That said, it happens in stages. Yesterday, I was bemoaning the fact that I'm no longer a recent graduate (I'm 26), and I'll be older than everyone in my program, and I won't be out of school until I'm 30, and my 401(k) is just sitting there and won't really be growing while I'm going back to school, et cetera. And literally five minutes ago I was Facebook-stalking some people from high school who are now producers and architects and lawyers, and I'm thinking, my parents still buy me groceries?
 
You just filled out your W-4. In three months, you might sign up for health insurance. Then your parents might pay your parking tickets, and you have to hand-make everyone's Christmas gifts that year. And then before you know it, you're hiring your own interns at work, but still eating cereal for dinner because you're lazy.
 
I guess everyone just grows up at different times. And what really is growing up, anyway? What did we expect from adulthood? When I was a kid, I was looking forward to total independence, and the ability to make my own decisions. Currently there are 7 types of ice cream in my freezer. If that's not adulthood, I don't know what is.

I've heard HYPS (to include Stanford) but an Ivy is only the eight schools in the conference, and nothing else. If you say Ivy, it is understood to mean a real Ivy League school. It's called the Ivy League because it is a league, of eight schools - Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Pennsylvania. Anything else is simply an elite school because it's not part of the Ivy league. 
 
It would be downright nonsensical to term Cambridge or Oxford as an "ivy league" because 1.) the Ivy League is 8 American schools and 2.) both were founded prior to the Ivies. Dartmouth is not virtually unknown. It is a well established, highly elite and respected member of the Ivy league. By virtue of being an Ivy, it's well known.
 
But the Ivies don't change in Graduate school, and that's why you'll see people discuss the Ivies and the Top Ten in their field, as well as elite schools/top tier in general.  I would wager to say that all eight of the Ivies *are* an excellent undergraduate education -- certainly they're not playing Tier 1 across the board in sports. However, the Ivies don't necessarily overlap with the best research for graduates in every field. But calling a good school like MIT an Ivy doesn't make it part of the Ivy league. 

Well I'm a virgin, so there's that.

1) ANTIsocial - it doesn't mean introverted; it's the opposite of PROsocial behavior (i.e. positive/beneficial behavior towards others) - e.g., stealing, violence.

2) schizophrenia/schizophrenic - doesn't mean multiple personalities; it is a psychotic disorder (i.e. features symptoms that involve being out of touch with reality - e.g. delusions and hallucinations)

3) bipolar - doesn't mean loving someone one minute and hating them the next (that's characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder); refers to a disorder featuring episodes of mania or hypomania and depression - these are mood episodes (vs. rapidly fluctuating interpersonally-driven emotions)

Have to comment on what astroyogi said...the smell of skunk. I like it too. And I'll bet the are lots of folks with us, but who don't admit it. So lest you think we're just weird, do you want to know why we like it, or why anyone likes or dislikes certain odors?
 
A Brown University psychologist maintains that the human brain is not hard wired for odor preferences or repulsion. She said that these are learned, and she remembers as a young girl that her mother commented on "that pleasant smell," thus it's been pleasing to her ever since. I don't remember what my learned experience was with distant skunk, but I do know that when I smell it my mind drifts to summer days as a child on vacation at our lake, and those were idyllic days. Same for the smell of gasoline. My mind takes me to summer, the boat, or my dad cutting the lawn. 
 
So there ya go. Skunk haters, methinks someone told you that you should hate the scent.

Wooster Square is nice for the most part.  Some areas border Fair Haven, which is one of those areas that you should not live in, so these border areas can get a bit less savory.  However, if you exercise good judgement you shouldn't have any problems.  There are a number of nice markets and coffeeshops in the area, and the Yale Shuttle service runs there now as well, so you'll be able to get in the vicinity of your apartment without too much difficulty.  There are a lot of nice apartments there, with a mix of young professionals, families and graduate students living there.  You'll also be close to the classic pizza places in New Haven.
 
East Rock is typically called the "grad ghetto" of New Haven, but don't mistake the latter portion of the name to imply that it is not a nice place to live, because it is.  There are lots of nice, tree-lined streets, a decent number of nice apartments, and the area overall very safe.  All of the Yale Shuttles run here as well, so getting to and from class is easy.  It tends to be more monolithically graduate student oriented than Wooster Square, but there are still plenty of families and professional living here.  Orange Street is a nice stretch with lots of little shops and small restaurants dotting its length. 
 
In general, these two areas would be the best to stick with.  Westville is a nice area, but it is separated from the main campus a bit, so you'd really need a car to get to and from school.  Many of the other areas, other than that directly abutting downtown proper can be quite variable in their safety, from the downright dangerous to a bit run-down.  Also, as I've posted here before, New Haven is a small, compressed city, which means that very nice areas are directly adjacent to not so nice ones, and so can change in the space of a block or two.  Thus, I would really try to see the place prior to moving in.  Less scrupulous real estate agents will sometimes try to play on the name recognition of areas like East Rock or Wooster Square to get you into a place that is in one of these areas because it technically might be located in the vicinity.  So as a general rule, see the place before you sign, walk around the area a bit, and when you do move in, use common sense (i.e. don't walk home alone at night half in the bag with your iPhone out, holding a bag with your computer, iPad, and wallet with 500 dollars in cash in it).  People get mugged, even in the best areas of New Haven, but by and large they seem to be avoidable situations.

Jumping to a PhD program seems to be difficult even for those who just finished their BA... Maybe the reason why they want you to have the MA is to train you in art historical methodologies prior to the doctoral work?

Getting rejected by your bottom choice program. 

I watch waaaay too much TV. But recent Netflix binges include: Bones, Law & Order (I prefer the original), Chuck, House of Cards, and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. My boyfriend can never remember the name of the last one, so we just call it Old Sheila Solves Obvious Murders. It's so campy, it's hard not to enjoy it.
 
And for DVDs, I plan to be buried with my Arrested Development, Gilmore Girls, and Sex and the City box sets.

I'd agree with the above statements that it isn't necessarily creepy. If the undergrad is a freshman and underage (I was a 17-year-old freshman, it happens) and the TA is 37 then yes, it's creepy and illegal. But otherwise who are we to judge? My mom is 15 years older than my stepdad and they've been married almost 20 years. It works for some people.

I make a point not to fish for money by doing things like this. Sure you may get money, but when it is blatantly obvious that you just want money, people probably will resent you for it. IMO, it's not worth the loss of self-respect, unless you are just completely last dollar broke. Even then, I'd still try to avoid this.

Most people I've told about going back to school are extremely supportive. Even one friend who I figured would tell me it was the absolute wrong decision, actually told me she couldn't be happier for me.
 
I think my loved ones are probably just extremely relieved that I'm switching fields. My educational background is in the arts, and I've spent the last few years in the NY art scene, making about as little money as you assume. They think I'm finally getting serious about getting a "real job."
 
And I am really surprised at a lot of the negative comments most people are receiving! That really sucks. As long as you're making the right decision for yourself!
