Yup, this. A random guy you went to high school with who carries a vendetta? I'm having trouble taking that piece of work seriously (to be clear: I'm not having trouble taking your concerns seriously -- I'm having trouble taking the guy seriously as any kind of credible source): I'm sure the people at the schools you've applied to, who are all indubitably smarter than I am, will be even less likely to give merit to his potential rants than I am.

Is it only for the wealthy? I'm proof that it isn't. I grew up in housing projects at the best of times - a family of six that made $18,000 a year GROSS. We've struggled with being able to pay for food and shelter our whole lives and even lived in our car for a while. But I did my BA in Classics. Can't get too much more "impractical" than that. Granted, I had to do the whole thing on student loan and now owe $68,000.

I wouldn't change it, though, and I don't think that the way the system is moving toward tangible skills is working. I really think that a Bachelor of Arts degree provides the student with critical thinking ability, which is absolutely necessary to a well-functioning democracy. The problem isn't that the humanities are impractical, it's that college isn't free for everyone who elects to do it. Once it is, and I hope that it will be eventually, the benefits of studying humanities won't be eclipsed by the lack of tangible, employable skills.

Get Modern Theological German: A Reader and Dictionary. It's available on Amazon and probably Alibris. It doesn't have a grammar section, but the dictionary has terms useful for us that aren't in Webster's and such (e.g. "Wolkensaeule"--the cloud pillar in Exodus. You're not gonna find that in most places). The first part of the book contains excerpts from various theological works and the Bible, with questions after each section so you can check your reading comprehension.

    It's great. And paperback.

In regards to applying because of the recession...it's one of my reasons. Before the economy tanked I wanted to get a PhD but now it's more of a motivation than ever. I was unemployed for year after I graduated in '08 and am stuck with a near minimum wage job now (I've got a MA too!). Since 2008 I've been applying to jobs and this dumb receptionist thing I have now has been my only offer.

I want to go to grad school for all the right reasons but also, riding out the economy by living on a hefty stipend (all the schools I applied to give you tuition remissions and stipend)and not having to work at all (or work a little)would be sweet for 4 years! When I get out the economy will more than likely be better (Let's hope), I'll have a new set of academic and life skills and I'll also just be more mature. sure I'll be another new college grad but in my competitive field I feel like there is no use trying to even make an effort getting a job during this recession so not worrying about it and focusing on something else for a while will be nice.

Pf, like art history programs care about that.

I have a 3.0 undergrad GPA from an institution with grade inflation aplenty, including four failed courses (three *in my major*), one D, and a whole bunch of generally mediocre grades, and absolutely no reason for it, except that I was young and stupidly rebellious against things like homework.

johndiligent reacted to johndiligent in so how much did you spend?
I couldn't afford it while I was a student, that's why I took a year off. I tried last year and when it became a question of whether I was going to have a place to live or application fees, I realised that I'd have to wait a year.

For the six schools I've done so far...

    Application fees: $634
Postal fees (Tracked and guaranteed applications, stamps for recs): $92
Transcript fees: $99 (Curse the schools that want two sets!)
Paper, envelopes and ink cartridges: $62
Case file to keep it all organised: $7
Countless hours of effort and worry: my sanity

Getting an acceptance letter in the mail: (hopefully) priceless. Or $894. Depending on how you slice it.
