  1. They're as complete as US News gets. They list top 10 for free but I had to pay $10 to get the rest (see above). Some subfields only go up to 13, others as high as 20. I guess that's just how USN decided to do it.
  2. Yeah, I'm on the west coast. I guess I was just thinking UCSD would more likely send stuff out in the earlier part of the day.
  3. So I'm guessing that barring some people who come home and open mail (which is usually bad news anyhow), we've probably crossed another day off the calendar. So to summarize- an exciting Michigan acceptance, and just a lot, a lot, a lot of rejections from Duke. Let's hope tomorrow is a little more positive! On my end, haven't heard anything one way or the other.
  4. Does someone want to do me a HUGE favor and call Jennifer Evangelista at UCSD and ask if we can be sure we'll hear this week? I would do it but I called last week and have a pretty distinctive boomingly deep voice so am afraid it'll be recognized from last week. Doubt it but I'm paranoid and don't want to take any risks with that place. It's 858-534-7381.
  5. Just to be clear, I wasn't referring to myself. I have yet to hear from UNC either way. I just noticed that only one person posted an accpetance on 2/5. That's who to whom I was referring.
  6. Well, good news is that in eight hours or so, we'll mark the beginning of a week that will promise not to be dull...
  7. Make that two votes for UT-Austin. UNC might finish up acceptances if it hasn't already. As stated earlier, UCSD historically has notified this coming week as well.
  8. Did you pick a safety that was at least a good fit and somewhere you'd be happy to go to (if not the most prestigious)? I did that with UGA (and in the case that shit really hit the fan, Oklahoma and Albany). Always a good strategy to have.
  9. By the way, for us UCSD applicants, here's the good news (and I'm sure you've all noticed what I'm about to say, but I'll reiterate it just in case). Unlike most schools, UCSD last year sent out all of their acceptances in one day (Wednesday, February 11) and then sent out all the rejections the next (Thursday, February 12). Thus, there's a good chance that sometime this week, those of us who don't have e-mails from Jennifer Evangelista (UCSD grad coord) on the day that people are claiming acceptances, will at least have the peace of mind that we'll need to explore options outside of La Jolla. Definitely awaiting this one anxiously.
  10. What people should realize is that schools will often tell you that they aren't sending responses for a couple of weeks, even after a few people have already been admitted. UNC admitted some folks at the end of January and then at least one more this past Friday, February 5 (and I have to imagine that person was not the only one). I'm wondering if some schools admit some very well-qualified applicants earlier on and then have the adcom re-convene to make the tougher choices. That wouldn't be out of the question.
  11. I was killed by curiousity so I put down the 10 bucks on my credit card to find out what sat below the top ten, haha.
  12. Haha, fair point. More because I think it shows that some programs get under-rated in the overall but are strong in a particular field. TAMU is tied with UCD at 24th on overall, so I imagine if they did a more comprehensive list it would have been at 21 or somewhere near. It's definitely very strong for AP from what I understand.
  13. Hey...just while we wait, I thought it would make sense to post the subfield rankings that US News did for the four traditional fields plus methodology.: Methods 1Harvard University Cambridge, MA2Stanford University Stanford, CA3University of Michigan--Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, MIUniversity of Rochester Rochester, NY5Princeton University Princeton, NJ6New York University New York, NY7Washington University in St. Louis St. Louis, MO8University of California--San Diego La Jolla, CA9University of California--Berkeley Berkeley, CA10Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA11Ohio State University Columbus, OHYale University New Haven, CT13Columbia University New York, NYUniversity of California--Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA American 1University of Michigan--Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, MI2Stanford University Stanford, CA3Harvard University Cambridge, MA4Princeton University Princeton, NJ5Yale University New Haven, CT6University of California--San Diego La Jolla, CA7University of California--Berkeley Berkeley, CA8Ohio State University Columbus, OH9Duke University Durham, NC10University of Wisconsin--Madison Madison, WI11University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill Chapel Hill , NC12Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MAUniversity of California--Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA14Columbia University New York, NY15University of Rochester Rochester, NYWashington University in St. Louis St. Louis, MO17University of Chicago Chicago, ILUniversity of Minnesota--Twin Cities Minneapolis, MN19University of California--Davis Davis, CA20SUNY--Stony Brook Stony Brook, NY Comparative 1Harvard University Cambridge, MA2Princeton University Princeton, NJ3University of California--Berkeley Berkeley, CA4Stanford University Stanford, CA5Yale University New Haven, CT6University of California--San Diego La Jolla, CA7University of Michigan--Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, MI8Columbia University New York, NY9University of California--Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA10Duke University Durham, NC11Cornell University Ithaca, NY12New York University New York, NYUniversity of North Carolina--Chapel Hill Chapel Hill , NC14Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MAUniversity of Chicago Chicago, IL16Northwestern University Evanston, IL17University of Wisconsin--Madison Madison, WI18University of Washington Seattle, WA International 1Princeton University Princeton, NJStanford University Stanford, CA3Harvard University Cambridge, MA4Columbia University New York, NY5University of Michigan--Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, MI6University of California--San Diego La Jolla, CA7University of Chicago Chicago, IL8University of California--Berkeley Berkeley, CA9Yale University New Haven, CT10Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MANew York University New York, NY12Duke University Durham, NC13Cornell University Ithaca, NYUniversity of California--Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA15Ohio State University Columbus, OH16University of Minnesota--Twin Cities Minneapolis, MN17Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MDUniversity of Rochester Rochester, NYUniversity of Wisconsin--Madison Madison, WI20Georgetown University Washington, DC Theory 1Harvard University Cambridge, MAUniversity of Chicago Chicago, IL3Princeton University Princeton, NJ4Yale University New Haven, CT5University of California--Berkeley Berkeley, CA6Duke University Durham, NC7Northwestern University Evanston, IL8Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MD9Columbia University New York, NY10University of California--Los Angeles Los Angeles, CAUniversity of Notre Dame Notre Dame, IN12University of Michigan--Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, MI13University of Minnesota--Twin Cities Minneapolis, MN14Stanford University Stanford, CAUniversity of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PAUniversity of Virginia Charlottesville, VA17Cornell University Ithaca, NY
