  1. Would you self-cite your own work?

I thought this was common in papers. I rarely read in a paper in my field that doesn't.

  2. I know I should be ecstatic about a 3-day weekend, but part of me is screaming "No! Another 3 days before I could potentially hear something back from admissions..."

What!? Oh man, I didn't even realize I had a 3 day weekend until reading this. I just double checked and you're right! Woohoo!

  3. Anyone else out there with close family members who do not emotionally support - in fact, even adamantly sneer at - your decision to pursue academics? If so, how do you cope? I used to be able to brush off the insults and negative comments, but having to be in close proximity with said family members for the holidays has really brought me down. I'm feeling pretty crappy right now.

I have gotten some snobby comments from family hinting that I am avoiding working. I have also had a number of family members express disagreement with the number of schools I am applying to (10). They said that I am "wasting my time and money and should choose 3-4 schools. I am applying to an average number of schools for my field...

  4. Freaking the flip out. Professor hasn't submitted my letter yet and today's the deadline!!!!!!!!!

Some of my LOR writers wait until last min but they always get it in by the due date. If he knows that it is due today and you reminded him recently enough that you know he remembers then I don't think reminding again will help anything.

Me too! I feel like I still have WAY too much to do, despite constant effort toward it.

  6. November is here. It always gives me the heebie-jeebies... :o

Ive been so focused on NSF that I feel so behind in my applications. Luckily, I took the GRE over the summer but none of my SOPs are done!

  7. Question, as grad students do you look for professors who are "easy" or more challenging to get more "bang for your buck"?

For the classes that are relevant to my interests and research, I go with the professors I learn the most from. I dont mind easy classes though if they are irrelevant to my interests.

  8. Trying to decide which date to choose for a GRE retake, Nov 4 or 11. Deadlines are Dec 1. Anyone think it matters?

I think i would play it safer and choose the 4th

  9. Awful roommates + early morning school obligation = sleep in my office?!

    1. bsharpe269

      bsharpe269

Sorry about the roommates... I totally understand! In college, the wall that my bed was against separated my and my roommate's rooms. She kept the speakers to her stereo against that wall and would blast music until 3am. The room was awkward where that wall was the only one that my bed would fit against. If she wanted to blast music all night then she could have at least put the speakers against a different wall!

  10. How do I get my energy back? I just feel like I want to sleep all the time even on weekends when I can sleep in a little longer. I have 0 energy.

  11. How do I handle a death in the family in week 4 of classes?

    1. bsharpe269

      bsharpe269

Yes, dont hesitate to ask for time off. Professors seem to always be very understanding in these situations. I had an appendectomy only a few weeks into freshman year of college. Different situation of course but the professors were amazingly understanding. I am very sorry for your loss.

  12. starbucks' frappuccino kept me up ALL night last night, more effective than black coffee and caffeine pills.

    1. bsharpe269

      bsharpe269

Sugar + caffeine always affects me way more than caffeine alone. If I need to stay up late, the combo of coffee and sour gummy worms always does the trick.

  13. Would it be crazy if I went to school full-time, worked full-time and held down an instructional assitant position? Cus I'm currently considering it...

  15. Unnatural hair colors: a perk of being a grad student, or a hit to professionalism and credibility?

    1. bsharpe269

      bsharpe269

This might depend on department culture and also how you carry yourself. One girl in my department is covered in tattoos (like arm sleeves) and is incredibly respected

  16. Read an article in the Huffington Post that said as a woman the higher your education level the more likely you are to be single... So bummed.

I'd be interested in whether this is true for men as well. This could likely just be caused people in general putting marriage and relationships on the back burner to focus on education and career.
