They haven't announced any waitlisted individuals so far. I feel like there's still some acceptances to go out.

wxyyyz - What years did you attend the BSW at UWaterloo bc I didn't find that to be true at all.  There were 60 people in my program and at least 10 were not white.  There were also a number of openly gay/bi/etc class members.

I felt compelled to address this comment -- I apologize if it is out of place with respect to this thread's subject matter. I'm currently awaiting a response for the UofT 2-year MSW. I was waitlisted last year. Best of luck to everybody.

As for the comment: with all due respect, your logic is absolutely preposterous. For one, psychologists/psychiatrists/etc. apparently do not need to suffer from mental illness(es) themselves to have their professional legitimacy questioned. We need effective clinicians, not clinicians who can merely "identify" with clients. This trend towards oppression-as-currency makes me gag. That professor you described is an anti-oppression expert because he knows more than any putatively "oppressed" people about their oppression. Unlike theory and professional experience, personal experience is not a language that anybody else can understand. A depressed person doesn't necessarily know more about depression than someone who studies it meticulously and who deals with depressed people every day. In fact, depression by its very nature tends to preclude strong self-insight. Granted, though, someone with both personal and professional experience would be more likely to make an incredible clinician, e.g., Marsha Linehan, R. D. Laing.

For the record, I'm a "white boy" who was raised for the latter half of my life, along with my sibling, by a single mom's under-100K salary. Both me and my sibling suffer from chronic autoimmune diseases. Being stifled into voicelessness because I'm a "white boy" merely constitutes a reversal of roles, not an elimination of discrimination. Maybe I should just milk the fact that I'm Jewish in my applications, since Jews are historically the most oppressed minority in the world? Or maybe I should actually show some integrity instead?

If any programs are obligated to fill diversity quotas, something has gone horribly awry.

P.S. Social work is 90% female. Technically, "white boys" are the minority in the field; if anybody should be "benefiting" (*gag*) from this arrangement, it should be white boys. But most men are just too insensitive to want to pursue education in social work, right?

    oh dear -
I am not equating oppression with currency. I am saying that there are barriers for marginalized peoples within the social work profession. This is important when you consider the damage the profession has done and continues to do (overrepresentation of Native and Black kids in child welfare, institutionalization of disabled people) – social workers were and continue to be complicit in this. The key word in social work is SOCIAL, not clinical, or psychological, or medical. If the people from communities impacted by social issues are not adequately represented in the profession and in schools, this means that a lot of important knowledge that could inform clinical practice is being excluded. These issues will also impact your experiences as a grad student as well.

PS while males are underrepresented in social work, take a wild guess about what the gender and colour of those in upper level management are in social work?

I generally dislike getting involved in these conversations on the internet, but I fear I must shake off my hesitation to address this particular comment: “...that professor you described is an anti-oppression expert because he knows more than any putatively "oppressed" people about their oppression...”

I am still reeling from disbelief at your statement, so I apologize in advance for any lack of tact this may induce on my part.

First of all, you cannot be so deluded as to say that a proclaimed expert could know more about an individual’s oppression. I cannot even agree with that as a proposed generalization, so I am hoping that you were being slightly facetious with your perspective. If not - what? Seriously, what? Ever heard of the power of lived experience? Granted, this professor has certain credentials after his name that indicate his cognitive superiority (perhaps) and critical thinking skills (again, perhaps). However, by no means do those credentials discredit an oppressed person’s ability to completely comprehend the systemic and structural barriers that hinder their growth (educated or not; trained or not).

Secondly, I personally know this professor, and I know that a solid potion of his knowledge is derived from the people who experience oppression everyday; essentially, his heightened understanding is achieved through a two-way COLLABORATION over anything else (even meticulous studying).

Lastly, for a group who is considered the “minority” in social work, many of the white boys sure do take up a lot of space in the higher echelons of leadership. The difference, you see, is that your minority status still does not take away your unadulterated source of societal power.

Just a reminder for everyone to update their results when they hear back. It helps this year applicants and future applicants so we don't have to scroll through so many pages to know when people have been accepted , waitlisted or rejected

    Just to continue this conversation,

I wanted to say that 've noticed many times that we who work or learn in social services have a tendancy to run each other down (I'm guilty of this as well). I'm not sure why do it - maybe it's because the profession places us on the precipice of privilege and marginalization, and while we're there it's hard not to take something someone says as a personal invalidation. My own goal is to one day be able to (a la Marshall Rosenberg) have the strength to really hear what someone is saying to me without responding in a way that loses us the opportunity to learn things from each other. Anyway, from this learner to you, I wanted to say that I appreciate what everyone has contributed to this huge thread so far, and I hope that it's still a safe place for everyone to contribute their ideas.

EDIT: thank you B39 for clarifying.

Also, I really don't have the energy to properly contribute to this conversation, but I'm incredibly disappointed in some posters' attitudes towards marginalized folks. I'm disabled. I'm mentally ill. I'm a survivor of multiple forms of violence. I'm bisexual/queer. I've accessed social work services throughout my youth. Trust me when I say that hostility toward efforts to value lived experience as real, valid knowledge will only hurt your clients/patients and your career, if social work is headed in any good direction as a profession.

A number of you PM'd me about my experience so I thought I'd finally make a post about it!

