I've already submitted my application to the Continuum! The location would be really convenient, so fingers crossed.

    Hi,

To be short, I am coming from an engineering background but I want to apply for PhD in biology for top schools. I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences in this regard.
    Thank you in advance!

    Details:

I have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from university of florida with a GPA of 3.93 and master's degree from Georgia Tech with a GPA of 3.5. I have undergraduate research experience as an NSF REU student. I also have 3 semesters of research experience at the Georgia Tech working in nanotechnology area making biosensor devices. This research resulted in one conference paper publication and a workshop publication.

I am planning to take GRE biology subject test to supplement my application as I am not a traditional biology student. Also, I am looking to get into pure biology programs and not bioengineering, biomedical or computational biology sorts of majors.

What are your suggestions for increasing my chances? or What do you think about my chances for getting into top schools?

Thanks a lot for reading this and helping with your answers.

Could you provide us with any off campus residence recommendations preferably for grad students, and low rents? I would really appreciate your help.

Something to consider also: don't go where the faculty are successful at the expense of strung out, stressed out graduate students. UCSF is prestigious primarily based on successful faculty.  While the graduate student may still be successful in a program like that, such an environment is not necessary for success.   Try to find a place where everyone is happy and the graduate students are still successful.  There is a balance, and it sounds to me like UCSD might be the place, much like UTSW for mrmolecularbiology, and UGA for me (only I didn't have the opportunity to turn down UCSF!) (I said success too many times just now)

Maybe you could try and find another grad student from your program/school? Or you could always skype the potential roomie to make sure they're not a total creeper

I'm moving across the country and kind of freaking out about it. I'm not sure whether or not to scout out a roommate online or pay something like $400 more a month to live by myself. How do I even go about finding a roommate? It seems like a big decision to make with someone you've never met.

Someone else said to me, "There is no money in education." Duh! I have spent 13 years in education, I think my bank account and I know that quite well.

Another goodie, "Are you sure you did everything you could on your apps?" I actually considered adding glitter in my FedEx envelope for my transcripts, but hopefully spending almost 6 months preparing for the GRE, 3 months on the statement and obsessing over my apps even AFTER I submitted should be enough. Well, I guess I could have sent a musical card too.
