I'm always confused when people apply to MFA programs that their not entirely familiar with.  You can google 'University of Pennsylvania MFA  CV'. Most of the artist tend to stay in in the Philly area and a few working abroad...

Maybe because they need more information about the school that aren't disclosed on the internet? I don't think you can simply looking through the students' works to fully understand the program as a whole. What about how the faculty guide you through the grad program? Or the school's philosophy? Or the interaction between students? Applicants and current students who have been lurking/members in this forum provide lots of helpful information that cannot be found by simply googling.

Your response of "I'm always confused when people apply to MFA programs..." implied you're being dismissive about other people's genuine inquiries. Furthermore, your "Lord, please don't go by the ranking list, just make your own list and go by that!" response implied you're discounting the fact that (whether you agreed or disagreed with the list/methodologies) how ranking actually somewhat (emphasize the 'somewhat') determines the school's credibility of producing artists/designers. It's completely fine if people are questioning about the programs they're going to attend.

I emailed them twice, and still got no response! It seems as if my emails are being ignored or something???  This is typical UCLA shenanigans, this situation is a exact replica of previous years freak out forums.  I did some research and they even forgotten to notify a few applicants of their admission decision.  Debating on withdrawing my application today...

Had my UPenn interview yesterday, and they will be contacting everybody who applied with a decision within the next 2 weeks! They're interviewing 60 and will be accepting about 18!

    Hey Ya'll:
    Newly design website: www.alexanderkevinwrencher.com
I do stuff canvas sculptural printmaking painting pieces, Ik it sounds kinda weird. I only applied to UCLA, SAIC and UPENN, just three schools sadly. Something weird happened to my Yale application, so I'm not sure if it even went through (Oh well, *shrugs). My first choice is UPenn, their international thesis sounds dreamy, young and fresh! Currently still undergoing my undergrad so no rush really, sending good vibes to everyones apps!!!!
@BlCEO- Your works was my favorite last year, surprise that you didn't land somewhere! I'm sure this year is your year, good luck man!!!!

I also stand by decision, even if it "disturbes" you. It shouldn't because you don't know me, it doesn't concern you, and you have no idea how I intend to pay for college or what funds I have.

In response to heyward2323, It's not just whether someone is mature enough, or if someone should go to school straight from undergrad.  You're focusing on just one of several points I'm making about why going to an MFA shouldn't be the default, normal thing for an artist to do.

You're also going to a school (Tyler) that disturbs me. I was curious what the tuition is there so I went to the website, and it's difficult to find. They brag prominently about their ranking as a top 10 mfa program, but I had to look in several places and do some math to find out it costs @35K/yr to go there. Even with 50% aid and a stipend, you'll likely graduate with a lot of debt.

In my opinion the person best situated to make great art and succeed is someone with no debt who can live in their studio and get by working part time. By going to openings and hanging out all the time with other artists they can get a lot of the feedback and community you find in art schools.

Anyone can live like this. In Grad School you get to do this for 2 years.

BUT, how are you going to go back to that lifestyle when you have to pay $400/month in student loans? Or when you have an inflated standards and don't want to go back to slumming it? In the end this should all be about what's best for the Art and the Artist. We have to be careful because so many programs will act as yes men and be happy to take our money while we pursue what turns out to be a vanity project.

From what I've seen a lot of grads are not in a good place, and the work that results isn't either.  It's not a good thing for Art if it's made by a bunch of stressed out overeducated artists desperate to sell work that is inaccessible yet cynically aimed at the market.

To make good work you want a lifetime of being free.  Enslaving yourself to debt payments is a sure way to ruin that.

Friend, it's not the 1970s anymore.  Many forms that were once too avant-garde for the "traditional institution pedagogy" have now well been institutionalized.  Haha.  Since I made some posts I have actually found a few professors that would have been perfectly valid as answers to my original question.
As for me studying "physics...psychology...Buddhism" - It seems awfully contrived and boring to try to follow the paths of those artists in such a literal way.  Like, I'm not going to study Buddhism because Robert Irwin is a Buddhist.  Even if I tried to approach my studies in such a way, I would be awfully confused considering the diverse spiritual and scientific backgrounds of artists I admire.

friend, what you seek is very unlikely to be able to be taught within the confines of a traditional institution pedagogy, if at all. Irwin in particular  was v. famously (or notoriously, depending) cagey w/r/t/ teaching in programs for any expanse of time. I would recommend taking up studies in Zen buddhism, alone or with a mentor. Perhaps a degree in physics, philosophy or ecology might be advised, for those less austere or spooked by the austerity of the void.

