Rutgers results came out today... Super excited for having been accepted. Do you mind me asking which is your top choice school? Feel free to PM me.

It looks like we are all competing for the hist of photo spot?

Completely off the subject... I find funny (just noticed) that I am "ranked" as Latte here, because I actually drink between 5 to 7 Starbucks lattes per day--it's been like that for the past 12 years.

Don't drive yourself insane, just wait until you get emails.

Yes... Princeton professors, more often than not, let students know via phone or email of their acceptance before official emails arrive--it's a very nice touch. With that being said, most schools do not do that.

---- Can you imagine receiving a call from Hall Foster, out of nowhere, to let you know that he will be glad to have you work with him? I'd probably be: "yeah right...WHATEVER... stop f$#$^%& with me, dude!" and hang up the phone.

Just looking over posts from the past few years on the results board for Princeton, it looks like POIs tend to make contact either via phone or email beforehand to accepted students and then in 2-3 weeks or so, generalized emails are sent out for both acceptances and rejections?

Even though I didn't apply to any PhD programs this year, I can still feel the pain of those Berkeley rejections on the board. Is that some sort of blood-letting ritual? I remember--unfortunately, quite well--how that felt last year. I should add, however, that at least we saw a few acceptances last app season. Where are those blessed few?

Hang in there, my dear friends! Better news will soon arrive. (fingers crossed)

I bought a sweater from my top choice school and have kept it hidden in my closet; nobody knows (but you guys) that I have it. The day I hear back from the school, I will either wear it if accepted or burn it if not. I keep having dreams about going around--sporting my new outfit, of course--to let everybody know about the A-MA-ZING news. I wish!

I just received my first admission to CWRU's MA program in art history. I don't mean to brag but not a lot of my friends and family understand how stressful this process has been. I'm so excited because this is the first time I've applied to grad school and this was one of my first choices! Still 11 more schools to hear from but I'm relieved to have at least one admission.

I wish all the best to everyone waiting!

Usually the "academic decision has been made" is a clickable link. Does that not work?

Funnily enough, I decided to not keep my family informed about Grad stuff. They got index cards that list where I'm applying to, and I tell them generalities ("I have an interview") but because they live in different cities, I told them I'd tell them all where I'm going when it's all said and done. My recommenders, however, have been very pleased to get my updates, and I see two of them once a week for class anyways. I figure they're not family (who can wait to hear me out over dinner), and also they wrote my letters, so they like hearing about it.

I'm planning on seeing if I can afford to buy my family stickers, mugs, or keychains from the school I choose. (Pending acceptances!)

Pandora decided that I needed to listen to the following by Jewel -- and I thought it was quite fitting after all.

If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we’re all ok
And not to worry because worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I will not be made useless
I won’t be idled with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear

Madison is one of the most LGBT-friendly cities in the midwest (I have family in the midwest). I haven't been there personally, but a quick google search shows a lot of LGBT centers/clubs and that there is also an LGBT center at UW-Madison. Apparently it has a generally high LGBT population. If you're interested, here's a yahoo thread about it: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090321225805AAJvwY1

As for specifically lesbian life there, I'm not certain, but I imagine there will be a decent amount to draw from.

The Queer culture here (home of openly-gay US Senator Tammy Baldwin and Congressman Mark Pocan) is loud and proud. There's out sports leagues, social clubs, you name it.

Did you apply for an MA or PhD? I applied to MA programs at McGill and UToronto so I wonder if it was one of these two...

Many thanks Borden and brazilianbuddy. I'd rather not name the school but it wasn't a Canadian top 3 so I think you can rest easy. I'm waiting to hear back from McGill and UToronto too, btw. Fingers crossed for both of us!

Here's what I think about during this process.

One important thing all of us ought to work really hard to come to terms with is the fact that there are more qualified applicants than spaces. That means some people who have excellent credentials will not be admitted. When that happens, you just try again next year.

The stress of disappointment and the worry about the outcome is based on expectations, based on attachment to that outcome. It may be hard, but it's important to let go of the expectation because it is a decision that is out of your hands, and whatever the result, it doesn't close any doors. It's just one thing, in this moment.

Consider for a moment, the extremely qualified applicant who doesn't get admission this year, spends a year doing a number of other things and applies again. That gap might result in experiences that change the outcome of life for the better. We wish for a certain outcome, become attached to it when it doesn't happen - but who is to say really that one out come is necessarily better in the long term than another?

Patience, long game, big picture - life is huge, this is one thing, one moment, one small year. And if it's what you want to do, you apply again. There are lots of things in life that will require trying more than once, surviving them is a way to learn.

All adcoms must be celebrating Wednesday Worry Day - a special holiday whereby they make us wait when they already know the answer just to gather data on cultural practices of worrying. IRB approved, I'm sure.

This slow trickle of acceptances on the results board is driving me absolutely crazy even though none of them are schools I've applied to.