I'm just completing my undergraduate degree now. My average at the time of the application was low B+ (3.3 GPA), and after updating it with my previous semesters marks I got it up to a mid-B+. I think my application strengths were in my experience, references and written statements. A brief summary of some of my experience:

-worked as a youth lead on a national mental health collaborative aiming to reform the youth mental health-care system
-2 years as a phone operator as well as member on the executive board of a crisis line
    - worked in both hospital settings and community health settings with youth transitioning to the adult health-care system (facilitating groups, providing feedback on programs, and creating materials for the youth)
-facilitated a program for chronic health self-management via Sick Kids hospital
    - worked with youth, barrier free, and elderly persons with dementia in a community health centre on various programs as a facilitator
-member of various organizations on campus that aim to empower and advocate for diverse populations
-completed a certificate program where I was able to examine diverse populations from a critical lens
-1 year volunteering in a lab, followed by 1 year as a research assistant in a lab

As a result of some of my bigger projects I was fortunate to be connected with some very strong references in the field, which I am very grateful for. I really hope you can feel confident in your applications by believing in your experience and what you have to offer the program. Stronger aspects of your application can most definitely make up for weaker ones, so if you're worried about how one aspect might really pull you down (as I worried) I would not lose hope! Good luck to you all, I hope I will be meeting you all this coming semester, and I hope that tomorrow brings more acceptances! If you have any more specific questions please feel free to PM me

Just wanted to chime in to say that I've been silently reading here with my fingers crossed as well. I applied to UofT and York's 2-year MSW this year. This is my third (and final!) year applying for MSW programs. I think I need to move on with my life this year if I don't make it

Last year I was wait-listed at UofT so going in I was feeling somewhat optimistic that I might make it this year. Hearing that folks have already heard back makes me really lose hope. I know it's still early but I also know that my odds are now diminished:many of those available seats are now filled.

Best wishes to everyone here. I know how agonizing waiting is! I know it hurts a lot to really want to enter this program, grind away at improving your CV and still not make it. Although it might not be my career path, I feel heartened to know that this generation of social workers are beyond a doubt total all stars!! I know all of you that have gotten in already really deserve to be there!

Does anyone know about the waitlist for York and Ryerson for their advance standing MSW program? I am guessing by now all the spots are full and the waitlist isn't really moving anywhere...

    Hi soapaddict,

I can't comment on all the questions you're raised but I'll answer what I can. U of T is more research based and also has an excellent reputation in training qualified social workers. I'm not sure what the employment stats are for U of T but something to consider is that if grads aren't willing to leave the Toronto area this could impact post-grad employment rates. I've heard that many job offers in Toronto require at least of couple of years of full time social work experience which would make it difficult to find employment in the area immediately after graduation, if this is actually true. (A quick search on a couple of job boards would confirm whether or not this fact I've heard is true).

I don't want to burst your bubble, but if you don't have a lot of volunteer or work experience it will be very difficult to get into Laurier. You need a minimum of the equivalent of 2 years of full time experience in a related field to be a competitive candidate. U of T is a good option for students with little professional experience and strong academic performance. Out of all the 2 year MSW programs, I would wager that U of T is the most forgiving of people coming up short on the number of work hours (at least from what I've heard on this site and through other people who have been accepted and refused). Windsor is a generalist program (they gear their focus on the interests of the incoming class) but it can be a good back up option. One thing good about this program is that they seem to go through a lot of people on the wait list. For this reason, I get the impression that Windsor tends to be a back up plan for a good number of applicants (perhaps because of geographic reasons??). Far more people get called off the wait list at Windsor than Toronto.

Personally, I'd apply to all the programs you are interested in if application fees aren't a problem for you. Better to give it your best shot and see what happens than to wonder what if and not give it a try. But if fees are an issue, I'd wait until you have at least 3000-3500 hours of experience before applying to Laurier because they like to pick students with lots of experience.

smpalesh, I believe you are wrong about York's post degree BSW. I think York has a different credit system than many other universities.

ie: at York a 4 year consists of 120 credits, meaning that the 54 credits would likely take two years.

poppy_msw reacted to smpalesh in Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2014 admissions
I guess it would depend where you go.  The BSW I am in is a post-grad BSW.  So I already did a 4 yr undergrad (in Social Development Studies and Women's Studies) and then the BSW is 1 year (8 classes and a full year practicum).  Now I'll be doing my 1 yr MSW so it is still 2 yrs total.  If you look at the York website it says 54 credits, which is 9 courses.  So yes, you would complete that in 1 year.  IMO it makes more sense to do the BSW and then apply for the advanced standing MSW because you have a much higher shot of getting into the advanced standing MSW, statistically.

I would highly recommend doing the BSW.  I applied to 2 year programs last year as well as the BSW at UW and was rejected to the MSW and accepted to the BSW.   I am currently doing my BSW and I was accepted to UofT Advanced Standing and waitlisted to Laurier (which is actually quite an accomplishment).  There are so many more applicants to 2 year MSW programs and the odds of getting in are so much lower.  With the UofT advanced standing approximately 1 in 3 people get in (approximately 280 applicants and they accept 90 students).  Your odds of getting into any MSW when you already have a BSW are much higher.  JMHO.

    Hi Jaylynn,

There was actually a good piece of advice on this matter at the UofT information session I attended. The admissions office said that if you had a referee that was lagging behind that you could contact them directly and they would re-send the request for the reference. That's kind of a nice way of doing it, because they're getting the reminder but it's not coming directly from you. If you email/phone Angela Umbrello she should be able to help you out !
