selecttext got a reaction from ShortLong in Am I the only one who can't help but feeling a bit resentful?
if a department keeps you waiting and you have other offers, you should contact the poi or associate chair to inquire on your status as you already have some offers. if they want you, they will probably expedite the process.

selecttext got a reaction from RandiZ in Take out loan? or reapply next year? advice?
if they are going to fund you next year than you can defer your admission or you could ask if you could start taking classes this year on a part time basis while you work full time.

ask yourself if you really think that applying next year will make a difference. next time you should research funding packages before applying - most departments have minimum guarantees on their websites. you should also ask your POI or graduate secretary what you can expect.

selecttext got a reaction from rising_star in PI bringing me down to visit and telling other students I'm waitlisted.
man most people won't care what your status was or how you got in. once you all get drunk as a skunk together it will all be well. PIs often accept students whom they come to hate. being a first choice or a waitlist matters not. The person had to use an objective criteria for making a decision - not making the cut says nothing about you. hell, it could have simply been first come first serve.

you most likely won't hear back until mid-march or even mid-april.

given your lack of success the previous 2 times, i'm surprised that your referees were willing to write letters for you this time without giving you specific feedback on your application. did you even ask? i also wonder whether or not they are writing good letters. If you don't get in this time, I suggest you take as many graduate level courses as possible before reapplying and possibly volunteer as an RA some place. There must be something seriously wrong with your application or qualifications if you can't get in 3 years in a row. Your referees could be the problem and you should make an appointment to discuss your app with them ASAP. Many universities, particularly in Canada, are still taking applications. If you can identify the weakness in your application, it is not too late to apply to more places. If your dream is graduate school, forget your top choices.

rank is one of those superficial metrics that professors latch onto even as they build their own careers at low rank universities. the most important thing is to publish frequently in good journals. if your potential supervisor is very active, the ranking of the school doesn't make a huge difference at the graduate level. it is also important to consider how well known and connected your supervisor is because in many instances, a letter of introduction or referee report will be more important than the name of your school.

Wow. I hope your arrogance came across to the various admissions committee. Why don't you just withdraw your application now to save everyone some trouble. I hope you keep these opinions to yourself. Actually, why don't you e-mail your concerns to the various faculty members at Penn State so they can have a good laugh over lunch.

selecttext got a reaction from wabisabi in I need serious help...I feel like this is no longer normal grad school anxiety?
just be glad that you don't have to wait for acceptance letters while also writing a master's thesis that is already late

selecttext got a reaction from Knox in If I cancel my interview, will I still be reimbursed for airfare?
I would be embarrassed to attempt this. You should go to the interview, if only to network. You will probably encounter this professor or his graduate students at conferences and you will have already cleared the hurdle of introductions. Get used to traveling and meeting new people - it's part of your new job description.

MSW11, I am waiting for notifications like everyone else. With all the expression of panic, terror and suicidal thoughts, it is completely reasonable to suggest that people stop getting so worked about not hearing back when it is only the middle of February.

the whole notion of pride for one's university is completely foreign and silly to me.

That is very unlikely. Academic types at a conference are hardly so reactionary. It is still a top school known for research excellence. Their faculty and students are certainly not pariahs at a conference. And certainly their colleagues do not assume that they are somehow implicated in a pedophilia cover up.
