I don't want to get into this argument. All the ethics talk is scary.

However, I do want to emphasize for the future applicants reading these pages who are thinking of transferring (and who may be stressing out): It is OK. It is common. Faculty members at your institution and at the schools you will apply encounter this kind of stuff all the time. I am just a lowly grad student who is about to become -yet again- a lowly grad student, so my perspective is obviously limited. Still, if you have concerns and want to talk about it, feel free to PM me now or in the future. I would be happy to offer my two cents.

I got my PhD from a small department where transferring was rare (though did happen) and work at one where transferring is pretty common.  You run into the occasional faculty member that gets offended, but most folks I've met understand these decisions.  It can be comparable to changing advisers or committee members in that respect.  Read the room first, but at the end of the day you need to do what's best for you.

Anyone declining Georgetown?  Better yet, any comparativists?  I would burst into tears the second I received a notification that i got off of the waitlist.  Also, if you do decline and I get a spot, I can commit to writing very favorable review articles of all of your work when I am a very important and established academic.  Deal?

I saw "Texas A&M" in my new unread email this afternoon, and thought, dread. I know this program has yet to send out rejections, so I knew it was the day of reckoning.

Well, I was wrong, it was an acceptance letter. I just now read it another time just to be sure. I literally can't believe this. I'm not even happy or excited yet, I am just in disbelief since this was my top dream program, and I never thought I had a chance. (Okay, it's starting to sink it, and thus, the happiness and excitement!)

Looking forward to meeting everyone else who is  A&M-bound next Fall!

Does karma work in an anachornistic fashion? The rejection itself would suggest yes, but the "Harvard / top 5 program / blah blah blah" would suggest no...

    edit: words is hard.

Is anyone else obsessed with reading CVs of successful academics?  It's actually all I do with my life anymore...

This waiting is killing me. I was really hoping I'd hear from at least one more school this week.

I'm tired of lurking and just want to say that I'm glad I found this forum. Knowing that you are all in the same boat makes this process much more bearable. Seeing this kind of support is a beautiful thing.
