American Universities are the best in the world. Europe just doesn't compare, because the Unis there tend to be indebted, poorly funded etc. They rely on state funding, and socialism breeds inefficient and shoddy administration. Only Europeans think that their universities are as good as those in America. If you want to study anywhere outside of Europe (Asia, Oceania, North America etc), having a degree from a US uni is much better than one from a European uni. I know that costs are a concern, but once you get a job, you'll pay off your debt and never look back. Its in your long term interests to go all American.

I am in Balliol. Great college, especially for grads because we have a graduate complex where most people live. The MCR is very active.

So far I am only applying to stay in Oxford (with the CS department). I do have some back-ups, but I have not applied there yet to avoid the situation of having to accept one offer before hearing from Oxford.
I don't know what it is like in Cambridge, but I do think that the Oxford course structure makes it rather awkward to apply for PhDs for the next fall. Most applications deadlines were before we had even finished the first term. We had no grades whatsoever yet. On top of that, the course does not end until the end of September so that you will have a late start with your PhD unless you go for a UK uni. Therefore, many students are taking a year out.

I think the important thing to keep in mind is that you would never be admitted if you did not have a very good chance of succeeding in a program. No matter how crappy you feel about yourself, at some point someone has recognised your potential, even if you may not have recognised it yourself.

I don't know, but it might be worrying if a computer science student can't tell the difference between a processor and a professor.

Though some programs automatically consider you for the MA if you do not get in for the PhD, or have an option for you to indicate that you want to be considered for the MA. You might want to check whether your school does that before paying double fees.

My parents did not helicopter AT ALL. Ever since I started middle school I have lived my own life, advocated for myself, got myself where I wanted to be without help from my parents (no opposition whatsoever either, though). That is why I was so surprised that when I moved away for grad school in another country, my mother sort of insisted that she and my father flew me over. They were there for three days while I moved into my room and explored town.

A couple of times on that trip my mother took charge (like asking someone for directions even though she had no idea where we were going) that in any other situation she would let me have handled. I let her do it, because I understand why she felt like she should take charge at that moment. I am her youngest child, moving out, leaving the country, and she has missed out on babying/pampering/helicoptering me because I grew up so fast. It was as if she 'needed' to see me off properly, so during those three days I let myself get pampered more than in the ten years before.

    Love you, mom.

I guess it depends on the school, maybe some of them are actually that kind. Also I think that emailing POI might be more helpful, especially if you got in touch prior to applying

Honestly, I think most friendships aren't like the ones portrayed on TV and in movies: all the unconditional heart-to-hearts, sunny montages of carefree time spent together and the hours each week spent in their company, remaining friends for decades on end...it's an exaggeration on real life, at least. It might be that you're wanting something that doesn't really exist.

What I'd do is take up a group activity/hobby that you can do without the family in tow. Meetup is really good (it attracts folk of all ages) - hiking, running, foreign-language conversation groups don't take up too much time (perhaps 1 or 2 hours per week), but you get to hang out with people who have similar interests to you, which is always a great foundation for friendship.

My point was that some of us were accepted to both professional masters and research-based masters programs. So telling us that we don't know what we're doing when it comes to applying to research-based programs is inaccurate. Also saying that universities want to admit as many professional masters students as possible to make money off of us is also inaccurate. I know that one of the professional masters programs at my undergraduate university loses money each year, as tuition doesn't even begin to cover the costs of running the program. It is actually online undergraduate courses that help fund some of the graduate programs, including the professional programs.

Also, after completing my professional masters degree, I will be eligible to apply to PhD programs in Canada, just as if I had done a research-based masters, because my professional programs includes elective research courses and practica, which I plan on taking to keep my options open.

Now, things in the US may be different (I still can't believe you can go straight from undergrad to PhD programs without doing a Masters first) but you can't say all professional masters admit tons of students just to make money off of them. That is simply not the case.

In 2010, there were 6,806 new MPH enrollments in 46 accredited schools, an average of 148 per school.

The report includes graduates with an MPH by school: min 20 (SUNY Buffalo and Maryland), max 351 (Columbia), mean 112.98, median 95. High-reputation programs were often larger, for example Johns Hopkins had 293 MPH grads in 2010 and Michigan had 204. Applications and total enrollment for the MPH have mostly been trending upwards as well. If there are a bunch of tiny programs out there, it is likely because they are new or newly accredited.

Public health is a growing field, which is awesome, but it is not a competitive field (it could hardly be if it were going to grow). I say this as a public health person.

The MPH program that I've gained admission to only accepts 10 students per year, and is incredibly competitive. While not fully funded, I will receive financial assistance through scholarships and TAships. So I don't think you can generalize about professional programs. Why is our cohort so small? Well, it includes an accredited dietetic internship, and they can only provide the required types of internship and practicum placements for that many students.
I was also accepted to a fully funded MSc program. You just don't go from undergrad to PhD in my field in Canada. You need an masters degree to be able to apply to a PhD program.
