<GRE appointment reminder>
Don't schedule your GRE a few weeks before your country decides whether to be independent folks!
Hope everybody's preparation is going well.

cupofnimbus got a reaction from serpentina02 in GRE retake advice. Thoughts?
Reviving this topic a little bit for my own purposes. I'll be retaking the GRE in the next month or two, and really need to beef up my quant scores (verbal was great). Are there any recommendations for study programs? Is it worth the couple hundred to invest in a tutor or study course, or are there web resources that would work as well on my schedule?

Last rejection from Maryland came this morning. No surprises, but that closes out my cycle. Can't say I'll totally disappear, since I'm already planning for next cycle, but I'll be taking a couple of weeks to rest off the emotions from this one. Huge, huge congratulations to everyone with good news this time around, and best of luck in the fall! And thank you to all of you, for being such a great support group during this process.

No it isn't. Graduate School is an apprenticeship. This is a business as well as an educational agreement and the students are entering with far less knowledge and power. Again, I reiterate that students should apply for Ph.D. programs because they will be valued more by the professors, the program, and the university. Why in the world would you put yourself at a disadvantage vis-a-vis your peers?
More importantly, I don't think you have any understanding of ethics and norms in post-graduate studies. If you haven't done it, you're talking out of ignorance.

claim LSU acceptance.
They said, no assistanship is available for me, but they nominated me to Graduate School
Tuition Award. It covers all the tuition fees, but I do not know whether it provides monthy stipend or not. How do you think?

Just got a phone call from the DGS at Pittsburgh (top choice!). Admitted off the waitlist! One of the best days of my life!

I get it. Every time I see posts like that, I try to think that people are probably stinging from the rejection and trying to rationalize their feelings and confusion about the process.
But I definitely get that it stings when someone puts down a program that someone else might be really excited about, and it's not a very nice thing to say.
(The process is starting to get to everyone, I think.)

I do think that way too, and I'm really not that concerned about results themselves 'cause my cycle is pretty much over and I'm happy with it. But I keep reading these messages and I just couldn't take it any more. Many are worried and anxious about their particular situation, and other ones just don't care at all, and it's a horrible thing. Maybe, I have not been diplomatic with my message, but I don't think a little empathy is too much to ask.

I wrote it, and I promise it was not spamming and jelly as I've already confirmed my spot at one particular program.
It has nothing to do with anything else but the fact that those messages are extemely disrespectful to any of the other users at GC that are waiting on their notifications, or even those who didn't get in at all.
I meant everything I wrote and I would write it again. People should care a little bit more about the other ones in the same situation and not just let their egos write.

I saw "Texas A&M" in my new unread email this afternoon, and thought, dread. I know this program has yet to send out rejections, so I knew it was the day of reckoning.
Well, I was wrong, it was an acceptance letter. I just now read it another time just to be sure. I literally can't believe this. I'm not even happy or excited yet, I am just in disbelief since this was my top dream program, and I never thought I had a chance. (Okay, it's starting to sink it, and thus, the happiness and excitement!)
Looking forward to meeting everyone else who is A&M-bound next Fall!

It's not very new or revolutionary, but if you're a comparative or IR person, I think Anderson's Imagined Communities should be required reading. It was for me as an undergraduate.

This is what's keeping me from applying to the War Studies PhD at Kings College London--funding isn't there, and I'm not sure my time isn't better spent on doing other things with my application (studying and retaking GRE, etc).
I think taking a little time at this point will be good for all of us. Get this cycle out of the system, even if preparing for the next one. I'm not going to start rewriting my SOP tomorrow, but I can start making connections in the next couple of months with POIs (because that's one thing I didn't do this time, out of concern for their schedule). But for now, take a few days, or a few weeks, clear out your head, and get in the right place so you know what it is going to be right for you

Nice. I'm from Estonia, so I grew up watching all the big European leagues, so I have a favorite in each.

It is all conjecture but that could be possible. Brandeis is also such a small department that perhaps the two or three people that were accepted don't have gradcafe accounts. Who knows. I'm just curious to see if those that have posted on the submission page their status are planning on accepting better offers. It would really help the rest of us to make that apparent as soon as possible. Also five people may not have a shot of getting off the waitlist, but certainly 2 or 3 may.

There can never be enough fans of Premier League in the field, especially if it means that study buddies can cheerfully bicker about football with you. (I'm a Liverpool fan.)

Congrats Cazorla! Couldn't be happier for you, even if you are an Arsenal fan!
