I can't tell - do you want to do research on teaching & learning in higher ed or do you want to learn how to teach in higher ed?  Depending on your answer, that would lead to different programs.

I am interested in doing research on teaching and learning in higher ed...specifically focused on humanities and the social sciences.

  2. Hello all,

So I hold two masters degrees (one in religion, one in history), and a decent amount of teaching experience in higher education. Being a good instructor has always been important to me, and I've unfortunately seen a lot of HORRIBLE teaching at the college and graduate school level.

I am very interested in studying teaching and learning at the collegiate level. There are a million programs out there for studying teaching K-12 teaching, but, from what I've been able to find, hardly anything on teaching in higher education.  What little I have found have been masters degrees focused on creating effective community college teachers, with 18 hours of disciplinary work, along with more hours focused on effective teaching.

So my question is this: am I simply missing these programs, or are there really no programs at all that focus on college level teaching and learning? I should probably also say I'm totally uninterested in Higher Ed leadership studies...I want to focus on the best practices of teaching in higher ed.

So I'm facing a conundrum that I'm hoping you all can help me with. I've received several offers from a few places. One place, school A, is a powerhouse in my chosen historical field, and another isn't, school B. However, school B has offered a prestigious fellowship that doubles my funding for the first year. But, school A guaranteed 5 years of funding and school B guaranteed 3. I should also say that School A has given me two separate research scholarships that I can choose when I want to use them. They also have a better placement rate.

Any thoughts? I'm torn because of the better money up-front but School A is so great and well known.

A prestigious fellowship is a big deal. I would recommend negotiating with school b. Yes, they offered you a great fellowship, but mention that powerhouse school A is offering you 5 years versus three. If they want you that badly, they should be able to offer you funding for a longer period of time.

The school I'm accepting typically only offers 3-4 years of funding, but offered me 5 with a fellowship. If they had only offered me 3, it would have been a problem. But if they are offering you a fellowship, then they REALLY want you. And since you've got better funding offers, they will probably work to get you if you give them the chance.

  4. I went the route that xpathos suggested, and they quickly shot back that they used to do that alot more, but don't any longer.  I still took the offer....and then i came back the next year with great grades, lots of research, conference presentations, etc., and asked for more, and they gave it to me...so, something to consider.

I was able to switch my PhD application at Vanderbilt to the MA through the department of religion, so hopefully that will pan out. Hopefully the MA will give me that little boost I need for next round.

Having done the MTS at Vandy, I can say that most people who get accepted to the MA end up accepted into the PhD there.

You know, I worked quite a lot figuring out what schools I should apply to and polishing my application materials. However, I never expected how much number crunching is required after one is accepted. It's a fair bit of logistical planning.

I hope you hear something! :) Is Oregon where you're currently attending?

I graduated with the MTS last year, and am adjuncting this year, teaching environnental history and other courses where I can integrate US History and political theology. I'm living back in Oregon, though, so it would be nice to stay.

Congrats, Josh!  I've been waitlisted at Tennessee for funding, and I have no idea how far down the waitlist I am.

Anyone on here get the funding offer from the UT Knoxville medieval cohort?

Thanks! I hope you get the funding that you need!

I got funding at OU. (Yay!) For up to five years. (Yay!) And it's for a graduate assistant, not a teaching assistant (which has its pluses and minuses).

Well I guess I have a decision to make now.

Congrats! I almost applied to UO for their environmental/history of west program.

    Wow, congratulations!!!  ?

I also struggled to act semi-normally in front of my tenth-grade English class after I heard good news from Vanderbilt.

Thanks! Are you going to Vandy? I was an MTS student in the Divinity school there. Great place!

  10. Well, I am in TOTAL shock at this moment...

Tenneesee just emailed me to let me know that they've given me the Klein fellowship AND a chancellors fellowship!!!!!!! Full five year funding, when normally they only provide 3-4.

Last year, I applied to seven programs and got zero admits....

I can't even believe it! I gotta calm down before I walk into a class of middle schoolers in half an hour to teach language arts!

  11. Well, I just logged into the University of Tennessee's application website to check my status, since they are taking quite a bit longer than they have in past years to notify. I've been admitted, which is awesome!  However, I've had contact from either my POI or the DGS to let me know this, which seems pretty weird.  Someone else also posted the same thing...

  12. Hey there,

My work isn't military history, per se, but my masters focus and thesis was on religion and war, specifically World War I. I wrote about the war on the homefront, which included actions by military intelligence and federal law enforcement agencies. Peripherally, I am interested in the military history of the American Civil War, but again, homefront issues during the war often interest me more than the battles.

I'll probably be switching my focus to environmental history for the PhD (I applied to four programs for environmental history, two on religion and war), but even then, I would be interested in studying the environmental history of World War I, especially in the United States.

@Josh J. Seriously, they didn't count your degree as a closely related field? I didn't apply because I got the impression that they tended to pull shenanigans, but I remembered this from their website.

"Applicants with a BA only, or an MA in a field other than History, must apply for admission into our MA program.  Applicants who will have completed an MA in History are eligible to apply for our PhD program.  If you will have a completed MA in a closely related field, you may note on your application that you would like to be considered for admission into the PhD program."

If I recall your description of your master's correctly, that's shenanigans indeed. Boo Washington! What a senseless reject!

@knp No, they would not accept the MTS as a closely related field, even though my degree was in American Religious History.  35 out of my 52 hours for the degree were in history, and my thesis was in history....but they wouldn't accept it for fulfilling the MA requirement....very frustrating.

Did you get an official email from DGS or was it from POI? My status hasn't changed and I have not heard a peep from them.

It was the standard form letter from the DGS via email.

  15. Just got my rejection for the MA at the University of Washington. Considering I have a masters in another, related field, from a better school, but they require an MA in History to apply for the PhD (or make you apply to their MA), I'm fairly well annoyed.

Hi - I've been a lurker on this thread for a few weeks now...
I did hear back from Vanderbilt and was accepted into Phd in GDR on 2/12 via phone call.
I was also present for the interviews on 2/8~2/9.   I talked to a few other candidates who had been present and those who got in had also heard back by V-day.

I'm sorry if this is bad news for some folks...

    Congrats hl18. What's your field?
