astreaux reacted to starofdawn in What were you doing when you got accepted?
So happy to be contributing to this thread. I've read through all the posts here for the past month, hoping I would one day write about my own acceptance; today, it came.
I was sitting in a boring meeting at work - when an email came through. It didn't excite me, since I completed my FAFSA application a few days ago and was receiving many emails from schools about financial aid that were unrelated to my admission decision. However, this particular email had the subject line containing the word "Congratulations!" It could only mean one thing.
Yup. I had been admitted. I did my best to keep my cool throughout the rest of the meeting (no one knows I applied to graduate school), but I feverishly emailed my family and friends to share the good news.
I didn't apply to a single school that I wasn't excited to attend. The fact that I got accepted meant I was going to an institution where I would be proud to call myself an alumna someday. Even if I don't receive another acceptance, I'd be content.
Edit: Grammar. Sorry. Shaky hands.

Guys… don't panic if you haven't heard from Yale yet. Some professors will contact accepted students today, but most profs are just enjoying their weekend/do not read their mails. You'll probably get the official decision very soon!
Congrats to those who have already received their acceptances!

Just receive informal email from Professor Hyde. Yale accepted.

Though not really so much if you're including formal theory. It's a great department, just something to consider.

http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/political-science
FYI: an interactive NRC ranking of political science programs. Breaks down the data in an easy to read way. If you open up the school's individual page, you can go to the tab "outcomes" and see - at the time of the last NRC ranking - approximately how employment breaks down. MIT is 53% academic hires, 26% postdoc (presumably with an academic goal), 9% private sector and 12% government.

I have a couple of friends who are faculty members on adcoms this year, both in fields unrelated to political science. Both have been kind enough to listen to me mindf^k (sorry, there's no polite synonym) why I've gotten into certain programs that seemed beyond my reach, and flatly rejected from programs that seemed like great fits with better odds. The only pattern I could discern is that all of the programs that accepted me were public, and most of the ones that rejected me were private. One of the friends gently smacked me upside the head and said that I was looking for patterns where there were none. He went on to say that "if you could suspend your life and apply again next year with the exact same record, you would get different results." Edit: punctuation.

That comment is what keeping me hopeful... I also would like to think that results for IR and Security Studies for MIT aren't out yet. Just to keep my hope alive.

I don't understand why you guys are calling it paradoxes. All of those are good schools with lots of very qualified applicants. Somewhere you're picked, somewhere you're not; it seems to be an absolutely normal part of the process.
Implying that it's impossible to be rejected from Northwestern (why, because it is a lower ranked school?) after being accepted to MIT doesn't seem right to me.

To the person who was rejected from Stanford and wishes you'd told them you were African-American...
When the sting of the rejection wears off, I hope you feel pretty crappy about that comment. You should feel crappy about it.
Edited for grammar and anger.

There's a Harvard acceptance from March of last year with the comment "Only acceptance of this cycle! Don't lose hope at any time!" When my first few decisions were all rejections, I read that comment over and over.
Sending warm wishes for Yale, MIT, and Chicago MA acceptances your way...

I'm tired of lurking and just want to say that I'm glad I found this forum. Knowing that you are all in the same boat makes this process much more bearable. Seeing this kind of support is a beautiful thing.
