I've no attachments or family to support or significant others to visit. What has been your approach to choosing? Have you tried to turn a blind eye to the finances?

Funding is important to me, for two reasons.

First, I'm married and we plan on having kids in the next few years. You might end up in a relationship wherever you land, and security/stability may become more important then. So, that might be a relevant factor now, despite your not being in a position to know your future relationship details (maybe you'll find a nice sugar momma/papa and this will all be moot).

Second, I have student loans to pay off, and paying them off sooner than later is way better given accruing interest. You might not have this to worry about (if by 'no attachments' you include not having loans). If it is a worry for you, it seems like it should only have minimal weight (unless you want to get married and become a baby factory, then you'll never surface from your debt).

The mentorship aspect seems most important, but also the hardest to judge. Why do you think program C wouldn't be great for mentorship?

Although I haven't been accepted off the waitlist in my #1 program, I'll be declining my fellowship offer from Syracuse later tonight.  This is a very difficult decision.  I hope this helps someone.

This certainly helps me, thank you! What's your area of interest?

Do you think it's of bad taste to decline a WL mentioning that you accepted an offer from a another program and mentioning that a factor in deciding was that they put their faith in you (by accepting you in the first place)?

Seems like an unfair thing to say, given the other factors at play in admissions. Either way, what purpose would it serve?

It's all over for me, folks. I've declined offers from Syracuse and Rochester. This is the weirdest mix of emotions I have ever felt.

I'm curious what you'll be doing--another school or another year? (On mobile, which doesn't show sigs, so maybe the answer is there for wherever else you're accepted at.)

Thank you! Most likely not. I'll update here for sure.

Well, that's good news for me! Are you thinking Rochester, or another school? My advisor went to Rochester and loved it.

    I'm also interested to know.

Any idea how high up you are? I haven't asked if they've got a ranking, but it seems like they do ('very high' is what I've heard, but I've no idea if that means in the top three, four, five, etc.).

Sorry all, the past few days have been busier than expected.

    Tomorrow's list:

    1. Stanford
    2. UCLA
    3. Notre Dame

It's early enough PST that I might be able to get in touch with Stanford & UCLA tonight. I'll let you all know.

EDIT: Couldn't get in touch with Stanford via phone. Will try email now. Talked to someone at UCLA and was told to email the grad advisor, which I did. Will get back to you as soon as I hear something.

Uninformative update from McGill: Offers of admission start going out in mid to late March. Graduate students are selected for admission by the graduate committee based off of the strength of their application file.

(The second sentence was presumably in response to my question as to whether they admit internationals.)

If there are other schools you want me to contact tomorrow, let me know. (And hopefully, MIT contacts us tomorrow!)

Thanks for doing this! Anxious to hear about Notre Dame.

I have it on good word (I'm buds with one of the dudes on the admissions committee at ND) that they're running a little behind this year because of some computer/tech problems. Classic philosophers not being able to tech. In any case, that's probably why they haven't called anyone yet for the general PhD program. Best of luck to you all!!!!

It's stuff like this that makes me love GradCafe. Thanks!

I posted the History and Philosophy of Science acceptance at Notre Dame this afternoon. I was offered admission into the philosophy track along with two fellowships. I have such ambivalence with respect to sharing this information, for on the one hand, I am genuinely honored and excited to be granted this opportunity, but on the other, I recognize that my being granted an opportunity necessarily precludes others from said opportunity (and I know that may seem common-sensical or, at worst, banal, but I just have a lot of feelings.)

Congratulations! Hopefully they'll send out the traditional program's acceptances/waitlists/rejections soon.

I was just checking in hopes it was yours. :(

I'm really hoping that it has something to do with the HPS program; who knows, though, perhaps acceptances went out. Last year (I think) there were only two or so reported early on.

Haven't seen Jonny yet, but I'll ask him if he heard back.

    First official response:

    Waitlisted at Syracuse.

Congratulations! I was waitlisted there, too. I'm not sure you remember talking in 2014 (MA admissions season), but we have a couple mutual friends (one at WMU and one at Missouri).

  12. Gosh darn it.

I seem to be getting more telemarketers since turning in applications. I see an unknown number, get excited, google the zipcode, and then get super bummed. The same goes for emails; each little 'ding' of my inbox takes me through the whole range of excitement, disappointment, and then resentment at whoever sent me a non-application-related email.
