completely disagree with nowaynohow. I make about 21000$ pre-tax and I live in Washington Heights. The trick is to have roommates. look up to my earlier post to see my rough budget breakdown.

no. an 800$ studio in Astoria is probably a cardboard box.

gentlechaos: it sounds sucky but it can be okay. just find someone who works a lot and isn't home very much. Keep your things seperate, treat it as a business transaction. Put the lease in your name and if they drive you absolutely insane, kick them out (but if you do, do it diplomatically. this is a smaller town than you might think and you don't want a reputation). If you get lucky, your roommate might even become your friend. And you absolutely don't have to share a bedroom. Find a cheapish two bed and split it with one person or better yet, a couple. see my post above about cost of living, I broke down my expenses bit by bit, so just scroll up a bit.

anthrogeek & tampopo: scroll up. we've answered all your questions within the last couple pages of this thread.

If you all really want, I can show you a more detailed breakdown of my budget. Actually, that's a good piece of advice. Open Excel (or iWork Numbers) and start a budget spreadsheet right now. Record what you spend on everything month to month (or even week to week, which is what I do because I get paid weekly) and see how much you spend on things. Round everything up (don't round down. NEVER ROUND DOWN) within 1$ (or 1 lb). Thus when you get here you will already have a good idea of your spending habits and how you need to modify them to live here without breaking the bank. Don't panic, just plan.

As a mixed-race person, I find this offensive. Skin color and ethnicity are not the same thing. Don't assume you know someone's race by looking at them. I have a good friend who is half Mexican, raised in a culturally Mexican household, speaks Spanish fluently and looks like a brunette white girl. Cultural appropriation is one thing if you know that's what's going on, but don't presume to judge people you don't know.

    Bump.

I got into the NYU MA and since the program is only one year I'm considering PhD programs again. My geographical window opened up so I'm going for broke! What programs will people be considering?

if no one responds, I'll bump this again in a month or two.

It is very field dependent I guess. I didn't contact professors and have 6 interviews and 1 acceptance so far. My current PI told me to avoid emailing because it annoys professors. I followed the advice it worked well for me.

just gonna throw this out there: if the school is having this much trouble selecting out of what should be a managable size applicant pool, you kind of have to wonder what *other* things they might have trouble with and whether you want to end up at that sort of school.

Has anyone heard from USC Annenberg's M.A./M.S. programs? I applied well before the deadline, and they told me it would be a 6-8 week turnaround. I'm approaching Week 7 and the anxiety is only getting worse!

PS. Congrats to all of the PhD admits at USC! Hope to see ya there

Thank you both!  I realize it is promising that it was a personal response and maybe a blessing in disguise?  The MA might make the difference -- we'll see.  I still have five other apps out there, fingers crossed!

Make sure you know your OWN research inside and out. In all the conversations I've had with POIs, they are never as interested in what I had to say about their work as I'd prepped for. They want to get to know you. Be prepared to talk about fit with the program.

I know you already have one MA, but I am convinced my MA made all the difference. Without it, I was soundly rejected, with it, I was accepted to my top choice. It really does give you a chance to dip your toes into the field and it also shows the ad comm that you're serious and willing to work hard and do whatever it takes.

It sure sounds genuine to me. There are so many programs that don't even take the time to have a personalized response to application (or even respond!). I would tend to believe them if they said "great asset" - that's not a phrase you hear often.

Could you email a POI there or even ask to have a quick Skype conversation to ask a question about the MA coursework? This might give you another chance to gauge their genuineness.

It was hilarious... I was juuuuust trying to deal with the transcript issue I discovered to be systemic (meaning it affected all three of my applications), thinking "dang, maybe that's why they aren't notifying me yet..." and grumbling to myself when my phone rang.

I picked it up and there was silence. I was like "Hello? ...Hello??? Hello?!" and the line dropped... I just about lost it...
Went to dial the number back and then it popped up ringing on my phone again.
I could tell immediately from his tone of voice that it was going to be good news.

Then I jumped and pranced around the house like a caffeinated pony while sounding calmly gleeful on the phone (so I believe), and sent myself into a coughing fit (got the bronchitis right now..) from exerting myself so hard on my prances.

My stepson said to my partner, "I think this means she's officially wanted in three states." That kid.

I was simply being a bit cheeky - no need to call me ignorant (or resort to name-calling at all). I would never email such a thing to a professional.

Let us not forget, however, that many of us have taken on rather substantial loans and as such, cannot necessarily afford to attend conferences that they may potentially benefit from. As a (recent) independent scholar, there is usually not much available in terms of aid. Regardless, my comment may have been insensitive, to which I apologize for. I fully acknowledge the plight of internationals, and wholly support any and all systems in place that may aid them.

Unfortunately, I just finished my Masters a few months back, so no go @ institutional funding. I guess I'll have to inquire with the organizing committee as to options geared towards the impoverished international. Not every American is rolling in the dough !

There's a logical issue in your assertion. You're suggesting that what we read as Shakespeare "is a complete fabrication" (which is an absurd statement in itself, as 1.) there's evidence to suggest that the first folio is a compilation of cue scripts, actor's scripts/notes, and perhaps Shakespeare's own notes - and even if it were just a cue script and much of it were (is) fabricated, that does not make it a complete fabrication), which should then divorce it from performance (which is not what good Shakespearean scholarship does) and permit it to be evaluated on its own as a literary piece.

What about later theatre? I don't think anyone would have much trouble placing Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams within their respective literary epochs.

I agree with you that written theatre needs to be evaluated within the context of the playwright's intention for it to be performed, but the idea that we can't consider theatre literature is a bit absurd, no?

The Kings Men wrote/published the first folio. Otherwise all there was were the foul papers which were used to produce the cue scripting.

What you read today as "Shakespeare" in literature is a complete fabrication. No such written thing existed when the plays were performed.. and they were created to be performed. Acting as if the literary analysis divorced from the performance has any validity is just academic masturbation.
