  1. I'll be presenting at my first international conference in 7 days. Holy bleep!

  2. I am an alumnus from SMSU '14 with a Bachelors in Political Science (2.91 GPA) and Philosophy (3.1 GPA). I have 157 Verbal, 141 Quant, and 4.0 AW scores. Also, I have a 2.78 undergraduate GPA. What do you think are my chances of admission in MA International Relations at the University of South Dakota, Creighton University, the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and the New School?

I think they rest in your writing sample and in your letters of recommendation.

  4. Trying to decide which date to choose for a GRE retake, Nov 4 or 11. Deadlines are Dec 1. Anyone think it matters?

You should check to see how long it takes for ETS to have test results ready to send out. If it takes three weeks, you probably ought to pick Nov. 4

  5. It's nearly impossible to study at my house. What is it about being mom? Children bring every care they have to mom and completely ignore dad. No matter how busy mom is. #supermom has left the building

I've dealt with this for over a decade. Set boundaries. Set specific times that you will study, go somewhere and close the door, and when they come knocking, tell them that when the door is closed, Mom is doing her work and they are to go see Dad. Then kiss foreheads and shut the door in their face. Spend a few minutes breathing deeply to get over Mom-Panic induced by shutting the door in the child's face and putting Mom-needs ahead of kids. Do not waiver from the boundaries you set (...

  6. How do you get rid of a clingy neighbor who stops by uninvited every day to eat your free food?

Keep your doors locked so they can't just come in. When you open the door, put your body between the door frame and the door so they can't just come in. Share some pleasantries, tell them you've got to go there's stuff to do, thank them for stopping by with a smile, and then back up enough to shut the door.

  7. Quick question! In the SOP, is saying "I may not be good at this but I can do this" be appropriate? Or better off just saying "Im good at this"

    1. danieleWrites

      danieleWrites

The purpose of the SOP is to show the admissions committee why you're the best candidate to offer admissions and funding to. So, should you tell them that you may not be good at it?

I thought love as only true in fairytales

Meant for someone else but not for me

Love was out to get me

      That's the way it seemed

      Disappointment haunted all my dreams

Then I saw her face, now I'm a Belieber...

  9. SOP for grad design school, need to shorten it, please guide me Need to shorten my SOP and please advise if any corrections are required! Need it like today! Statement of Purpose Communicating effectively through words or visuals is art in itself. At graduate school I aim to enhance my already existing skills as well as expand my knowledge and skills in the areas of design I have not had a chance to explore. I aspire to become a successful Graphic Designer, applying my knowledge and...

I can't help you cut your SOP short, but I can tell you that the sentences I can see are sublimely generic. Use specifics, not generalities. My interests in Graphic Design revolve around the use of blue in fake tattoos. Dr. Ed Hardy's work with fake dragon tattoos, along with Dr. Prussian Blue's work in the purpler shades of blue are in line with my interest in research the use of cerulean in fake tattoo unicorns and puppies.

  10. Prof didn't send her letter in to half my schools and is now on vacation without internet. Can't believe it... all that time and $ down the drain.

One of my letter writers sent her LOR in a month late. Find a new writer ASAP and explain the situation to them. Call up the school/program and let them know what the circumstances are. Most of them will need to know the name of the new letter writer so they can verify or use the process or whatever.

  15. got chewed on by some corporate guy in the parking lot for driving in the wrong lane, and carried the lecture to blowing the plant up and leveling the town. I was probably smart to not argue with him....

      danieleWrites

Definitely smart. People who can take someone using the wrong lane all the way to destruction of the town? They're not on good terms with reality.

Some books are cheaper to replace than ship. Some books are cheaper to replace than ship, but have too many useful annotations. I'm former military, married to former military. Moving books: use new boxes not stuff from stores, even if you have to pay for it. Sort books by subject and usefulness. Some books can be stored and shipped over time rather than taken all at once.
