They could do either of the following:

    -Reject you
-Email you asking you to get that LOR in or to find a replacement before they review your application
    -Accept you
-Email you asking you to get that LOR in or to find a replacement before they can offer you admission.

These are some things that happened to me last year.

I'm going to graduate school where it snows and I've lived in an area where it doesn't snow for my entire life. What should I wear during the winter/snow seasons? I'm pretty sure normal sunny California winter clothing doesn't cut it.

I don't think any of my friends are applying to graduate school, but they know the crap I had to deal with last year and this year with my LOR. They're all waiting for me to finally hear from some schools. I don't know if I'll be posting it on facebook though, I may do it after I hear back from all the schools.

joro got a reaction from Strangefox in Note Taking Strategies
I normally just do regular bullet points and write a page number down in case I need to read it over. I have a friend who takes notes in a somewhat interesting way. For example, let's say the thing to copy down was, "The cow jumped over the moon." He would write this down on his paper: "T_e c_w j_mp_d _v_r th_ m__n." He would take out letters and fill them in later. Apparently it helps him remember things.

For those who are panicking about late LORs. You have a ton of time and don't exactly have to have them submitted by the deadline. Schools know that Professors are late with these things, but you should try to get them in by January at least. The schools will bug you for the missing letter when it comes to that time. I didn't have all 3 letters in till mid-February.

I'm going to give my own interpretation on the male species. They prefer not to think their actions out and typically end up in situations which could have been avoided. They prefer to be the successful one among their group/family. I would guess this is how a typical male acts? I think he finds it more as you bragging about your success and probably finds it a bit annoying. He probably was okay with it first, but it could have gone to the point where it seems like you're just telling him how much better you are than him. Just my personal view on things.

From my first choice - *looking at my portfolio* "Why on earth is he applying here? He doesn't even have a solid foundation of skills!!"

From schools I got into last year - "Oh, so now he's reapplying after we accepted him last year? We weren't good enough for you last year and you've decided to use us as your safety school, eh? REJECTED!!!"

From schools I got rejected to from last year - "How many times are we going to have to tell this guy no?"

From new schools I applied to - "A colleague of mine told me about this guy who applied to their school. Let's reject him too!! MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!"

joro reacted to joro in Evaluate chances for top 30 CS PhD schools
I think you have a good shot at a top 20 to 30 school at least. Without any kind of research experience, I'm not too sure you could get into any top 10 school (though I would still give it a shot if I were in your shoes). As an undergrad you could have probably got by without any real research experience, but they usually expect more research experience from those with a MS.

What areas of computer graphics interests you? Some schools are strong in certain areas, but lack in others. You don't want to go to a school that is particularly weaker in your area of interest.

You shouldn't have to make threads in multiple subsections. You will get responses and people generally get annoyed of duplicate threads posted in multiple sections. It's best to keep all replies in just one thread. I tend to ignore duplicate threads.

joro got a reaction from Jae B. in Laptop..techies please help!
Don't worry too much about all the small details unless you're really anal about technology. For the most part, any MBP will be good enough for your daily tasks unless you plan on running power hungry graphics intensive programs such as video games or computer graphics applications then you might experience a bit of a slow down.

The big difference between the 13inch and 15inch:

The 13 inch MBP uses older technology for their CPUs (basically the GHz you're worried about). The 15 inch uses newer technology which will allow you to use more programs without any noticeable slow downs. I don't think you should worry about the CPU in either the 13 or 15 inch.

The 13 inch also uses a slightly less powerful graphics card, but I honestly don't think you'd be able to tell the difference. I would steer clear of the more expensive options for either the 13 or 15 inch. They only offer a bit more powerful CPU and a bigger hard drive, but you really don't need either.

I think either the 13 or 15 inch should work out for you, but it's really how much you want to spend and whether you'd prefer a 13 or 15 inch MBP. You should definitely go to an Apple store and test out the laptops to find out what size screen you'd feel more comfortable with.

joro got a reaction from Jae B. in When to start writing SoP
This is coming from my own experience.

    1. I started writing my SOP the first week of July, then I finished some time in September I think (possibly October). Everything was submitted in November that I'm sure of. It's really up to you on how long you want to spend. I went through many drafts with at least 5 people proofreading the same draft until I arrived at something that everyone thought was great.

    2. I decided to write the entire thing, then whittle it down to what I needed. I found that process to be easy.

    3. Good luck!

    That's pretty much it.

Person A gets all, but the last 10 questions correct.
Person B gets all, but the first 10 questions correct.

Person A will receive a higher score.

    For Linux stuff:

F-spot - photo processing/managing, although mono is a bit slow
vmware player - awesome for... anything, even running OS X for the apple salesmen
irssi - IRC can be useful and this is my favorite client

    All are free.

By the way, the moment people stop saying there is just Mac and "PeeCee" is the moment I think one of my strong urges to choke someone will end. I mean, seriously, PC = personal computer, if your macbook is not a personal computer, what the hell is it?

joro reacted to stefunny in Took Kaplan's Practice GRE...Low Score, Please Help
I took Kaplan's Practice GRE today and got a very low combined score of 950 (V: 430 Q: 520) I'm very surprised by this score because I got a significantly high score on my SATs. I thought maybe Kaplan puts much harder questions on their practice tests so you pay for their tutoring courses. But whatever! I want to attend Georgetown's School of Foreign Service (security studies). I will also be applying to GWU, American and FSU. What are my chances? My GPA is a 3.3, I have interned at the police station for 4 years, the mayor's office for 3 years and I'm currently an intern at the secret service. I have great letters of recommendation and I think I can pull off a pretty good SOP. Has anyone else taken one of these pracice tests and done better on their actual GRE test? Thank you all in advance!!!
