FeministLibrarian got a reaction from frege-bombs in Philosophy of Technology PhD programs?
What about the MA program at Virginia Tech? Joseph Pitt works primarily in philosophy of science and technology. I believe Michigan State is also friendly to this sort of research, though perhaps from a more environmental angle.

You might also look at interdisciplinary programs that suit your interests and are housed at institutions with strong philosophy departments. NYU's PhD in Media, Culture, and Communication springs to mind; for ethics and technology (esp. values in design), Helen Nissenbaum is amazing. Science and Technology Studies programs could also potentially be a good fit. Rensselaer has a very good one, though admittedly I don't know anything about the philosophy department there. I think Cornell's STS program is also strong.

One last suggestion: look up authors of the more recent publications cited in the SEP Philosophy of Technology entry. This can be a good way to get the lay of the land, department-wise.

The difference, as I see it, is that you suggested a generalized campaign of calling up programs that had not yet rejected people, in mid-February. That's rather different than suggesting that people who had made their final decisions but were still waiting to hear from UCLA in the final week or so call to ask about their status. For one thing, it's nearly two months further into the process and during the absolute final stage. For another, UCLA has a history of rejecting people at the last possible minute which is far more unreasonable than failing to notify people two months before the deadline.

Yeah, OK. I agree with the last statement. But I don't see why the first statement follows from the last statement.

Here's what I say: For people who would prefer academic philosophy to law, but who have some interest in law (either legal academia or law practice), law is a good back-up plan.

I think the problem you have with my comments above has more to do with my statement to the effect of, law is a good back-up for someone who "could imagine being an lawyer."

Anyway, I think this thread has been informative and addresses the issues surrounding the original poster's questions about the Duke JD-MA path.

EDIT: I should state clearly that I agree with Guillaume's sentiment that too many people in general are going to law school as a back-up plan. That's certainly true. I've been hearing that for years. And if my comments above suggest that law school is a good back-up plan for everyone/anyone/people in general, then my comments are mistaken. That's not what I hoped to communicate!!

A loud, blustery man derailing and dominating a discussion about women in the discipline -- business as usual, I see.

What's the difference between ignoring an offensive comment and tolerating an offensive comment?

I'm holding back here, because this comment angers me.  My suggestion that Iamparem get out of philosophy is not 'mean'.  It's not 'kicking' anyone.  It's completely honest, and it's based on my reading of more than a dozen, lengthy posts that Iamparem has brought to this forum in the last few days.  Please read these posts.  I think my conclusion is completely warranted, and someone needs to speak honestly about Iamparem's situation.  Moreover, Iamparem has "tried everything," apparently.  And if a person believes that she has tried everything, that person needs to hear a candid remark like the one I offered.  At the very least, it's an invitation for that person to assess the situation and ask herself, "Have I *really* tried everything?"  So Murial, your intentions are good.  And I don't want to start an argument with you.  But I really, strongly disagree with your assessment of my comment.

Yes.  Precisely.  A few of you apparently just joined us in this thread, and I don't think you have the proper context to see why some of these replies are completely warranted.

Many of Iamparem's comments are at least insensitive, and even offensive and hateful.  Again, if you read the comments, you will see this.

This post is wildly inappropriate and offensive.
