A friend of mine who had his MS in CS from Stanford especially highlighted two things. One is the excellent networking opportunities at Stanford; second is the difficulty in getting access to the professors there. Compared to the time when he was an undergrad at CMU, the professors at Stanford are relatively difficult to get in touch with. I imagine Princeton with its smaller department would be more like CMU. Add to the fact that you have to pay to go to Stanford, that seems like a no brainer for me.

As one of the other posts said, if you plan on going into teacher, you really only have one option, US schools. If we're talking about US schools, there is absolutely no reason you would choice UIUC over USC, so you can throw USC out the question.

I've never heard of a graduate student getting paid $50,000/year, so that is an amazing offer. Normally US schools give you generally about the same. I would double check that USC fellowship, very rarely are they up in the $30,000, UNLESS you mean all year around, Fall/Spring/Summer semesters, then this is plausible. California is one of the highest places to live (especially LA, where USC is located) so take that into consideration, I'm not sure how the other schools fairs in terms of expenses and locations, that is important information.

Here's my straight up advice. If your looking to become a professor, you really only have one option UIUC.

However, if this is not your main goal, I think it would real hard to turn down your offer from the school who would be willing to pay you $50,000, especially since you could visit your family often.

    Goodluck

First, you're either ignorant or arrogant to call Michigan a second (or third)-tier school, especially coming from someone who got owned by Arizona State and community college. Michigan is a top program, public or private and you should be proud that you graduated from there.

Yes, there is use trying to distinguish between these three objectively. The current research areas faculty at each of these places are doing could be worlds different; if your research interests don't match up, then collegiality and placement are the least of your worries- you're going to have a hell of a time (in the bad way). If that's the case you might as well be going to a third-rate regional school.

How can you you use that to your advantage? The answer is simple. Ask him how. He surely knows better about this process than the average applicants here.

Just so that you have something to compare with: I'm in Computer Vision, which is sort of AI and I have 1 paper each in ICCV and CVPR, which are the 2 top conferences in my field. Even though I have well above average publication record, I didn't get accepted to all the top 10 universities. This is to serve as a reminder that there are no guarantees when it comes to graduate school application, even when you have a good profile. If I were to be honest, your profile is good but pretty average for top 10 universities. There will be many students that will have similar credential as you. So, my advice is to apply to a wider range of schools. Just remember that there are many institutions outside the top 10 who also conduct excellent research.

Well you've just revealed yourself to be a petulant child who throws temper tantrums when you get advice you don't want to hear in addition to being a petulant child who throws temper tantrums when other people reject your immature and snobby advice. Petulance and a snobby attitude get old fast, so does psychoanalyzing everyone else to justify your own pretensions. Sweetie, do yourself a favor and grow up fast or you'll have a rough road ahead.

I'll respond to the critics, some of whom are generating really fruitful comments on this thread!

    Pamphilia
**I agree you're kind of right here. Your cousin's gawking opinion doesn't matter, but the gawking of the undergrads and their parents does. I have had more than one professor say as much--employing people from these top NAME schools helps the schools REPUTATION and sits better with the parents and undergrads. For this reason, I think that name and reputation are much more inextricably linked than you do. And if we're talking about two people interviewing for jobs, one Ivy and one Top 40, all else equal (ceteris paribus to go along with the curious use of Latin in this informal thread--and I'm getting criticized for the elitism!), I still hold that the person from the better school will get the job. And what about fellowships like Fulbright and so weiter? Just look at who gets these awards--people from the top schools. I'm also not convinced that Ivy students are underprepared for the job market in comparision with others. The programs I spoke with all emphasized teaching and professionalization as much as Berkeley and some of the other schools I interviewed at. Every program I got into gave the same funding package of 2 years fellowship and 3 years teaching. I didn't come across any schools that did not require teaching or other professionalization activities. Princeton (gasp !!!) has this interesting monthly forum in which students and faculty collaborate and strategize on topics of professionalization, the future of the academe, etc. The topic is not outside of the Ivy Tower, but on this forum there seems to be an animosity towards the Ivy League that I'm not sure is warrented.

    Paperchaser and others:

I also just want to make clear: I do not think anyone is stupid for not getting in, or reapplying, thinking about reapplying, whatever! You're not inferior or dumb. I didn't say that. You did.

