  1. Got my results early this afternoon - offered CGS-D! I'm beyond grateful, literally sobbing right now. My application number starts with 574 and I was in Geosciences (168). Bit about me: A+ average in both PhD and MSc, ~3.7GPA in undergrad. Applied in my second year (didn't have time to apply first year). I've never received NSERC before but did get QEII this year I've got about 8 combined years of experience as a TA, tutor, research assistant, or field researcher. Three published journal articles, one first author and two second author Two first author artic

  2. Hi Everyone, It was also my first time applying. I received a CGS with a score of 17.49. I have no idea what committee my application was in, but I study diasporas. I'll be starting my PhD in the Fall. As I wrote in a previous post, just to put things in perspective for everyone, my partner applied for a Marie Currie Post Doc this year and was in the bottom 50% of the selection committee, but for a Canadian SSHRC PostDoc was number 4 out of 120 for the committee. It was a very similar proposal, so the takeaway was: sometimes what you're doing gels with the readers and sometime

  3. Just heard today - have been awarded a Doctoral Fellowship - 4th time applying - philosophy (+history, dead languages etc) committee, whatever number that is - score was 16.44 - have no publications but a small handful of conferences (5 or 6)- was a more or less identical application to last year's but with one change of referee and an updated biblio - last year's was awarded 12.5 - Am absolutely gobsmacked I had been told that the more often you apply the less likely you will be to succeed with SSHRC - Had totally lost hope and only reapplied this year because I really really needed to find

  5. I second this!!. All research is meaningful and impactful. In competitions like this, it can solely come down to who reads your application and whether or not it strikes their fancy, and how their day has gone. These competitions reveal nothing about a person's character, success or failure as a researcher. At this level of academia, we all are winners, and are all conducting research to better the lives of others. Whether you have received an award, or not, take the time to congratulate your self for 1) making it to this level of adjudication and 2) being so passionate about a topic to seek f

  7. I applied last year for PGS-D, but did not win. I ended up getting a standard letter that stated I did not win, as well as PDF with the results. The results PDF had a table based on the scores received multiplied by the weight of the section for the weighted value in the "Research and Potential" and "Relevant Experience" sections. Then it listed what rank you got out of the total number of applicants for that year. I've included a screenshot of the table from last year (obviously results are removed because no one needs to see how poorly I did last year). Hope this helps provide some clar

  8. Hey guys ! A big and honest congrats to everybody who got funded, it IS deserved and I hope you will celebrate :). I got a 14.46/20, committee 3, and didn't get funded. If you are curious : I have 3 published scientific papers and 6 published professional papers, 15+ scientific and professional conferences, 4 TAs and RAs, 7 doctoral grants, I was a semi-finalist for the Trudeau foundation scholarship, I have 7 years of professional experience in my field and have a GPA of 9.4/10. My research also falls under one of the SSHRC priorities. If you ask me : I don't understand ho

  10. Last year I received a rejection with super low score. This year I was successful with no publications and one conference added with a similar application. It truly is a lottery! Not sure what committee number (I think 4? - psychology) but was successful with 15.9.

  13. HI everyone, Not related to admissions but I thought I would post this here since this thread is so popular. Can everyone sign this petition asking Columbia CSSW to use work study to pay for field placements? It takes 10 seconds. Even if you don't attend or are eligible for work study I think it's important because it addresses financial need and the equity issues that are inherent in social work. Also please DM me if you want to make a case to you social work school! I have a list of federal guidelines and evidence backed reasons for any school that received federal work study to make fi

  15. Hi everyone, I’ve been lurking this forum but just wanted to post that I received my acceptance to Columbia tonight! I applied on February 15. So excited but also nervous about paying for tuition. Columbia and USC were the only two programs I applied to. Has anyone else who accepted their Columbia decision applied to their online program? I live in NYC currently but am thinking of moving to LA. Congratulations to everyone!

