You'll be bored by the end of it!! Flying is a chore for me now. Headphones in, book out/papers to read, and normally have a nap. Oh and homemade snacks because airport food sucks.

I sure hope to feel that way! I have a 35-minute layover for one of my flights ... good thing I booked my own travel for that one and was able to choose a seat close to the exit.

Are you allowed to bring snacks? I thought they made you throw out your food. I can't remember ... it's been two years since I've flown haha!

  2. One-day visitation day tomorrow from 8:30 - 6 ...

Then a flight the next morning that departs at 8:30am for a recruitment visit, and I'll be at the visit until Saturday.

Ahhhh I'm nervous yet excited yet not excited about flying! I've only traveled by plane for two trips in my life. And I'm taking three trips by plane over the course of four weeks. I'm a bit intimidated!

While certainly not as prestigious as some of the other programs people have been accepted to, I just got an admit to Auburn's rural sociology program. Waiting to hear back about funding, but it's such a relief because I've been admitted somewhere, and because Auburn is my top choice (great fit with the department).

Good luck to everyone else waiting to hear back about their PhD programs!

woo hoo!!! Congratulations, Pastel!! *high fives and throws confetti for you*

I can only speak from what I learned from the current graduate students and faculty, so don't think that this is set in stone.

They took on a particularly large cohort last year (I think 12) and were looking to even out because of that. I also spoke to a number of graduate students who were initially waitlisted before entering the program (about half of them). A quarter didn't attend the visit last year, yet still ended up at Vanderbilt. The DGS made it clear they were meeting on Monday and sending their recommendations for admission to the Dean's office ASAP. So we should hear something this week.

I'm as nervous as everyone else. The school and program were amazing. If I manage to get one of those six spots I'll be accepting the offer on the spot.

Wow, aresh, this is super helpful. Thank you so much for this information! It gives me a sense of the possible reasons I haven't any news. It sounds promising at this point!

I agree that it's an amazing program. When my undergrad thesis advisor was there, she loved it. She still meets with her dissertation advisor for dinner when they happen to be at the same conference. And I've met other professors from the department at conferences. They all just seem so kind-hearted and invested in their students' academic success and personal growth.

I truly hope you get an acceptance because it sounds like you'd be a great fit!

I'm in the same spot that you are.  Haven't heard a peep from Vandy at this point.  Guessing it means that we've been placed on a de facto wait-list of some kind, but then again, if I've learned anything from the grad school application process thus far, it's that very little about the selection process makes sense, and that trying to predict any of the outcomes or logic behind them is pretty much an exercise in futility haha

Amen to that!!! We'll just have to wait and see!

As someone else waiting to hear from Vanderbilt, I definitely appreciate the update as well!  Six admission offers seems like a really small number though (unless they are expecting every single offer to be accepted).  I remember their website saying they usually try to have 5 to 10 students in each new yearly cohort, so unless they are expecting every person from the weekend to accept their offer, does anyone know if they're hoping for a smaller cohort than usual this year?  Or is it possible this means there are still offers to be made to those who haven't heard anything yet?

I know the smaller cohort option is probably more likely, but sometimes a little wishful/hopeful/denial-based thinking is all a man has left to cling to:P lol

Did you go to the visit? Or are you in the same spot as me: neither invited to the visit nor rejected?

If so, it's good to know others are in the same spot!

The interview weekend just happened. While there the acting DGS told the 11 of us that they would be offering admission to 6. They are supposed to be meeting today to make their decisions.

Not sure if that helps, but I figured I'd let you know what's going on there.

That DOES help. That way I know when I might hear back. Thank you! I hope you had fun on the visit, and I hope you hear some good news soon! =)

gingin, how are you SO awesome ALL the time on these boards?! I'm definitely taking you up on tea and delicious pastries at some point! I went to classes and then went for a mosey around town earlier, but now it's dark and frozen outside so I'm tucked up in bed with netflix. But gym in the morning, and my mum's coming up (she lives a 3 hour drive away) and taking me out for food and shopping time. I wish I could take time with my work but unfortunately so many deadlines. The delights of a one year intensive masters.

The thought of maybe moving to Florida (depending on funding) is fuelling me right now. Sunshine. Warmth. Cheap cost of living. :D

Aw shucks! Thank you! I just like being supportive to my friends!! One day we shall meet in real life and feast on pastries, tea, coffee, and -- in the spirit of the thread -- wine, of course!

Ah yes, the time difference! I'm glad you enjoyed the sun while it was there. I'm glad your mom is visiting, too!! That sounds great!

YES! Florida is so warm and sunny!!

Still waiting to hear from schools but right now I just don't care. One way to cure admissions stress is to have a 5 year long relationship end last night. I have buckets of tea, chocolate and reading for assignments, because let's face it, any work I do right now ain't going to be pretty. I went to buy a sports bra because in all my training and life stress, I've lost a tonne of weight, and on my way back I stepped in dog poo. Please please please tell me you guys are having a better day?

oh my goodness!!! *huge hugs* I'm so sorry this happened ... I wish I were there to make you some tea and delicious pastries! I would suggest doing something besides work right now. I'd be one of those people who advises against sitting around in bed eating bonbons to soothe your pain, but chances are, I would definitely be doing that.

If the weather is at all nice outside, consider going outside and simply sitting. Sunshine might just help even a smidge.

For anyone else who still hasn't heard from UPenn: I talked to the DGS and we are on the waitlist, just not very high on the waitlist. So take that as you will :)

I wonder if something similar is happening with Vanderbilt. I wasn't invited to the visit weekend, but I haven't been rejected either.

