ChurchLover reacted to highpriestess in Anyone studying for the Language Exam?
I'll add that the way I have been studying is that I have just been checking out history books in French from the library, sitting down with a French-English dictionary, and writing out a translation. For me, I think this has been the best method, mainly because I am fairly solid with grammar, but things like colloquial phrases and idioms are tough. Translating an already history related text has been very helpful and, honestly, at this point we cannot learn an entire language before the exam. For the most part, what's done is done. So it is good to just practice as much as possible and get your head in the game. But we can do it I believe in you guys!!!! (and it is not like they will kick us out if we fail)

Every single thing you guys have said applies to me as well. I'm taking the French language exam in early September, it'll be an hour long but I don't know how long the passage will be or its content. Just wanted to let you know you guys aren't the only ones in this position. I also took a couple years of French in undergrad and I'm comfortable with it, but I really need to cram. I'm thinking of reviewing my old textbooks as well as reading and translating a short novel (Camus' L'etranger, not too complex, I know, but it's a start).
And I wholeheartedly agree that the GRE is ludicrous--it's all a racket for ETS and Kaplan to make tons of money. And now that it's so engrained in the system it probably won't be going away any time soon.
If you guys are interested in what program I'm in, don't hesitate to message me. I'm more than willing to talk. Good luck with your studies!

AnimeBabe420
Do not be discouraged by the opinions of lesser folk. Only we truly understand the delicate and fierce anima artistry fully.
I personally study a related topic (although quite different also because my work is extremely unique). My dissertation is a comparison of the slavery structure in Pokemon and the slavery structure in hentai nonconsensual sex pornography. I argue that the portrayal of hentai female slavery is actually fem-empowering, much in the same way that Pokemon are not truly fulfilled until they are enslaved by the trainers. With proper trainers both are evolved into their highest functionality.
Your Obamacare theories are interesting I will think more about these.

Okay this was an amusing thread until you brought up rape scenes as part of a joke. :/ Really not appropriate.

^ Definitely this. But now I really want to know how the digimon fandom has been impacted by the Obama administration...
EDIT: Just wanted to note that it's definitely not the username that makes people think it's a troll. It's the content of the post (m-ttl pointed out a lot of what makes the post hilarious). I enjoyed the original post, it made me laugh and is almost clever.

ChurchLover reacted to poliscar in MAPH and Art History - a narrative and qualitative description of my personal experience
Someone make an MAPH forum and we can be done with all of this bullshit. It's ironic that you're complaining about "tired evangelization" Papelpicado, because there's been a non-stop MAPH circle-jerk on these forums for months now. It's obnoxious, and more often than not, quite tone-deaf.
As a side-note, it floors me that the following sentence was written by a graduate student; I would have been embarrassed to have written it in high school.
I'd also like to say that "Now I scoff at me" is grammatically incorrect. What you are trying to say is "Now I scoff at myself." Perhaps your atrocious writing played a part in your rejections from PhD programs...

Does anybody know what the deal is with UMass Amherst? I saw there were some acceptances in early February, but nothing since. I need to make a decision pretty soon here..

ChurchLover got a reaction from BuddingScholar in Tufts
Just as an update, I'm about 99% sure I'll be heading to Tufts. Sounds like we'll all end up at some pretty prestigious programs, though. Good luck with Williams, BuddingScholar!

What is UVA doing?! Anybody heard anything new?
They are the last school I'm waiting on before I can make my decision...

Yea really what does soon mean? They've only had the applications since early December!
I'm not really expecting to get in but I haven't seen much posted about them except a couple interviews a while back. I have other offers I just want to hear from everyone so I can make my decision. The waiting at this point is getting so annoying. I don't even care if I get rejected from the last of my schools I just want to know!

ChurchLover reacted to qwer7890 in Advice on what to do after Acceptance?
I would hold off on declining offers until you've *formally* accepted an offer elsewhere. Then yes... totally a good idea to contact your POIs elsewhere.... you can say something to the effect of: "I'm writing to let you know that I've accepted an offer for admission at X school. It was a really tough decision because your program is great is XYZ ways. I look forward to keeping up with your scholarship (note specifics if you know s/he has a book or article forthcoming) and I hope our paths cross in the future..."
it's a small art history world... even smaller when you're talking people in your subfield... so definitely good to keep all doors open.

Not to turn this into a witch hunt but is the person who heard from GWU here? Just wondering how you were notified. It seems to be the first posted admit. I applied but haven't heard anything from them yet.
Congrats though!

Ok so, unfortunately, the whole horrible application process might be over but the real work is just beginning. And I don't know about anyone else, but I have no idea what I'm doing.
So what do you do once you are accepted to a school? I have heard people post about emailing their POIs but what exactly is it you say in such an email? And what if you aren't positive exactly who would be your adviser? And how do you approach the whole funding thing or try to get more funding?
So many questions...

Even though I didn't apply to any PhD programs this year, I can still feel the pain of those Berkeley rejections on the board. Is that some sort of blood-letting ritual? I remember--unfortunately, quite well--how that felt last year. I should add, however, that at least we saw a few acceptances last app season. Where are those blessed few?
Hang in there, my dear friends! Better news will soon arrive. (fingers crossed)

Yeah, they did some damage today. Hope those folks find better news elsewhere!

Well, anyway! It looks like Berkeley is sending out decisions now. It's kind of vicious watching all those rejections come in. Yikes.