  16. Hey guys! Just wanted to share I was accepted to Columbia tonight! I applied on February 7th. I'm already close to comitting to UNC Chapel Hill which is tied with Columbia as the #3 best MSW program in the country. I am also from North Carolina so it would be WAY more affordable than Columbia. Unless they send me a great financial package, I'm going to decline their acceptance. Sucks I do not come from a rich family to afford the ivy lifestyle. Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear back! Also, don't forget- everything happens for a reason, and trust within the process. success is com

  17. Hi everyone! I've been following this thread religiously, and it's been such a huge help during this waiting game! I'm one of the lucky ones this year, I got a CGS-D with a score of 18.89. Last year I was rejected with an only slightly different application with a score of 11.5 though... it just goes to show how much luck goes into these decisions. Congratulations to everyone who was successful this year, and if you weren't, try not to give up! My experience has told me it's completely random, which is awful considering the application and waiting game is so painful.

No idea what to make of the score without any kind of breakdown, but it's higher than what I expected for not having much at all published! For anyone (like me) who wasn't sure what committee they were in, check here: https://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/apply-demande/background-renseignements/doctoral_committees-comites_doctorat-eng.aspx While it's tough right now, I'd also like to remind everyone of the below:

  23. Never posted before. Thought I'd share my results. Rejected with a 15.8 committee 1. 3 Publications, 2 forthcoming at time of app. First time application second year PHD. A lot of this seems fairly arbitrary. I believe someone earlier in this thread was in the same committee as me with a lower score. Must have something to do with the number of grants available per institution ? That's my theory. Seems like certain demographic-diversity factors also play into the selection process. IE along the lines of gender, race, age, etc... Would be nice if SSHRC just distributed grants

    DAAD Scholarship 2021-2022

As far as I know, people who had interviews had them in the beginning of April - the latest. And they had their status as "pre-selection made". So I guess it is alright for you. The Western-Southern section/bureau doesn't ask for interviews, from the comments I've seen. So "selection made" means that your results will come soon. Hopefully for everybody still waiting we can hear some good news in the next days! 🤗

  28. Congratulations to all those who received, and solidarity and hugs to those who didn't. Reviewing this thread has made me feel so much better about my lack of success this round. Wanting to share my app in depth for those also seeking to make sense of how arbitrary this all seems to be. I am a current MA student who applied through my institution where it was indicated I was in the 2% of top applicants (department members and institutional reps who help us review were convinced I would receive based on my application). I was applying for 1st Year PhD starting this fall (already accepted wit

I planned on applying for Fall 2022, but part of me wants to wait a few years to see what other schools start programs and who gets accredited. I'd like a few more affordable options too. The return on investment just isn't there for me to spend $50000+ on the degree.

  35. WOOOOOT I got a CGS-D! Scored 17.04 in committee 2. In case anyone is interested in details: I am a direct applicant not currently enrolled in a program and have been out of the academic world for a few years (graduated from my MA program in 2018). I have one non-peer-reviewed publication and a few conferences, none of which are related to my proposed program of study. I think I was successful largely due to really strong recommendation letters, good grades (4.3 undergrad GPA, 4.0 MA), and a strong program of study (plus I had a SSHRC for my MA -- not sure if that actually helps).

  36. Congrats to you too! I heard that when this happened in previous years, they will eventually find out and send an email asking us to choose between two options, either switching to a Canadian university or opting for the SSHRC doctoral fellowship instead. I emailed them to make sure anyways, but I don't think they'll withdraw the awards

I thought it was the difference between committee, but I've just received an offer for the SSHRC doctoral fellowship with a score of 15.64 on committee 3 (in urban planning). It was also my 3rd time applying! For those wondering about my studies or you're on this forum in a year from now, you can checkout my website which has some details+CV. Feel free to contact me with any questions. The wait is hard. The multiple rejections are hard. This is an arbitrary funding game without the fun. All you can do is hope for the best and k

  49. Given that no other departments seem to have results at this time (based on this thread anyway), I wonder if she just misspoke? Like maybe she was thinking you didn't have SSHRC for this current year of your program, not that you were not selected for funding for the next academic year. I would directly ask her just to put your mind at ease (but then again, I've always had pretty informal and relatively close relationships with my supervisors/mentors so I get it if you're not comfortable straight up asking). You could, alternatively, bring it up indirectly under the guise of someth