  14. OK, I'm not going to name any names here, but I must say that some of the comments I'm reading on this board are starting to make me think that there is credence to the stereotype that academia can be a very stuffy and elitist profession. My main focus as a soon-to-be graduate student is gaining the opportunity to get solid training that will allow me to be a good professor who students enjoy learning from. Of course I hope to have the opportunity in my career as a professor to conduct research and publish papers- who wouldn't? But at the same time, if I end up working at a terminal MA or (gasp!) BA program, I'd be far from disappointed. What I care most about isn't money (because frankly I already have plenty of that being one of those trust-fund kids) or prestige, but instead being able to make a difference in people's lives. Where I get my training of course matters, but I don't share the view that some on this board seem to harbor that if a person gets their PhD at a non-top-ten program such as UC-Davis or Florida State (see signature below) that they're going to have a miserable time finding a job or that if they don't then that's the exception, not the rule. I have never wished those going to top-of-the-heap programs anything but congratulations. But I must say that it's really a turn-off when people start projecting this "better than" attitude to the point where it becomes dismissive of anybody who isn't joining them in the Ivy League.
  15. Good to know, although political theory isn't my subfield. I'm in American politics. If you're saying that these outlooks extend into the way you are taught to approach research in general, then I guess I kind of understand what you're saying. But I don't know if you necesarilly meant that or whether you assumed I was interested in the theory subfield...
  16. Actually, Mearshimer, since you asked, I'm actually gay , but I guess that's not very relevant to the boards here. In what way do you think those two are incompatible?
  17. So it looks it's closing time for this week. Glad to see that a lot of people had some good results. Monday was good for me but pretty boring the rest of the week. I have a feeling next week should be a turning point for a lot of us, however. I know that UCSD will notify people, from the looks of what they've done in the past probably on a Wednesday for Thursday. If I get rejected by them and make the assumption that my "projected rejections" are indeed accurate, then that will leave Minnesota (which apparently is going to take until early March!) to hear from. I would certainly go there if admitted. If I got in, which I admit is definitely an uphill battle, then the process would be over as I would most definitely choose to attend. Thus, next week's decision will either put a big dent in the process, or will end it altogether. In the mean time, I'm thinking I should just enjoy my weekend, as all of this is out of my hands.
  18. Congrats to today's Rochester and UNC admits! I'm wondering if the absence of e-mails from either of those schools on my end signals a rejection. Likely but I'm OK with that given I'm in at some places I would be totally happy at. Should be an interesting week coming up!
  19. Yes! Congrats, congrats, congrats to the Northwestern acceptees. It's great to see people getting into great programs. I wonder whether tomorrow will be a big news day or not. The only thing I noticed about last year is that few if any e-mails and phone calls were received by applicants on a Friday. We might have another one of those weekends where we accumulate some more grey hairs.
  20. OK- so like most of you on this forum, I simply can't stand the waiting and am looking forward for this process to be over. So I did a little phone calling today to try and get the facts straight on things. The following schools should be sending notifications, according to my conversations, at the listed times: UCSD- Most likely next week, week after at the latest Rochester- Next week MIT- End of this month, or early next month UT-Austin- Despite some reports about decisions this week, the woman I spoke with (although it wasn't Megan Mulligan) said "one to two weeks" Emory- Next week if you haven't heard this week (ie we'll make sure to send the formal rejection) Notre Dame- Two weeks probably UNC-CH- "The next couple weeks" Iowa- Said because of budget cuts they weren't sure about whether they'd be able to fund students this year (I hope this doesn't set off a huge firestorm on the board), but probably three weeks when we do hear Anyhow, that's what I gathered if it's useful to anybody
  21. Suddenly Paranoid- Pls ignore question. I didn't realize topic had moved off of FSU and onto Michigan. So many different posts about so many different things going on I get confused!
  22. Oh, and question regarding Emory. I know one person on this board, in response to my inquiry, had said that they were told that they among "about ten people" invited to visit and that they would make decisions after that. However, someone else posted an acceptance via phone that happened Wednesday (soon to be yesterday here on west coast!). If that person is willing to show themselves on this board, I would just be curious to know a) what your subfield are is and were you invited for that visit too, or no? Asking because I'm trying to figure out if this is a weekend (or weekday, whatever) for admitted AND considered students or just the latter. My guess, like I said, is that I did not make the cut for this relatively small program, but I was just trying to get a lay of the land.
  23. Congrats all around to everyone accepted at Michigan, Emory, and WUSTL in the last few days (oh and forgot, also to fellow FSU admit!). Suddenly Paranoid- Maybe I missed something and I hate to ask people to repeat themselves, but what was the info you have on FSU re their department? I'm an Americanist myself and am strongly considering their program, so greatly appreciate it if you reiterated whatever it was for my apparently wandering mind (lol).
  24. Thanks, for the 411 bsquar. If I don't hear anything tomorrow or Thursday at the latest, I'll just assume that I'm not among those ten, haha.
  25. Would any of the Emory acceptances/interviewees please explain what they heard?
