veritaserum reacted to cupofnimbus in Welcome to the 2013-2014 Cycle
This is what's keeping me from applying to the War Studies PhD at Kings College London--funding isn't there, and I'm not sure my time isn't better spent on doing other things with my application (studying and retaking GRE, etc).
I think taking a little time at this point will be good for all of us. Get this cycle out of the system, even if preparing for the next one. I'm not going to start rewriting my SOP tomorrow, but I can start making connections in the next couple of months with POIs (because that's one thing I didn't do this time, out of concern for their schedule). But for now, take a few days, or a few weeks, clear out your head, and get in the right place so you know what it is going to be right for you

It's for a PhD. I missed the boat on the main chunk of scholarships for Americans though, so I applied for scholarships where there are literally a handful of recipients among all the applicants. So it's a bit of a longshot; the tuition is atrociously expensive and there's no stipend/RA, TAship money so you can't really do it without some kind of funding.

Happy to report that I've been offered a tenure-track position in my parents' basement!

Sorry to hear that things didn't really work out for you guys either! *sort-of-high-five cupofnimbus* If anything though, there will be at least some familiar faces next year then! Although to be honest, as of this moment, I'm not entirely sure whether I should go for round two in the 2014-2015 cycle (which if we think about it, will start in about half a year. Scary thought!), or if it would be beneficial to take an extra year, really think about what I want to do research interest-wise, and (hopefully) improve the strength of my application in the meantime...
Sleeping on it for a couple days might help in terms of getting perspective. And obviously I don't have anything explicit to contribute to the Profiles/SOPs thread, considering that this cycle didn't pan out for me, but maybe I'll note a couple of things I've learned along the way, mistakes made, that sort of thing.
Cambridge would be fantastic, NYCBluenose! Who knows, maybe you will get that scholarship! Is it a Master's or a PhD/DPhil?

I may not remember this correctly, but I think my POI mentioned in the call that official emails will go out tomorrow. So if you didn't get a call, no worries, other profs may handle this differently.

Claiming an MIT acceptance. It was a call from POI. This is my first acceptance, I feel so relieved!

Got a call from Stanford!!!
They were trying to sell me basketball tickets. No joke. All I can say right now is, the man on the other end of the phone has seen happier customers....

New Yorker here, and I've always called it Berkeley. So, yeah, I can confirm this anecdotally.

The previous years' threads in this vein have been super helpful, and since we seem to have hit a bit of a lull in terms of responses and people are ruminating on what could have been done differently, what better time to compile a thread of advice, lessons learned, and things of that sort?
First, to credit all the threads that have come before:
It's indeed a bit early, but the 2012 thread was started on February 13, and RWBG raised a good point about:

All things considered, I really don't know how I would be making it through this cycle without this little support group of ours.

Called MIT and they said they expect decisions will be released "toward the end of February."
Whoever bet the $20 yesterday on decisions this week had better pay up!

Dear DGS,
I am an avid follower of gradcafe and just want to inform you that numerous trolls have already submitted fake "admissions" to your program. The best way to counter this dishonesty would be to provide me my offer in writing today. I do not accept faxes so please send a courier (however, a personal delivery seems more in order).
Anyway, I can accept your offer in advance... but only if you will provide me the additional benefits that a scholar of my caliber deserves: car-service, personal chef and three personal research assistants from your "regular" applicant pool. I will also consider an honorary doctorate and an immediate appointment to a tenured-faculty position. However, as you can imagine, my schedule will only permit me to teach on Tuesday afternoons between 4:00-4:30pm.
Sincerely,
IR Theory Nerd