#2)  Experience the Real World First

Personally, I disagree with the idea of telling people that they should take a year break before applying for grad school. I think this discussion is largely dependent on the individual and not the generalization that every undergrad is immature or undeveloped coming out of school. (fresh undergrads do get admitted every year) Honestly, best thing to do is talk to your instructor who knows your work best and attend Graduate Portfolio Day. From there you can make a informed decision. Regardless, of your applicaton success, the experience of applying to grad school alone, has to be of some value.

To be honest I think you would benefit more from a BFA in Fine arts, instead of a MFA. Your work  is missing a lot of basic understanding of composition, color and the human form--along with other things.

They teach theses fundamental things at the BFA level, not at the professional MFA level. Since you have a lot of schooling done already, you most likely want have to worry about your liberal studies, so you can focus on studio art classes. Try attending National Portfolio Day to receive further feedback. You can even try emailing your portfolio to admission officers, I did it once and got a portfolio review over the phone.

Lastly, why a MFA in art...?

Lady rainicorn, you're most welcome! Please to keep me posted - I will be interested to hear where you end up going. And best of luck with your interview for Columbia, that's exciting!

Hdsl, here are my thoughts on New Brunswick:

New Brunswick is a weird little area. There's a lot of urban parts, a lot of poorer parts, and then the parts that are occupied by Rutgers. The main building that holds the Visual Arts dept. is at the junction of all those things. So right around the school, the area is totally fine. However, I am a little weary walking by myself later on at night for any great distance, especially off of George St., which is the main drag. Now, nothing's ever happened to me (knock on wood), but having lived in cities all of my life, it's just my own personal opinion.

Having said that, there are places to live that are within walking distance, but the farther you get away from the building, a little more iffy the neighborhoods become. The next town over is Highland Park, which is a lot nicer and where a lot of grad students live. You can walk/bike to and from Highland Park, but if you had a car, that would be ideal. However, if you aren't teaching, you can't park in the deck that is meant for the Civic Square Building, which is where the Vis. Arts Dept is. So, you would either have to park on the street (metered), or at a different campus. There are streets not to far away that have no meters, but if you have a BMW, I would not suggest parking there. So, that's a few things to consider.

I'm not sure what utilities are included in rents, but I would assume that many do include water. Heat, I'm not sure of, depending on what the source is. A lot of apartments around here are in houses, so I'm not sure how it's divvied up. My guess is that it's on a case by case basis. If you are renting a room, I think you could expect to pay anywhere from $500 - $900 a month, approximately. If you wanted your own studio, I would say it would be about $1000+, depending on location, size, etc.

Here's a link to the Rutgers Off Campus Housing site: http://ruoffcampus.rutgers.edu/ You can also try things like Craigslist, etc. But at least an official RU site might have a little bit more legit listings.

As per studios: as of right now, studios are located in three different buildings. Most are at the Civic Square Building, which is where mine is. There's another new building that just opened for studios called "Church Street," where 5 studios are - and there are more studios on the Livingston Campus. The studios are grouped by concentration. Painters have the largest studios, almost all of their's are at CSB, although some are on Church St. Almost all of the sculpture students have studios on the Livingston Campus. (And almost all those students have cars to get there.) But those studios are pretty large as well. Photo and video students have the smallest studios, and I do believe that I have the smallest of those. (Lucky me.) So, I would say that my studio is roughly . . . 15 x 20 feet? So if that's the smallest, they only go up from there. Some of the painting studios are GINORMOUS. Like, I've had apartments smaller than some of those studios. So all in all, we have a decent amount of space - though some, more than others.

And yes, all studios are 24/7 access.

Let me know when you're visiting! I'd be down for talking in person, showing you around, etc!

And good luck to you as well!
