  1. I totally relate to the original post. I would also like to add that as a first generation college student, I met no one in my cohort or department that were first generation college students. In fact, many had parents that were quite successful (i.e. lawyers, doctors, researchers). Being as my parents never went to college, I didn't feel like I could freely express my problems or issues with my parents because they would not understand. In fact, my parents were not truly supportive of my research pursuits until now and even now I have to defend my future research goals and interests and whether they are worth it. They come from a background where higher education should lead directly to more money, which is not always the case in research. The support whether financial or social/emotional helps a lot.
  2. Hello, I have a graduate school offer that I need to make a decision on. It's at a Canadian university in Winnipeg. The offer is 21000 and no tuition waiver (which I'm finding is common in Canadian universities). I'm very interested in the research and proposed projects in the lab (ecology and evolutionary biology), but I would be the professor's first Ph.D. student. Also, I would need to pay my own airfare to come visit the place. I heard from other students who applied to graduate school is that they got their airfare covered. However, I'm wondering if I could hold out for better and take another year to reapply. Thoughts? Thanks for feedback
  3. I know people are incredibly busy, but I really don't get why it takes so long to send in these canned rejection letters especially since we pay an application fee!
  4. Its a PhD program. They do have "on-hold" applicants which I assume is the same as wait-listed. But decisions are basically made by potential advisors.
  5. Does anyone have advice on what to do after April 15th and there is still no notification? The last update I got was my application was sent to a prospective faculty member for review and was given the recommendation to contact the faculty member. I have contacted this faculty member, but have not heard anything from them. It sounds like my chances are not good, but have not received a rejection. Should I try contacting the faculty member again since its after the 15th? This is super annoying as I sent in the application on December 15th. I cannot wait around forever. Thanks in advance!
  6. Has anyone heard from UW SAFS? They said they are still considering my application.

  8. Does anyone know why OSU fisheries and wildlife has a late application date for their fall admission? How are they able to compete with other schools that want you to accept their offers by April. Thanks! Any help would be appreciated!
