn't the only reason why they would accept people so it can't be the only reason they reject others. Also what do they mean by "fit"? Because when I was going through the profiles, CVs, and research works of the faculties I want to work with, I was confident that I would be a great student for those faculties. I want to know these reasons so I know which programs to reapply next y

  33. I worked in a church for ten years before starting this degree, and I would be plenty happy to go back to church work if academia doesn’t work out. My wife and I made a deal when I started my second masters degree that if I got into a PhD, we’d go there, but if not, we’d move somewhere and stay for several years. She doesn’t want to move again this summer and then move yet again next summer. Which is totally fair. Especially since we have two kids also. So this is kinda my shot. Turned out to be the worst possible year to be taking my shot but, such is life. I’ve been really happy with t

  34. Y'ALLL!!!! These sociology admissions committees woke up today and chose....VIOLENCE 😭😭. I'm laughing but I'm crying on the inside. I hope people in the thread are holding on to hope in the midst of mass rejections. This is tough, but we are tougher. And I promise I'm not always this hunky dory happy and optimistic lol. I'm not detached from reality. I actually woke up this morning in a very weird emotional state. Tears, questions and all. But I feel compelled to hope against hope because I truly believe that things work out exactly as they need to in the end. So I'm signing off for the day, b

To add onto @mashatheicebear, There are several "top" programs that don't have certain subfields. It would be rather difficult to pursue a subfield if it isn't something the university currently has. If accepted, you'll be able to do your own research on it but not having someone to guide you through that process is going to make you not feel as supported by the department. It'll also likely make the job application process more difficult. I don't think there is any wrong answer to this. I think one of the best things you can do is figure out what your goals are. If your ultimate goal is

  37. I haven't received any communication from Hopkins, but don't plan to for a while. This is what's offered on the admission website: Review of applications: December through February; interviews are conducted on an ad hoc basis--not receiving a request for an interview is not indicative of an admissions decision and vice versa. Communication of offers: Early March

    2021 Cycle

I'll forward you what I told a user in a dm. Feel free to message me for further details and specific questions. Happy to help. This is for everyone to see: I think my experience of the MAPSS program was overall positive. I think we have to approach those forums online regarding the program with a grain of salt. The reality is much more mixed. It is a good program if you know right off the bat that you'd apply to a PhD program soon after. Their numbers (90% PhD placement rate), while impressive, can be misleading. Those numbers only apply to students who they deem to be "competitive enou

    2021 Cycle

So I've also been feeling this way this past week. I spent so much time (like we all did) researching programs to find the good fits (academic and culture), focused in on faculty, extra-curriculars/cool programs/centers, current grad students and then some to figure out where the best fits were. My one mentor/letter writer affirmed my program list too. In the end, it's just a shot in the dark I feel like: the POI maybe can't take me on or weren't as inspired by my topic/interest, maybe because I didn't submit GRE (even though it was optional) they didn't want to run the risk, or I don't have a
