  1. First of all, it is absolutely feasible for you to get into a top institution (master's) in the United States. I graduated with a bachelor degree in a subfield of computer science in 2012 and forwarded to a reputed graduate school. I am very sure I knew less than you now about what is political science when I was 21, but I had interests and faith. So be confident.

Second, it would really make a big difference if you manage to get a master's in a reputed policy school or political science program. To name a few, GTown, JHU, UChicago, UCSD, Duke, NYU. It would also help you discover your real interests and academic focus before you move on, either to a PhD program or to industry.

  2. In comparative politics, I think anything above Democratization would enhance your chance of getting into a good program. But two things: First, you are not expected to even have an R&R on your CV for PhD admissions. In fact, most admitted students at top programs do not have anything close. Second, even with a solid publication, say you are published at CPS or WP, it is still not guaranteed that you are going to be admitted into your dream school. There is no nuclear weapon in admissions.

CPS and WP are nuclear weapons as long as it is a good fit, I should say.

  3. So here it is… the Yale bloodshed… I'm so sorry for those who got bad news. I think now is the perfect time to make fun of Yale… I hope this makes you feel better:

Those Harvard bastards. I would go to Boston to kick their ass right after the Campus Visit Day with my Yale T-shirt!

(just kidding. had an appointment with one of GK's student.)

  4. The New UCSD hier would be perfect for your interests, but NYU is the stronger methods department. I am less interested in developing methods, and much more so in applying them to specific interests, which is why I want good methods training, but don't necessarily want/need NYU's emphasis. With my regional interest, UCSD is a lot stronger than NYU, also in my substantive interest, but I definitely see where you're coming from! Definitely holding out hope for your WLs!

I'm not sure whether I'd choose Michigan or UCSD, if I get into Michigan off the WL...

My hesitation is really not that relevant to academic pursuit. I hesitate given the fact that NYU is in driving distance from New Haven.

    LOL

  5. Nope. I'm assuming my PoI pushing 70, and my wish to do mixed-methods ousted me. It's all good, though, as I would prefer UCSD to NYU anyway, since UCSD is a much better fit! You considering staying another 5 years in SD?

I would be really hesitating between NYU and UCSD, if NYU accept me off the list.

  6. International admits of UCSD: I just received a revised acceptance letter containing more relevant funding information for folks like us. It says that the department awards me with three years of non-resident tuition apart from the stipend. I just followed up by asking whether this policy applies in addition to the funding package (http://ogs.ucsd.edu/academic-affairs/degree-information-procedures/non-resident-tution-for-doctoral-candidates.html). I will share any updates that I get.

    Sounds good!
