johnnycomelately got a reaction from Blooms in Applied on 29 April 2016 to MAPSS at UChicago
It will be a few weeks, minimum, before your application is read by a member of the adcom, the committee meets to discuss applications, the graduate division approves the list of prospective students the adcom decides to accept, and acceptance/rejection letters are drafted and posted to the application website. All this to say, give it a while before contacting the school-unless you had an issue submitting a required document, or another similar issue pertaining to the application itself.
    Good luck!

johnnycomelately reacted to kotov in Summer 2016: What will you be researching this summer?
I'm gonna be working on turning my dissertation into a book. Not necessarily doing new research, but going back over some of the old documents that I read back at the beginning of my research for this project (three years ago now -- good grief!) that I want to reconsider and possibly put different weight on and interpret differently now, with the perspective of the completed project. But, more or less, I'm trying to get enough of the book together to be able to send out the proposal to a press by the end of the summer.

May I give an advice to incoming students?
I'd bet all your schools have a lot of resources to make your graduate education richer, better, and tailored according to your interests. Many times, these resources are sort of "hidden" because it is really hard to spread the word about anything since everyone is advertising their own thing. Use this time to check on this: workshops, free tutorials, library services, health and wellness options, etc.
From my experience, many things are listed online, but I had to ask for final details to other grad students, especially regarding intramural sports. Remember that grad school is what you make of it, it is not just a program that you follow (granted, in some cases it is!  ). But you have the power to make it your own experience. This is the time to scout websites and check what's going on!
    All the best!!!

    Wow. Just, wow.
Also, no. No way, no how. Not only is there no stipend, they actually expect you to teach a course! It's sad that they are advertising this, and it's sad that some people will surely be desperate enough to actually do it.

I'll be at Yale working on Native language work, then back to my archive in Providence.

johnnycomelately got a reaction from neur0cat in "A good fit" - What does it actually mean?
Fit is used not only in relation to research interests, but is also a concern when it comes to the type of resources that would be available to you at that program/university. This can be anything from primary source material, say for the humanities/social sciences to specialized lab equipment, or even a formal relationship with other centers/programs/universities for resource sharing. The more you show that you are aware of these things, especially in your SOP, the better you demonstrate your "fit" for that particular program.

johnnycomelately reacted to fuzzylogician in Can I start an application now for admission 2017 period when application system doesn't open for 2017?
Don't begin applications before they are active, that can't lead to anything good. You can read up on requirements on departments' websites and create a spreadsheet to keep track of requirements and deadlines, to be updated later in the fall. There is a lot you can get started on now if you wish, for example writing a first draft of your SOP. Those things take time and the best thing you can do is write a preliminary version with enough time to put it away and come back to it several times. You could do research on each department and potential advisor, for a stronger, more focused SOP. You could refine your research interests, think about questions that interest you, and the language you'd need to use to describe it concisely in a statement. You could work on your writing sample, if any program requires it. You could study for the GRE. You could create a CV for yourself, start a website, create profiles on academia.edu or researchgate or whatever else people in your field use. You could think of who your LOR writers will be and start putting together the materials you'll give them (but it's too early to actually contact them!). Lots of things you can do without access to the application software itself.

johnnycomelately reacted to fuzzylogician in Unfunded PhD in Public Health, advise please!
Assuming this is your only acceptance, I think you should wait to hear back about possible funding. If it's a yes, you go. If it's a no, you explain that you are very excited about the program but can't attend without funding and ask to defer by one year in the hopes that you'll get funded next year. Meanwhile you reapply to other programs and hope for a better outcome. Don't attend an unfunded program and don't count on something working out after the first year -- what if it doesn't? That could have significant negative outcomes and is not worth the risk.

I'm a black, trans, queer, low SES, non-Christian woman. I literally hit every diversity marker out there!  Trust me, y'all don't wanna deal with what I go through to claim affirmative action.
I'd say FU to anyone who calls me a token diversity. I work my ass off and am damned good at what I do. Even in the off-chance I was chosen because I'm a minority, let me revel in that small slice of victory. You (whatever majority is downplaying me) have the whole privilege pie to eat.

BE NICE, especially with grades. Don't give any grades you feel you do not want yourself. It's sometimes easy to be consumed by the new powers, trust me.

johnnycomelately reacted to England in Credit hours/language vs. time to apply/prepare Fall 2016
Thanks for all the replies.  Neist, what you described in terms of the amount of time that it takes to apply (and do it right) is exactly why I am hesitant to stretch myself too thin in terms of time.  rising_star, I knew I had to have the bulk of my Fulbright/Marshall application work done by the start of school; but after your post I went and read the Fulbright application instructions more carefully.  I didn't realize there was a separate institution interview before the app was submitted. Thanks for pointing that out. I am meeting with our Fulbright Advisor before the end of the semester to get set up for dates, etc. for the fall.  TMP taking the language was just to have another language on my transcript.  My honors thesis is pretty extensive and I want to give it a lot of attention in hopes that I can be chosen to speak about it at a conference. I've decided I am going to forego the language for now and concentrate on making my applications/thesis the best they can be.  Thanks everyone for sharing your advice!

As it stands, you have a few options. Attend the program you have committed to, probably not your first choice, but time might change that. Contact the MA program you declined, tell them you made a mistake and see if they can still take/fund you. Take a year off and apply next year.
Most decisions you will make in life will leave you with some sense of "what if", but that's just part of the decision making process in general. Try not to be too hard on yourself and do what is best for you.

johnnycomelately reacted to TakeruK in What to do if a school is asking for funding info before the admission decision?
The people that send the immigration form and the people that handle your funding don't really talk to each other and they work on different timescales. I second @GradSchoolTruther's suggestion. Talk to the department and find out what your funding situation is, and then forward that to the people asking for immigration documents. I had a fun/confusing scenario too. In February of my application year, one school sent me the request for financial information well before the April 15 decision deadline and well before I even made any decision. The international office just said that they always send the forms requesting this info ahead of time and I can choose to either fill it in now so it will be ready once I make my decision, or wait until I make a decision and then send the info. So I think what you've done so far is right and now you just need to finalize funding info so you can provide the correct numbers to the international office.

How long ago did you try getting in touch with the POI? If I were in your shoes, I might try emailing/calling again, and/or contacting the program admin/grad advisor, but only after giving them at least a week to get back to me (people are busy, especially this time of the year), and only if I had a pressing reason (another program that needs a response/job application/offer/etc) to find out ASAP. .

johnnycomelately got a reaction from Biology_94 in Am I waitlisted ??/
From the grad coordinator's response you posted, it seems as if you were/are wait listed pending notifications from accepted students. As the CGS stipulated deadline has passed, you should be hearing back from them once they have a better picture of the as-of-yet confirmed incoming cohort. That said, I agree with the above comment, and, if I were in your position, I would only contact them again if I were sitting on an offer that required a response soon-ish (1 week or so).
    Good luck!

TBH (and my preference for economic/class orientations is showing here) I don't think following the money is ever the worst choice. Worst case scenario? You drop out with an MA in hand from an excellent school, no accrued debt.
Worst case scenario with your dream MA? You don't get a job or a PhD offer after you finish your MA, you have warm fuzzy experience, but also now owe the school 60k+ for having those experiences.

Going to the University of Chicago, but through their MAPSS program. They gave me a decent scholarship. Also, a POI, who I was not in contact with, sent me an email out of the blue saying that she was interested in my application and wanted to work with me. Pretty excited about that!
