  1. Looks like there is lots of info here already but I will just add that MULTITASKING on a mac is MUCH EASIER than PCs. Every PC I've used (and I've used several, my dad is a comp engineer so only uses PCs), gets super slow when you open more than one program, or more than one internet tab even. So for research, where you would potentially be switching between articles and note software, I would recommend a mac. I can keep several programs open on my mac and switch between them easily without having to see the spinning-color-wheel-of-death. Even with iTunes open and my comp hates iTunes (its old).
  2. Yes there are opportunities to teach Greek at the High School level, mostly at private or charter schools. As was mentioned above, these will usually be available to people who can teach Latin as well (because there will usually only be 1-2 Greek classes while there may be up to 5 Latin classes). Unfortunately, the way Greek crops up at schools is usually through students or a teacher showing interest in starting a Greek class, or it may even begin as one students independent study, so schools introducing Greek generally aren't actively looking for Greek teachers. But just look around, I substitute at two Friends Schools in Philadelphia and one has Greek classes, the other has one girl studying Greek, so yes, opportunities are out there! I would also recommend looking for private tutoring jobs.
  3. Contrary to the opinions of unlikelygrad, I have priced Bay Area housing. I have had several friends rent apts in the bay area, including San Fran proper, who have gotten nice apartments (not rundown ones) for under 1000/month. Looking for roommates can help too. Just be smart about where you look for housing. I would talk to other grads about cheaper neighborhoods/areas too. (Didn't mean to sound defensive, just trying to help; wanted you to know my help was informed.)
  4. My guess is this is an email sent to everyone who's got an application into the school, but from what I understand Penn's Post-bac is not terribly competitive (at least not as competitive as they would like you to believe- I assume because you have to pay for it!), so I wouldn't worry too much! Good luck! I hear its a great program.
  5. You should also realize that average cost of living is taking into account all levels of living, the average therefore representing someone who probably owns/rents a small house and may have a family (and perhaps this would be true for you, in which case ignore this), but I am sure you can find a cheaper apartment and find thrifty ways to save money if you try!
  6. I know very little about Fordham Classics except that I had a friend who was there for undergrad who was totally happy. Also, I know the department is really small and can't offer many classes, so you'll probably end up taking several classes elsewhere (my undergrad friend took many Latin classes at other NY schools). This might mean a lot of traveling from class to class, but it also gives you the chance to meet other Classics profs/students at other schools. But from what I understand, it is a good program. Good luck!
  7. I don't know where in Ohio you would be moving. But I lived in small town in Ohio for college, and the rent was ridiculously cheap. Of course, I didn't live any where fancy, but my rent was 200 a month. I would guess that the nicer houses there were only 2-3 times that (depending on how much nicer). So, my guess is you should be fine. You should talk to the other grad students there though, and see what their opinions of living on that stipend are.
  8. I would say they will probably appreciate your honesty more then leading them on regardless of it being a bit awkward. I'm sure they would rather spend the money on someone who will actually think of attending. Congrats on your acceptances!
  9. yup, me too. sigh. Does anyone know anything about Vanderbilt? It's the only school I have any hope left for, since I know Brown's interview weekend is this week or something. I'm glad I already have an acceptance but it would be really nice to have a choice I guess.
  10. I guess this means I should be expecting a rejection from them soon too... ugh. Congratulations though!
  11. Yes, from what I hear it is unlikely you'll be rejected by the grad school if the department accepted you. Just keep your fingers crossed, but I would say your chances are better-than-good!
  12. It depends on the schools, but some online applications have a space for the decision which may or may not appear as an option before the school actually posts their decision. Usually, if a school uses website notification, they will send an email letting you know decisions are available. Although, I have heard of cases where the decision is posted with no notification from the school, but I don't think it's usual.
  13. I don't have any basis for this, but my guess is that doesn't really fly with grad programs. But I suppose it depends on the type of program/reasons why, etc.
  14. Congrats on the acceptances! The best place to find this out is probably the department's website. Some say things like "Funding not available for MAs" some say things like "Funding guaranteed x number of years". But they will often let you know around when you should be hearing about funding. From what I understand, the school is supposed to have your funding situation laid out by April 15 decision day. You should also call the schools if you can't find the info on the website. Good luck!
  15. From what I understand, advisors tend to pick YOU. So I doubt you can switch now (also, that may not be the best start to your relationship with the department). Probably the advisor you wanted didn't have room for another student, or chose to work with a different applicant. If you went and didn't get along with/had conflicting research interests with your advisor, then you would probably be able to discuss switching advisors with your department.
  16. Yes, I have heard from AHMA. I was not one of the 3 either, but I never really expected to be. I'm hoping for better news from my other schools though. Good luck to you too!
  17. I heard from someone who said their friend had heard they were waitlisted from Penn Classics, but that's all I know. Don't know if admits have heard yet. I applied to Penn, but not to Classics, to AAMW. I haven't heard anything yet.
  18. That just happened to me too. I was checking my status the other day and I vaguely remember them having a notice that the system was going to be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. So I wouldn't worry about it.
  19. Anyone heard anything yet? I just got accepted to SUNY Buffalo! It isn't my first choice, but it makes me a bit more confident, and at least I know I have somewhere to go! I will probably be going to the visiting weekend (don't know when yet), anyone else? Also, it looks like from past years UPenn and Berkeley tend to notify by Feb 18th-ish? They are two of my top choices, I am getting VERY nervous!
  20. If you want to keep your options open, just visit. Its not like you can't decline an offer of admission if its made. You never know, you may love the program/professors. It will give you more information for when you do finally make a decision of where to go. Also, since you live in the same city, I assume it isn't even inconvenient for you (or costly for them for that matter)? Plus, they say academia is all about connections (unfortunately). So you might as well go meet the professors in your field, and if they are impressed by you (even if you don't go there), you will have them as contacts for jobs etc. down the line. Can't hurt can it?
  21. Thanks! That is very good to know.
  22. My Vanderbilt application was due last Friday, but the online status says they still haven't received the 2 transcripts I had to send. I requested these ages ago, so assume they should have them and perhaps have not updated the online status? Does anyone else have this problem? I know most schools say they will contact you if your application is incomplete (so they don't get a million phone calls I presume). Should I just hang tight, and keep my fingers crossed that they have my transcript?
