If you're willing to live in Upper Arlington, try Fox and Hounds. I got an apartment with them pretty easily as an out-of-tower and plenty of dog owners there.

Yes, EdD is not funded as often. Sometimes your school/district will pay for it.
A PhD is a research degree. If you just want to work in education, not academia or research an EdD will be fine for you.

Hi, school psych doc student here with similar research interests. My rankings would be:
    1. UM
    2. UConn
    3. Rhode Island
Not sure why you are getting a PhD if you just want to work in schools!

I would decide between the 2 offers you have, decline the second choice, but hold onto the offer you will accept if not taken off the waitist at U of M. Then, call U of M and inquire about your status and let them know you have other offers but they are your #1 and see if they will let you know how likely it will be that you will come off the waitist. No one can make you decide before April 15 but it is courteous to let the schools know by the deadline they suggested if you know so they can give more offers and funding to students who are still waiting.

As someone who is organizing an interview day, I say DECLINE!!! Finding willing hosts is such a pain, and if you're local just go home! Save those precious spots for those who need it. Definitely go to the social event, but skip the actual overnight.

I don't think the interview has anything to do with selectivity. The most prestigious school that accepted me did away with the interview. They said they did not think it was fair to interview only people who had the means to fly out to see the school, and that it biased their selection process so they made all final decisions without any interviews.

I hope this is a troll. No, you can not wear jeans and a t-shirt to an interview and expect good results. Please wear a nice suit or skirt + top. In order to prepare look up sample interview questions and be prepared to discuss why you want to enter your field, attend that program specifically, and what your research interests/goals are.

That is perfectly acceptable behavior. Do not worry in the slightest.

iphi got a reaction from sackofcrap in Career Confusion (School / Educational Psychology Settings)
At the EdS level you can work in public or private schools, or at therapy centers (often that send you into schools).
The problem with working in a hospital is internship. They tell us in our program that hospital is a problem because of the breakdown of hours (so fewer therapy/contact hours) that you will have to supplement, plus these internships are VERY competitive, because they generally go to clinical and other kinds of students, and are rarely given to school psych students. To answer your question, yes, this is for doctoral level students. I think it would be almost impossible to do this with an EdS because you need the right level of experience to even land the job (or internship). An EdS with a clinical doctorate (or even Master's) might be a better route for you.

iphi got a reaction from bicsy in Asking to extend stay at interview school
You can ask, but you want to make sure they don't get the impression you're using their funds to see another program, which they might if you extend. I wouldn't tell them about your relatives either (you don't want them to think you're using them). Instead I would ask if you can depart the next day because you "want to get a feel for the town/city". Make sure to tell them you will cover your own lodging.

iphi got a reaction from teddyrux4u in Is it okay to contact my school?
I interviewed with a program today that told me to let them know ASAP if any other program tried to make me do this. They said it is highly unethical, and that I should have until April 15 to decide. So I would first try contacting Aurora and explain the situation (you are excited about this opportunity, but don't want to make a final decision without hearing back from all schools, your other schools have an April 15 deadline, "isn't that standard?"). If they still insist on the 30 days I would contact the other programs you applied to and let them know the situation.

eteshoe, while I am sure you meant no harm, I was offended by your comment/assumptions. I did not say that I was not an adult or that I NEEDED my parents there... all of which appear to imply that I need someone to hold my hand. I personally think it is downright rude to have them visit and assist in the moving process, then tell them I am busy and they should go entertain themselves in an empty college town when there may have been another option (for them to tag along).

But maybe that was my fault. I thought I was clear when I mentioned guests were allowed, but maybe I should have been clearer. These events are, by no means, payroll, course load, healthcare-type serious events. They are non-mandatory welcome receptions, lunches, dinners, etc. that clearly state guests are allowed (with example listed as "children") and asks for the number of guests.

Thank you everybody who commented, for your input and insight! Now I know not to bring my parents... and to not attend myself as well

Parents at an orientation would be pretty strange. Maybe it would make sense for a more social event, but this is where you should think about graduate school as a job. The orientation I attended was to get payroll information, get us required safety training, show us the basics of how the program is organized, introduce us to various professors, and give us primers to get us prepared to start labwork. It's not a good idea to bring your parents.

You can not do this job -- let alone do it well -- long-distance, plain and simple.

School counseling is under the "Education" board. Honestly I'm not sympathetic toward someone who admits that my career choice is her backup plan.

I second the backpack. It may not look classy, but hauling around a shoulder bag all day really kills my back and shoulders.

Why don't you tell him the truth? That in a few years you will be applying to programs, but you thought it would be easier to have him write a letter for you now since the experience is fresh in his memory. Then ask if he wants to keep a copy saved on his HD until you give him the names of the programs to which you are applying, or if he would like to give you a copy now and have you handle it.