The question was why keep applying after failing twice? In other words, it's a moment to contemplate reapplying for the THIRD time. A third try seems to me a little too tenacious but now we've generated some conversation and reasoning for it. And I'm not sure I agree with the reponses or the logic behind this position, but we can indeed respectfully agree to disagree.

Somehow the conversation also drifted to a debate on Top program v. non-Top program. I'm still going to hold strong to my position, however "elitist" it may be. I would not go to a program out of the "Top 20." This was totally drilled in my head as an undergrad, so blame it on Berkeley. For me, it's a gamble I would not feel comfortable with, or let's say I'd rather hedge my bets in a very difficult field. This is an online forum. None of us "know" one another, therefore everyone offers general advice. Your case, your friend's case, or any anecdote you want to set forth might be different. Good enough. Don't get angry and start villifying me for asking some questions and expressing an opinion, even if it's an opinion you don't agree with, or you dont like the lack of snowflake sensitivity I write with here! I don't need or want to tiptoe around people's bruised egos on an online forum. A good therapist, would after all, piss you off royally and likely offend you before you started making progress.

As for solutions, I completely agree with the poster who advocated that until you can identify what made your application unsuccessful, don't reapply. This seems like sound advice. More than a few of my applications could have been far strengthened by researching the faculty more than I did. I also really recommend emailing profs and establishing contact. This really helped me at the school I am going to, and it also gives you an idea of the program's ambience based on how people treat you. And to be honest, some of the non-Ivies did not fare as well using this criterion.

I could have said that you do not have facts either, but I never did, because that's a meaningless rebuttal....even if I do give you the list of the schools that e-mailed me regarding my undergrad GPA, how would you check the validity?? If you tell me where you attend school and your program's average accepted GPA/GRE, how do I check it??

You are missing the point. Point is, low undergrad GPA is a huge disadvantage no matter what, and low GRE will keep you out of top schools unless you strive to score as high as you can. Exceptions do exist but that does not speak for the majority.

But I guess you choose to end the discussion with a series of personal attacks, which I have no done so in any of my posts. That is up to you.

Suffice to say your words on objectivity made me giggle but your rants aren't worth responding to at this point. I've got an insanely cute monster to knit. Goodbye thread! Ms. grotesqueidols no it was not Brown. You know that it would be a bad idea for me to provide the list of schools who denied me and e-mailed me regarding my undergrad GPA, yet you still ask for it, you're seriously not in for a fair discussion are you?

I don't know the situation in Cambridge UK since I'm in the State. I don't understand why you want to keep arguing about how "bad" you are with terrible GRE and GPA and you're in a great PhD program. Would that really help people here? It is not a good idea to keep padding people in the back and tell them "you can do it!" while they clearly have problems with GPA or GRE, are you suggesting people to just go ahead and apply with a poor GRE/GPA, and just don't worry about it because you made it in? Any serious applicant would try to put together an excellent package for application and improve wherever they can, and from what I'm hearing from you so far, you're disagreeing with me because I sound discouraging, and now you are disagreeing with me for the sake of disagreeing, this is not a rational thing nor a productive conversation. I don't think I am pushing it too far, since I've accepted that probably not all schools use GRE/GPA as a pre-screen but some definitely do, and now you're just going to bring up all the "diversity" of the student body in Cambridge.

Plus, what is wrong at seeing the numbers? Like I said there are always exceptions, but majority is what we look at and that's why there's a field called statistics. I don't think anyone can disagree on that a low GPA/GRE will only hurt one's application chances, and the only way is to improve it. Ok let's assume there is no place that ever pre-screen by GPA/GRE, would it then be ok for a person to feel good about his or her chances with a poor GRE score, and throw in that 100$ application fee and expect to be admitted?

Ms. grotesqueidol please do not argue for the sake of disagreeing, you are so hung up on the idea of there is NO GRE/GPA pre-screen that everything I say becomes flawed to you even though I am simply being objective and realistic. If my story is a discouraging one, it's not like I wanted it to be, it is the real story of how a low undergrad GPA haunts me for my entire career, don't try to find flaws in my other credentials, try to look at the big picture: are the majority of low undergrad GPA (below 3.0) doing good at applying to top PhD programs? some probably does, but not "majority" for sure, so there is no point arguing this guy or that guy got in here and there with this terrible GPA/GRE, that's misleading, that's just telling people that if they got a bad GRE, dont worry you'll be fine, don't retake it cuz this guy got in here with a terrible score.
