  1. Although US News is amusing at best, at what frequency are US News rankings updated for PhD programs? (If the answer is field-dependent, physics)

Physics is also a subject ranked in 2014. Only my question is: when will it be ranked next?

  2. Surprisingly thrilled to relive my application cycle vicariously through the students applying this coming Fall. Good luck to all 2016 applicants!

And I may get to do so through the undergraduates I worked with...

  3. Defending my master's in two weeks, then moving to the US two weeks after to start my PhD. Excited and nervous at the same time for the move!

  7. Who is better placed to advertise a PhD program, a current student or a professor?

    1. Catria

Perhaps this plan is too crazy to be true but it basically means to capitalize on the political context of basic research in Western Europe (and, if Harper is reelected, Quebec as well)...

  8. Would you self-cite your own work?

In a paper, I would, but I would be careful with it in a dissertation

  11. I am worried that my choice of a destination may prove questionable to the people I leave behind at home, even though the program I will attend is still a respectable one for my field

The impression I have: go to any of the following for physics and you may pass it off as normal: Harvard, MIT, Caltech, Cornell, UChicago, Princeton, Berkeley, UCSB, UIUC (for CM), Yale (for HEP-EX), UCLA, Columbia, Michigan, UPenn - other schools have regional reputations (Minnesota, NWU are best known in the Prairies, Washington in AB and BC)

But even the current US government is already an improvement over this dinosaur of a Canadian federal government...

I have one specific grievance: the funding agencies that cut fundamental areas of science in favor of more applied areas

If the best physics departments at home can be compared to US physics departments in the #15-20 range, then one may argue that one may have similar options in my home country compared to where I will go

It's not about the research, but if I don't attend any of the top ~10-15 American physics depts or so, one could think, in the current political context at home, I really am going to an US school for political reasons. However, professors are not among those questioning my move.

  16. One decision left now (which they said will come in "Around April 15th". I guess I will decline admissions to all my admits but one and hope that the last one comes in before the deadline. Kind of scary that decision time is only a few days away.

Accept one offer, and ask for a written release if that decision left to hear from comes after April 15...

  17. What are the odds of going from #29 to #1 on the NSERC CGS alternate list :P

Would you be happy with a PGS (M or D)?

  18. Just committed to Minnesota!

    1. Catria

      Catria

Kapusta said that Minnesota had no trouble getting physics PhD applications from the Prairies (plus Lakehead) but they had trouble recruiting from the other Canadian regions (they usually get 0-1 application from non-Prairie schools and 2-3 from Prairie schools)...

Got rejected from UPenn and losing hope for Columbia; as for the coat, my current school is in a similarly cold area

  20. Why haven't I heard from my last school? (Feeling so frustrated!)

    1. Catria

      Catria

As far as I'm concerned, I know by what date I would hear from Columbia, but UPenn left all remaining applicants in the dark

  21. Looks like my safeties all rejected me...

    1. Catria

      Catria

The weird thing was that my acceptances were sandwiched between rejections (as seen through the lens of USNWR for my field)

  22. Trying to be content with what I have. Should be happy with more acceptances than I expected, but I cannot stop myself from thinking, "should've applied to more higher ranked programs..."

How prestige-dependent is your field anyway?

  24. Now co-advising an undergraduate capstone thesis...

    1. Catria

      Catria

That said, the undergraduate capstone thesis I'm co-advising is a continuation of that undergraduate summer internship; the topic is still related to some theoretical particle cosmology problem I'm also working on.