At this point, I'm worried they sent me an email with either an invitation or a rejection, but I missed it somehow (even though I watch my email -- even my spam folder -- like a hawk).

Hoping to hear something soon either way, to put this fear to rest!

Haha, if I got into Hogwarts, I'd be pretty okay with getting rejected to grad schools

Me, too, especially if they offered me a nice funding package (including reimbursement for mileage when traveling by broom to conferences and such).

Still nine to go. One official acceptance, one official rejection, and I currently have two very promising (one school with two fellowship nominations, one school invite to a "very select group of applicants") and one very not promising (lots of acceptances and wait lists posted, no rejections, and I haven't heard anything).

I'm hoping for an eventful week to say the least!

Wow that is a lot! I'm glad you have an acceptance under your belt, as well as promising programs to hear back from! Yes, I hope you have an eventful week as well! <3

Haha, I was wondering how people were getting their mail today.

    Also, I love this meme!

Probably by owl. Maybe they keep making typos of the university names. Like they mean to type "Hogwarts" but type "Northwestern" instead. I make that same mistake all the time.

I love it, too! I really just wanted an excuse to use it ..

  14. 2 minutes ago, Euler said:

Yeah, I'm expecting one rejection letter (though nobody has posted that they've gotten one yet, so we'll see), and there's a good chance at one acceptance letter. But all the rest of it is waiting for email notification to check the schools' application systems.

I usually skip the middleman and just obsessively check the application systems directly!

I haven't "outsmarted" the system yet though. Meaning, I still haven't found my rejection/acceptance letters on the application website without being notified by email first :-P

  15. 1 minute ago, Euler said:

It kind of blows my mind that mail is actually the method of decision for some places at all, when literally every other part of the application is digital :P

I guess it makes our lives more exciting, waiting for the mail to arrive each day. It's like checking email on steroids!

Yes, it surprises me as well! I haven't received a physical letter for any of my rejections, but I received two acceptance letters after being accepted electronically, so that was a nice little surprise in my mailbox.

  16. 3 hours ago, FoxAndChicken said:

That seems like good news, I think! Eep! Good luck!

I should also mention that, while the recruitment visit was this past weekend, I didn't get invited to it! I realize my last post made it sound like I went and was waiting to hear back. Nope, I did not go to the visit, which is part of why I feel like I'm in extra limbo, you know?

Yes, I always make sure to check spam! My spam folder is the cleanest it's ever been! @foxandchicken thank you! (posting on mobile is tough, hence weird formatting)

  18. So, some rejections went out for the only program I'm waiting to hear from ...

But I didn't receive one? The recruitment visit was this past weekend, so I'm guessing they're only going to accept those from the visit ...

    But I didn't get a rejection.

So now I'm like "what if they invited me to the visit and I deleted the email by mistake?" etc etc. even though I manage my email and watch it like a hawk.

Maybe my rejection is on its way, maybe I'm on a wait list, maybe they'll surprise me and accept me without me going on the visit.

EITHER WAY, my biggest fear is that somehow I missed some key piece of information along the way! Ah!

So I just binged watch Fuller House the entire day and night. Almost the end of Februgatory and final decisions are expected to be sent on March 15. I have a bad feeling but I would still like to send out my hope to the universe. Lol

How was Fuller House? I started it yesterday! got mostly through episode 1 so far! (I'm slow.)

hello all. Long time lurker here. So I got an interview invite to one of my top schools on Thursday night. The interview was scheduled for Friday afternoon, via skype, with the entire admissions committee of 5.  Typically, I'm a pretty good interviewer. BUT THIS WAS A DISASTER OF EPIC PROPORTIONS! I totally bombed. I wasn't prepared for the questions they asked (though I should have been). I rambled, I was incoherent, I didn't directly address anything that they asked. They all looked confused. I literally wanted to cry about half way through.  The worst part was that there was something wrong with the sound on their end, so I could barely hear them. I kept having to ask them to repeat what they said, and they seemed really annoyed! It seemed like there was a fan or something in their conference room that muffled the sound. I spent half the call trying to read their lips. i tested my skype right before the call and i could hear my friend on the test call perfectly!  But even when I was finally able to figure out what they were saying, I STILL wasn't prepared to answer their questions! Oh, and they basically told me that my research project is ill conceived. I feel like a complete idiot and I just want to crawl under a rock and stay there for 15-20 years. There is a zero percent chance I am going to be admitted after that mess. Maybe this is the universe's way of telling me that this was not the right school for me, and I should go with the other offer that I have?

Anyway, in keeping with this thread title ("wine, wait and whine") I am now chugging a bottle of wine at 11:30am (it's 5 o'clock somewhere right?!). :-/

Heidi, I'm so sorry to hear this!! Take some time to treat yourself for a while. Then, type up a well-written email thanking them for the interview and apologizing for the technical difficulties that happened during the Skype session. But for now ... just take some time away from the application process!!! Enjoy your wine, and try to get a tasty pastry to go with it!

I got an email today saying I'm funny funded for one of my programs, with a PDF of the details. Except the PDF won't download or open or something on my phone, and this hotel doesn't have free WiFi. So I still have no idea what they're offering. But the PDF filename is "Distinguished Dean's Fellowship," so that's probably a sign of good things inside.

Oh wow that's amazing! Congratulations!! I hope you are able to open the funding letter soon!
